Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ghada Samman’s most recent novel, Farewell, Damascus is set in early 1960’s Damascus – a city that now languishes in the grip of corruption and political oppression following the Baathist takeover in Syria. The book opens as Zain Khayyal, a university student and aspiring young writer, plots an early-morning escape from her house as her husband slumbers. Her mission: to get an illicit abortion, plans for which she’s divulged to no one, and to announce that she wants out of her stifling marriage. A rebel and a trail-blazer par excellence, Zain draws down the wrath of polite society and the authorities, political and religious alike, as she challenges attitudes and practices that demean rather than dignify, and a ruling regime that sucks the life out of both oppressed and oppressor. As the plot unfolds, Zain finds her way as a student to a neighbouring country which, though it grants her the freedom, respect and appreciation she had lacked in her homeland, becomes a place of anguished exile. Armed with her accustomed humour, pathos and knack for suspense, Samman fearlessly tackles issues that roil societies across the globe to this day: the stigma that attaches to the divorced woman but not the divorced man; whether to choose a life partner for love, or for social status, prestige and material security; whether abortion is a crime or a means of forestalling needless undeserved suffering; lesbian intimacy as a declaration of freedom from male abuse and tyranny; rape as an instrument of humiliation and subjugation and unconditional acceptance as healing balm. Farewell, Damascus is both a paean to a beloved homeland and an ode to human dignity.

Book Farewell My Beloved Goodbye Dear Leader

Download or read book Farewell My Beloved Goodbye Dear Leader written by Brigitte M. Wareham and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2024-04-26 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only certainty in life is death. Even the most powerful leaders throughout history were unable to cheat the Grim Reaper. World leaders, whether revered or reviled, are rarely allowed to exit gracefully from life but instead receive a state funeral, a major international event incorporating splendid symbols and messages, religious faith, and tradition. The body of Tsar Alexander III was carried across half of Russia before finally being buried in St. Petersburg. People paid obscene amounts of money for a room that gave a glimpse of Queen Victoria’s fascinating State funeral. The cortège for China’s Empress-Dowager Cixi was not to be photographed – nevertheless photos showed up a century later. For political reasons Generalissimo Franco’s body was exhumed decades after his death. The world became acquainted with a rather unusual ancient Roman Catholic ritual, when Pope John Paul I died. The body of India’s Indira Gandhi was confined to sacred flames. The last journey of Marshal Tito turned into an event of “Funeral Diplomacy”, whilst Khomeini’s funeral ended in frenzy and tumult. In 2021 the massive restrictions imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic meant a rigid downsizing of Prince Philip’s funeral, hardly any guests were allowed to attend. This revealing and entertaining book provides an insight into unique obsequies from across the world, seen as both a celebration of life and the honouring of death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE WAY OF LIGHT: The Way of Light focuses on the true Light (John 1:9) of the world (John 9:5) who came to enlighten every man to take him/her out of darkness (John 8:12). Any who do come to believe in the Light (Jesus) become sons and daughters of the Light, in fact children of the Light (1 Thessalonians 5:5). They will become Light bearers and shine as light in the world (Philippians 2:15). On numerous occasions within the context of these essays, the reader will encounter absolute truths regarding His being the Light. Readers will encounter various Scriptures which will testify to the claims Jesus made regarding His being the Saviour of the world. Most essays contain a minimum of 400 words, although some will be longer in length. Each essay will point the way to the Light (Jesus) in countless examples throughout the course of the book. For those who already follow the way of the Light (Jesus), they will discover examples as to how to share the Light (Jesus) with friends, family, relatives and associates. The Scripture states that none can come to Jesus unless the Father draws him/her (John 6:44) and that to be drawn into believing (faith) comes by the word of God (Romans 10:17). Many events point to a soon return of Jesus Christ who is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6). THE WAY OF LIGHT in each of its individual compositions will point the reader to the true Way of Light.

The accounts are all written on the sibylline leaves; they are in all languages, ancient and modern; and those concerning this story are in English.
