Book Between Worlds

Download or read book Between Worlds written by Frances E. Karttunen and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning the globe and the centuries, Frances Karttunen tells the stories of sixteen men and women who served as interpreters and guides to conquerors, missionaries, explorers, soldiers, and anthropologists. These interpreters acted as uncomfortable bridges between two worlds; their own marginality, the fact that they belonged to neither world, suggests the complexity and tension between cultures meeting for the first time. Some of the guides were literally dragged into their roles; others volunteered. The most famous ones were especially skilled at living in two worlds and surviving to recount their experiences. Among outsiders, the interpreters found protection. sustenance, recognition, intellectual companionship, and employment, yet most of the interpreters ultimately suffered tragic fates. Between Worlds addresses the broadest issues of cross-cultural encounters, imperialism, and capitalism and gives them a human face.

Book Governing States and Localities

Download or read book Governing States and Localities written by Kevin B. Smith and published by CQ Press. This book was released on 2019-01-03 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The trusted and proven Governing States and Localities guides you through the contentious environment of state and local politics and focuses on the role that economic and budget pressures play on issues facing state and local governments. With their engaging journalistic writing and crisp storytelling, Kevin B. Smith and Alan Greenblatt employ a comparative approach to explain how and why states and localities are both similar and different. The Seventh Edition is thoroughly updated to account for such major developments as state vs. federal conflicts over immigration reform, school shootings, and gun control; the impact of the Donald Trump presidency on intergovernmental relations and issues of central interest to states and localities; and the lingering effects of the Great Recession.

Book Information Theory and Artificial Intelligence to Manage Uncertainty in Hydrodynamic and Hydrological Models

Download or read book Information Theory and Artificial Intelligence to Manage Uncertainty in Hydrodynamic and Hydrological Models written by Abebe Andualem Jemberie and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2004-05-15 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complementary nature of physically-based and data-driven models in their demand for physical insight and historical data, leads to the notion that the predictions of a physically-based model can be improved and the associated uncertainty can be systematically reduced through the conjunctive use of a data-driven model of the residuals. The objective of this thesis is to minimise the inevitable mismatch between physically-based models and the actual processes as described by the mismatch between predictions and observations. Principles based on information theory are used to detect the presence and nature of residual information in model errors that might help to develop a data-driven model of the residuals by treating the gap between the process and its (physically-based) model as a separate process. The complementary modelling approach is applied to various hydrodynamic and hydrological models to forecast the expected errors and accuracy, using neural network and fuzzy rule-based models. Complementary modelling offers the opportunity of incorporating processes and data that are not considered by the model, without affecting the routine operation of physically-based models. The possibility that information may be obtained which will help to improve the physically-based model is also demonstrated.
