Download or read book Rick Stein s Far Eastern Odyssey written by Rick Stein and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-04-20 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rick Stein's Far Eastern Odyssey is an ambitious journey, avoiding the beaten track and tourist hot-spots, in search of the authentic food of Southeast Asia. In this accompanying book to the major BBC series, Rick shares his favourite recipes and some well-known classic dishes inspired by the fragrant ingredients and recipes he sampled from local chefs, family-run restaurants, street vendors and market stalls. In Cambodia, Rick learns how to make a national dish Samlor kako, a stir-fried pork and vegetable soup flavoured with an array of spices; in Vietnam he is shown the best recipe for Pho Bo, a Vietnamese beef noodle soup; and in Thailand, Rick tries Geng Leuong Sai Gung Lai Sai Bua, a yellow curry made with prawns and lotus shoots that you won't find outside the country. Rick Stein's Far Eastern Odyssey includes over 150 new recipes from Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Bali each complemented by Rick's colourful anecdotes from the trip and beautiful on-location photography. This is a visually-stunning culinary tribute to Southeast Asian cooking that evokes the magic of bustling markets, the sizzle of oil and the aromatic steam from a Far Eastern kitchen.

Book Japanese Inr

    Book Details:
  • Author : Julia Hutt
  • Publisher : Victoria & Albert Museum
  • Release : 1997
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 136 pages

Download or read book Japanese Inr written by Julia Hutt and published by Victoria & Albert Museum. This book was released on 1997 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive study of the inro, the small lacquer container used by Japanese men wearing traditional dress to carry items in daily use, drawing on the V&A's collection. Suspended from the belt by means of a netsuke and originally intended to hold a seal and ink or a supply of medicines, the inro gradually developed as a highly decorative dress accessory and became an object of high fashion, which is now prized by collectors. The majority of inro were made of lacquer, and include some of the finest and most innovative examples of the Japanese lacquerer's craft. The book traces the diverse origins of the inro from around 1600 until the early-20th century, and includes sections on construction and techniques of manufacture, on materials used, as well as on individual craftsmen, with photographs of their signatures. The sources of inro designs are explored, from paintings, ukiyoe prints and woodblock-printed books, with many examples illustrated. Methods of dating are also discussed, making this a useful reference for collectors and experts, while those with a general interest in Japanese art should be drawn to the craftsmanship of the individual pieces.

Book excerpt: New York Times–bestselling author Stephen Becker’s “breathlessly exciting” (Cosmopolitan) post-WWII adventure about an ex-marine on the run for his life. That summer they hanged a fat man at the Western gate as a warning and example to all. Kao was a traitor, a thief, a pimp, a black marketeer—and Jake Dodds’s partner. So what if he traded stolen military supplies with the Japanese, Jake wants to know. He never cheated me. But 1947 Peking is a savage, cutthroat city, and the United States Marine Corps sergeant is too busy saving his own skin to put up a fight over Kao’s fate. Jake served his country with honor in World War II, but when he knocks an American brigadier general through a barroom window, no amount of battlefield scars or combat medals will save him from prison. So he sets out across the Gobi Desert with a caravan of Kao’s illicit goods—and plunges into a world of violence and treachery that will take every ounce of his strength and intelligence to survive. Pursued by Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalist Army and a bandit chieftain named Tiger’s Assistant Demon, Jake disappears into the mountains—but the chaos of postwar China is inescapable, and “peace” has never been a part of this two-fisted adventurer’s vocabulary. Gripping and rich with cinematic detail, The Chinese Bandit will please history buffs and thriller fans alike and “keep readers turning pages through the night” (Los Angeles Times). The Chinese Bandit is the 1st book in the Far East Trilogy, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Book Annihilation Zones

Download or read book Annihilation Zones written by Stephen Barber and published by Creation Books. This book was released on 2002 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Documenting many shocking examples of Far Eastern atrocity, Barber takes a historical look at the reigns of such dictators as Pol Pot, who less than 25 years ago founded a state based on sexual torture, mass butchery and genocide, violating and decaptiating millions of Cambodians. Also looking at Japanese cruelty over the last 60 years, as well as many other examples, this is a graphic, relevatory document demonstrating the imperatives of homicide and xenophobia that have been passed on within the Far Eastern world. Illustrated with many rare and harrowing photos.
