Download or read book Bad Books written by Amy S. Wyngaard and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bad Books reconstructs how the eighteenth-century French author Nicolas-Edme R tif de la Bretonne and his writings were at the forefront of the development of modern conceptions of sexuality and pornography. Although certain details are well known (for example, that R tif's 1769 treatise on prostitution, Le Pornographe, is the work from which the term pornography is derived, or that he was an avid foot and shoe fetishist), much of this story has been obscured and even forgotten including how the author actively worked to define the category of obscenity and the modern pornographic genre, and how he coined the psycho-sexual term "fetish" and played a central role in the formation of theories of sexual fetishism in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Thus this book is also about literary history and how it is written: it explores how R tif, perceived as a bad author in both senses of the term, and his contributions were glossed over or condemned, such that the originality of his texts has still not been fully established. Placing R tif's novels and short stories in dialogue with his autobiographical writings as well as with contemporary and modern critical commentaries, the various chapters of the book examine the author's repeated testing of the limits of censorship to define and redefine the boundaries of obscenity; his advancement of the modern form and definition of pornography through a focus on intimacy and (female) pleasure; his detailed narrative explorations of foot and shoe fetishisms that were later appropriated by the sexologists; and his development of theories of eugenics and reproduction in his utopian science fiction. The history of R tif's texts and their reception reveals an evolution in the criteria of what is considered to be "good" or "worthy" literature--a category once defined purely on moral grounds that is increasingly seen in cultural terms. Bad Books corroborates the recent resurgence of interest in the author by showing the import of his texts, which not only designate a number of firsts in the histories of sexuality and pornography, but which also illuminate some of the defining moments in the history of French literary studies.

Download or read book Marquis de Sade written by Iwan Bloch and published by The Minerva Group, Inc.. This book was released on 2002-03 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed, analytical study of the life and times of this brilliant but bizarre personality (and the sexually erotic times he lived in), containing the essence of all his writings, based on research by Bloch in private archives of the French Government, and Bloch's discovery of de Sade's unpublished manuscript of 120 Days of Sodom in Marseilles. The work contains a precis of the 120 Days of Sodom, the first attempt systematically to catalog and describe abnormal sexual behavior -- 100 years before Krafft-Ebing. A serious academic study of France during de Sade's time, its sexual morality, de Sade's works, and the role of sadism in literature, etc., this biography precedes de Beauvoir's Faut-il Brule de Sade? and began the resuscitation and modern study of De Sade. The author Iwan Bloch, a German physician, won a distinguished name in the world of science in the fields, of medical history and anthropology.
Download or read book The Sex Life of the Foot and Shoe written by William A. Rossi and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-18 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1977, The Sex Life of the Foot and Shoe examines the realities of foot and shoe eroticism practised by almost all of us, whether consciously or unconsciously. Provocative often witty and always original, the book takes us on a walking tour through history: from Chinese footbinding (completely sexual in intent) and the medieval poulaine (perhaps the most blatantly pornographic shoe ever worn) to the outrageous distortions of the foot gladly suffered by woman over the centuries in the cause of sexual allure. The author explores the obsession with ‘sick’ and ‘tired’ feet and the huge industry that has sprung up to cater to our negativism. He gives a psychosexual guide to us via footwear, grouping men’s and women’s shoes into such categories as sexy, sexless, neuter, bisexual, sensuous, peacock, masculine, eunuch and machismo. This book will be of interest to students of history, gender studies, sexuality studies and fashion.

Download or read book De Sade Life And Works written by Iwan Bloch and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2011-10-04 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iwan Bloch, a pioneer of psycho-sexual studies alongside Krafft-Ebing, was the first biographer of the Marquis de Sade and also the discoverer in 1903 of de Sade's manuscript of The 120 Days Of Sodom, previously thought to be lost forever. Bloch's Life And Works Of De Sade, first published in 1899, remains one of the best accounts of the life of the "Divine Marquis” and is a fascinating biographical, historical and psychoanalytical work. Bloch first provides a shocking account of France in the time of de Sade, detailing its debaucheries, prostitution, pornography, crime and punishment before examining the Marquis' own life both in and out of prison. He also examines in depth de Sade's major works, including Justine, Juliette, Philosophy In The Boudoir and - in an appendix taken from Bloch's New Research On De Sade (1904) - The 120 Days Of Sodom. The closing part of Bloch's analysis is devoted to an examination of de Sade's psycho-sexual proclivities, establishing the term "sadism” and presenting one of the first major psychopathologies of this perversion and its prime purveyor.
Download or read book The Art of the Shoe written by Marie-Josèphe Bossan and published by Parkstone International. This book was released on 2019-12-09 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is more common than a pair of shoes? In a world where shoes have become an object of mass consumption, these accessories are now rid of any significance. The industry has accomplished its duty: producing a large quantity at a low price. But there was a time when the shoe symbolised the strength of the Roman legion, the power of the Medieval lords or the oppression of the Chinese woman. Its history is both vast and enthralling, as revealed by the author Marie-Josèphe Bossan. Supporting her analysis with an outstanding iconography, the author gives these commonplace objects a universal quality that sheds light on the whole of civilisation and elevates them to the rank of a work of art.
