Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous Pictures Described With Anecdotes of the Painters It has been the endeavor of the author to fix the attention of the reader upon the painting itself - to tell something of its qualities as a picture and to impart some little idea of the painter's art. Besides this, there is much collateral interest in the pictures selected - interest directly related to things which every one must sooner or later know. The original paintings have touched the hearts and interested the minds of all classes and conditions of men; and they form one of the great magnets that annually draw a vast army of travelers across seas and continents. Book Stories of Great Artists Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories of Great Artists Classic Reprint written by Olive Browne Horne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Great Artists IN trying to interest the children of our own school in some of the world' s great pictures and the artists who painted them, we felt the need of reading material on the subject. We searched for it, but found nothing that could be put into the hands of young children. The sketches contained in this book were then written. The lessons given are intended for supplementary reading in the third and fourth grades. We suggest that picture study precede the reading in class of each sketch. The abundance of good copies of the masterpieces of art, which may be obtained at a very small price, makes the accomplishment of this easy. A. Picture never fails to arouse the interest of a child. Through good pictures he may be taught to recognize and appreciate the beautiful in art. May we not hope that this will lead him to an appreciation of the good and the beautiful in whatsoever form it may be presented to him? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anecdotes of Painters, Engravers, Sculptors and Architects, and Curiosities of Art, Vol. 2 On the death of Giorgione, Titian rose rapidly into favor. He was soon afterwards invited to the court Of Alphonso, Duke of Ferrara, for whom he painted his celebrated picture Of Bacchus and Ari adne, and two other fabulous subjects, which still retain somewhat Of the style of Giorgione. It was there that he became acquainted with Ariosto, whose portrait he painted, and in return the poet spread abroad his fame in the Orlando Furioso. In 1523, the Senate Of Venice employed him to decorate the Hall of the Council Chamber, where he represented the famous Battle of Cadore, be tween the Venetians and the Imperialists - a grand performance, that greatly increased his reputation. This work was afterwards destroyed by fire, but the composition has been preserved by the burin Of Fontana. His next performance was his cele brated picture of St. Pietro Martire, in the church of ss. Giovanni e Paolo, at Venice, which is gene rally regarded as his master-piece in historical paint.
