Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous Paintings as Seen and Described by Famous Writers It will be interesting to the student to compare them with Murillo's, Correggio's, and Ribera's Holy Families. It will also be interesting to consider the different treatment that Raphael and Carpaccio give the ever popular legend of St. George and the Dragon. I have generally selected authors who are not only com petent to speak with authority, but who describe interest ingly, the pictures and the artists who made them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Pictures, as Seen and Described by Famous Writers My task has not been a light one. A few words of rapturous admiration are constantly to be met with in the pages of art-lovers, but a sympathetic study of a single work is rarely found. General comment of a given artist's work is also plentiful, while discriminating praise of individual canvases is scanty. The literary selection has, therefore, involved a great deal of research. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Paintings as Seen and Described by Great Writers To present in a book of this size a gallery of modern paintings that would be entirely satisfactory is manifestly impossible, for it is needless to remind the reader that paint ing in the Nineteenth Century has undergone so many phases and developments that it would be out of the question even to include a specimen of every important school, much less to represent every famous master. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous Paintings as Seen and Described by Famous Writers In making a second collection of masterpieces of paintings that have given pleasure and afforded inspiration to many generations of mankind, I have endeavoured to represent several great painters who did not appear in my former volume, of which this is, in some measure, a continuation. Crivelli, Luini, Giorgione, Moroni, Landseer, Mantegna and Perugino are among those who were left out of Great Pictures for lack of space. Even now, looking at the two volumes together, many favourite pictures will be missed; but it must be remembered how impossible it is to include within the limits of two small books every work that justly holds a firm place in the affections of all who love and reverence great art. The pictures in this series are not only paintings with great reputations, but each one is a painting of the very first rank. Many of them have peculiar charms of originality; for instance, Carpaccio's Due Cortigiane Veneziane which Ruskin considers one of the best pictures in the world, is unique, and it is perhaps, one of the earliest paintings in which animals and human figures apparently receive the same enthusiastic attention from the artist. Download or read book Venice as Seen and Described by Famous Writers Classic Reprint written by Esther Singleton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Venice as Seen and Described by Famous Writers As in my similar books on London and Paris, I have fol lowed a general plan of topographical arrangement. There fore, we begin with a general View of the Lagoons and the Outer Rim from which we catch a distant glimpse of Venice. We then enter a gondola and float along the Grand Canal with Gautier to point out its array of palaces and monuments of fame, beauty and historical interest, pausing to learn from Molmenti of the luxurious interiors of the Patri cian's Palaces in their prime. Santa Maria della Salute, The Rialto, the Ca' d'oro and the Fondachi claim our attention until we land and ascend the Campanile, with Henry Havard to aid us in recognising the chief buildings at our feet and the misty blue mountain peaks in the far distance. After this bird's-eye view of luminous Venice, framed by her lagoons, we enter St. Mark's to study its architecture, sculptures and mosaics, and next stop to enjoy the Piazza and learn the sig nificance of its famous columns. The Ducal Palace then claims our interest, without and within. Our travels through the city are now interrupted by the examination of some mas terpieces of Venetian painting, described by Taine; after which, we again enter our gondola to visit some of the churches of especial note, wells and squares, and side-canals, which happily for us are not yet filled up. We enjoy a few afternoon excursions to islands from Chioggia on the south to Torcello on the north, - and thus our visit ends. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wonders of Nature: As Seen and Described by Famous Writers The range is somewhat limited, for I have confined my self to the description of the grand, the curious and the awe-inspiring in nature, leaving the beauties of landscape for future treatment. Those who miss the Lakes of Kil larney or the vine-clad hills of the Rhine therefore will te member that in the following pages I have purposely neglected beautiful scenery. The professional traveller, by which I mean the emissary of a scientific society, appears very seldom here, because it is the effect produced rather than the topographical or de tailed description that I have sought. I hope this book will appeal to that large class of readers that takes pleasure in travelling by imagination, as well as to those who have actually seen the objects described and pictured here. Book Paris as Seen and Described by Famous Writers Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paris as Seen and Described by Famous Writers In the following pages I have endeavoured to apply the general plan of my former books on art and architecture. In this volume, however, it was not advisable, even if possible, to confine myself to the picturesque and artistic features of the subject. I have tried to produce a work that will fulfill the purposes of an artistic guide-book. I have selected most of the important buildings and monuments of Paris and have chosen the most interesting descriptions that I could find by various authors, English and French, who love and admire the objects of which they write. In making these selections I have tried to include as many varieties of treatment as possible, and, therefore, there will be found the views of the professional art-critic, the casual literary voyageur, the native litterateur, and the social moralist. The views of Theodore de Banville, Victor Hugo, Prosper Merimee, Louis Blanc, Louis Enault, Arsene Houssaye, and Philip Gilbert Hamerton present us with fine contrasts and side-lights; and by gathering these together, I hope to give a picture of Paris which will be, in a measure, complete. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Holland: As Seen and Described by Famous Writers The purpose of this book, planned on similar lines to my former books on Japan and Russia, is to furnish the traveller with a general view of Holland. From many writers who treat of the history, topography, manners and customs and art of this interesting country, I have selected such essays and extracts as will best contribute towards this end; and have gathered between these covers such descriptive matter and general information as I think the tourist would like to carry with him, or to refresh his memory with on his return. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Rivers of the World, as Seen and Described by Famous Writers Rivers possess so many varied attractions and have so many claims on the attention of the student of science and history, the pleasure-seeker, the traveller, the poet and the painter, that no apology need be offered for gathering into one volume selections from the works of those who have described some of the most famous streams of the world. Lyell says: "Rivers are the irrigators of the earth's surface, adding alike to the beauty of the landscape and the fertility of the soil: they carry off impurities and every sort of waste debris; and when of sufficient volume, they form the most available of all channels of communication with the interior of continents. They have ever been things of vitality and beauty to the poet, silent monitors to the moralist, and agents of comfort and civilization to all mankind." Thoreau says: "The Mississippi, the Ganges and the Nile, those journeying atoms from the Rocky Mountains, the Himmaleh and Mountains of the Moon, have a kind of personal importance in the annals of the world - the heavens are not yet drained over their sources, but the Mountains of the Moon still send their annual tribute to the Pasha without fail, as they did to the Pharaohs, though he must collect the rest of his revenue at the point of the sword. Rivers must have been the guides which conducted the footsteps of the first travellers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Buildings of America: As Seen and Described by Famous Writers; With Numerous Illustrations To our list of fine architecture should be added Christ Church in Alexandria, Independence Hall, and the old Bos ton State House. It is sometimes said there are no prevailing styles of American architecture; but even with the few examples gathered here, we are able to note a general taste.
