The PS Canberra. Small, agile and something of a battler, the Canberra has been the quiet achiever alongside larger, more prominent vessels. From her humble beginnings as a fishing boat in a mosquito fleet to one of the longest serving tourist vessels, the Canberra is a boat that is loved by many. From teetotallers and soldiers to larrikins and hard workers, the Canberra has seen thousands of people cross her path during her life. With 100 years already on the water, the Canberra has made her mark on history and found her way into the memories of many. The Murray River. A paddle steamer. One hundred years of stories.

Book 200 Years of Clyde Pleasure Steamers

Download or read book 200 Years of Clyde Pleasure Steamers written by Alistair Deayton and published by . This book was released on 2012-07-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1812, two centuries ago, the River Clyde would see a transport revolution - one that would change the economy of the river for ever. A Helensburgh hotel owner began to operate Europe's first ever commercial steam ship from Glasgow to Greenock. No longer would ships be dependent on the tide or the wind. The Comet, as his ship was known, had been built by John Wood, of Port Glasgow, and was fitted with paddle wheels. Her first voyage from Glasgow to Greenock was made at about 5mph against a headwind. Advertised to sail on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from Glasgow, the Comet operated the first scheduled steamship service in Europe. It was the start of a revolution that would see the Clyde as the greatest shipbuilding river in the world, and the river's estuary as a haven for pleasure steamers and puffers calling at the remote loch-side piers and inlets. Companies such as David MacBrayne's and the Caledonian Steam Packet Co. would be formed to operate steamers far and wide, a legacy kept alive today by the Paddle Steamer Waverley. Alistair Deayton and Iain Quinn take us through the two centuries of Clyde paddle steamers, illustrating the most famous, such as the Columba, Jeanie Deans and Waverley, illustrating not just the ships themselves but the piers they sailed from, from Rothesay to Helensburgh and from Loch Goil to Loch Long.

Book Steamboat Disasters of the Lower Missouri River

Download or read book Steamboat Disasters of the Lower Missouri River written by Vicki Berger Erwin & James Erwin and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-24 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the nineteenth century, more than three hundred boats met their end in the steamboat graveyard that was the Lower Missouri River, from Omaha to its mouth. Although derided as little more than an "orderly pile of kindling," steamboats were, in fact, technological marvels superbly adapted to the river's conditions. Their light superstructure and long, wide, flat hulls powered by high-pressure engines drew so little water that they could cruise on "a heavy dew" even when fully loaded. But these same characteristics made them susceptible to fires, explosions and snags--tree trunks ripped from the banks, hiding under the water's surface. Authors Vicki and James Erwin detail the perils that steamboats, their passengers and crews faced on every voyage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pegasus, a pioneering ship whose voyages helped promote Victorian enterprise, carried people and cargo between Leith and Hull. Goods included oil for the chemical industry, mail coaches, menageries, and racehorses. She was involved in daring sea rescues, smuggling, and several accidents. Her wreck, off Holy Island, in 1843, was the worst merchant shipping disaster in British waters, with some 70 lives lost. It was also a mystery. Why had she struck a rock on a calm, clear night? A parliamentary inquiry followed. Two of the first deep sea divers worked on recovering the dead and salvaging the wreck. Help for the victims and their families came from many sources, including the author, Charles Dickens. The stories of those lost form the appendix to this fascinating book.
