Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What's Wrong with Sex? How to Drive Your Karma Consciousness Commodified The Karma of Food The Three Poisons, Institutionalized Why We Love War These are just some of the chapters in this brilliant book from David R. Loy. In little time, Loy has become one of the most powerful advocates of the Buddhist worldview, explaining like no one else its ability to transform the sociopolitical landscape of the modern world. In this, his most accessible work to date, he offers sharp and even shockingly clear presentations of oft-misunderstood Buddhist staples-the working of karma, the nature of self, the causes of trouble on both the individual and societal levels-and the real reasons behind our collective sense of "never enough," whether it's time, money, sex, security... even war. Loy's "Buddhist Revolution" is nothing less than a radical change in the ways we can approach our lives, our planet, the collective delusions that pervade our language, culture, and even our spirituality.

Book excerpt: Haven't you ever wondered where time comes from, or what it's made of? Does it go on endlessly, or is there just a certain amount of it, like grains of sand in an egg timer? Is every bit of time the same as every other, or are there different types here and there? Why do some people struggle to cope if they have too much time, whilst others never seem to be able to find enough? What if time works differently for some people? People like Timothy Swift, for instance. He's always trying to find some time, to make time, to buy a little time...because he always has too much to do, and never enough time to do it in.But the funny thing is, no matter how little time Timothy has, he somehow gets everything done. And, remarkably, even when he doesn't have a single moment to spare, he can almost always find enough time do one more thing. And what about dreams? Does time work the same in dreams?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legal conflicts between trademark holders, social media providers and internet users have become manifest in light of wide scale, unauthorised use of the trademark logo on social media in recent decades. Arguing for the protection of the trademark logo against unauthorised use in a commercial environment, this book explores why protection enforcement should be made automatic. A number of issues are discussed including the scalability of litigation on a case-by-case basis, and whether safe harbour provisions for online service providers should be substituted for strict liability.

Book Why the Purpose of the Universe

Download or read book Why the Purpose of the Universe written by and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-11-09 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are we here? What's the point of existence? Most of us have wondered about these questions. For some, God represents an answer. For those who are unsatisfied by traditional religion, and also by the lack of an answer to these questions in atheism, Philip Goff offers a way between the two. Through an exploration of contemporary cosmology, as well as cutting-edge philosophical research on the nature of consciousness, he argues for cosmic purpose: the idea that the universe is directed towards certain goals, such as the emergence of intelligent life. In contrast to religious thinkers, Goff argues that the traditional God is a bad explanation of cosmic purpose. He explores a range of alternative possibilities for accounting for cosmic purpose: perhaps our universe was created by an evil or morally indifferent designer, or a designer with limited abilities. Perhaps we live in a computer simulation. Maybe cosmic purpose is rooted not in a conscious mind but in natural tendencies towards the good, or laws of nature with purposes built into them. Or maybe the universe is itself a conscious mind which directs itself towards certain goals. Goff scrutinises these options with analytic rigour, opening up a new avenue of philosophical enquiry into the middle ground between God and atheism. The final chapter outlines a way of living in hope that cosmic purpose is still unfolding, involving political engagement and a non-literalist interpretation of traditional religion.

Book Gold Medal Flapjack Silver Medal Life

Download or read book Gold Medal Flapjack Silver Medal Life written by Alison Mowbray and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Being an Olympian was not my first choice of career, or even my second.” Alison Mowbray wasn’t a sporty kid and thought that being good at sport was a pre-requisite for going to the Olympics. She thought she might be a doctor, a teacher, a Blue Peter presenter or maybe the first ever female naval submariner. “Then at 18 I discovered rowing. From that point on, for the next 15 years, I didn’t have a choice anymore.” You don’t choose to go to the Olympics. You lay out everything you have and let the Olympics take it – no deals, no bargains, no questions asked, no hope of return. Maybe it will be enough and the Olympics will choose you, and maybe it won’t. If you thought about the number of things outside your control between yourself and your dream, you’d never start. You just think about the things you can do, the things you can control and you start doing them and keep doing them until you get there or until control is wrested from you. That’s what you do. That is this book. “I never planned to be inspiring so really this is just the story of how I did the things I love, the very best I could do them, and how very far it took me. And if you too were not a sporty child, and you’ve never raced an Olympic final, maybe I can take you there…” This is a Silver medal life of achievement, addiction, alcoholism, anorexia and Alzheimer’s. But a Gold medal story of passion and perseverance and not letting anything or anybody get between yourself and your dream. Gold Medal Flapjack, Silver Medal Life is a fascinating sports autobiography that will appeal to fans of rowing, the Olympics and sports psychology. Written 8 years after that medal winning moment, it also deals with what happens next in an athlete’s life. There are many themes that will particularly resonate with women, and anyone who enjoys cooking will love Alison’s flapjack recipe and the many food references throughout the book. This is a book for people who love sports autobiographies and for those who never usually read them. Featured in The Bookseller

Book The Narcissism Epidemic

Download or read book The Narcissism Epidemic written by Jean M. Twenge and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-04-13 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narcissism—an inflated view of the self—is everywhere. Public figures say it’s what makes them stray from their wives. Parents teach it by dressing children in T-shirts that say "Princess." Teenagers and young adults hone it on Facebook, and celebrity newsmakers have elevated it to an art form. And it’s what’s making people depressed, lonely, and buried under piles of debt. Jean Twenge’s influential first book, Generation Me, spurred a national debate with its depiction of the challenges twenty- and thirty-somethings face in today’s world—and the fallout these issues create for educators and employers. Now, Dr. Twenge turns her focus to the pernicious spread of narcissism in today’s culture, which has repercussions for every age group and class. Dr. Twenge joins forces with W. Keith Campbell, Ph.D., a nationally recognized expert on narcissism, to explore this new plague in The Narcissism Epidemic, their eye-opening exposition of the alarming rise of narcissism and its catastrophic effects at every level of society. Even the world economy has been damaged by risky, unrealistic overconfidence. Drawing on their own extensive research as well as decades of other experts’ studies, Drs. Twenge and Campbell show us how to identify narcissism, minimize the forces that sustain and transmit it, and treat it or manage it where we find it. Filled with arresting, alarming, and even amusing stories of vanity gone off the tracks (would you like to hire your own personal paparazzi?), The Narcissism Epidemic is at once a riveting window into the consequences of narcissism, a prescription to combat the widespread problems it causes, and a probing analysis of the culture at large.

Book excerpt: In her own time, she was recognized as a woman of unparalleled power. Beautiful and intelligent, she was portrayed as alternately a ruthless murderer and helpless victim, the most loving mother and the most powerful woman of the Roman empire, using sex, motherhood, manipulation, and violence to get her way, and single-minded in her pursuit of power for herself and her son, Nero. This book follows Agrippina as a daughter, born in Cologne, to the expected heir to Augustus’s throne; as a sister to Caligula who raped his sisters and showered them with honors until they attempted rebellion against him and were exiled; as a seductive niece and then wife to Claudius who gave her access to near unlimited power; and then as a mother to Nero—who adored her until he had her assassinated.Through senatorial political intrigue, assassination attempts, and exile to a small island, to the heights of imperial power, thrones, and golden cloaks and games and adoration, Agrippina scaled the absolute limits of female power in Rome. Her biography is also the story of the first Roman imperial family—the Julio-Claudians—and of the glory and corruption of the empire itself.

Book Holding On Upside Down

Download or read book Holding On Upside Down written by Linda Leavell and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Plutarch Award for the Best Biography of 2013 A mesmerizing and essential biography of the modernist poet Marianne Moore The Marianne Moore that survives in the popular imagination is dignified, white-haired, and demure in her tricorne hat; she lives with her mother until the latter's death; she maintains meaningful friendships with fellow poets but never marries or falls in love. Linda Leavell's Holding On Upside Down—the first biography of this major American poet written with the support of the Moore estate—delves beneath the surface of this calcified image to reveal a passionate, canny woman caught between genuine devotion to her mother and an irrepressible desire for personal autonomy and freedom. Her many poems about survival are not just quirky nature studies but acts of survival themselves. Not only did the young poet join the Greenwich Village artists and writers who wanted to overthrow all her mother's pieties but she also won their admiration for the radical originality of her language and the technical proficiency of her verse. After her mother's death thirty years later, the aging recluse transformed herself, against all expectations, into a charismatic performer and beloved celebrity. She won virtually every literary prize available to her and was widely hailed as America's greatest living poet. Elegantly written, meticulously researched, critically acute, and psychologically nuanced, Holding On Upside Down provides at last the biography that this major poet and complex personality deserves.

Book Growing Up Absurd

  • Author : Paul Goodman
  • Publisher : New York Review of Books

Download or read book Growing Up Absurd written by Paul Goodman and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2012-09-11 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Goodman’s Growing Up Absurd was a runaway best seller when it was first published in 1960, and it became one of the defining texts of the New Left. Goodman was a writer and thinker who broke every mold and did it brilliantly—he was a novelist, poet, and a social theorist, among a host of other things—and the book’s surprise success established him as one of America’s most unusual and trenchant critics, combining vast learning, an astute mind, utopian sympathies, and a wonderfully hands-on way with words. For Goodman, the unhappiness of young people was a concentrated form of the unhappiness of American society as a whole, run by corporations that provide employment (if and when they do) but not the kind of meaningful work that engages body and soul. Goodman saw the young as the first casualties of a humanly repressive social and economic system and, as such, the front line of potential resistance. Noam Chomsky has said, “Paul Goodman’s impact is all about us,” and certainly it can be felt in the powerful localism of today’s renascent left. A classic of anarchist thought, Growing Up Absurd not only offers a penetrating indictment of the human costs of corporate capitalism but points the way forward. It is a tale of yesterday’s youth that speaks directly to our common future.
