He travelling extensively throughout the Midlands, not just in Birmingham and the heavily industrialised Black Country but also in the rural areas that lay beyond the industrial belt in Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Staffordshire and Shropshire. Burritt was full of enthusiasm for everything he saw and his obvious love for the area shines through in the book that he subsequently wrote about his journeys. That book, published in 1868, was entitled Walks in the Black Country and its Green Borderland. Book excerpt: Studies of child labour have examined the experiences of child workers in agriculture, mining and textile mills, yet surprisingly little research has focused on child labour in manufacturing towns. This book investigates the extent and nature of child labour in Birmingham and the West Midlands, from the mid-eighteenth century to the end of the nineteenth century. It considers the economic contributions of child workers under the age of 14 and the impact of early work on their health and education. Child labour in the region was not a short-lived stage of the early Industrial Revolution but an integral part of industry throughout the nineteenth century. Parents regarded their children as potentially valuable contributors to the family economy, encouraging families to migrate from rural areas so that their children could work from an early age in the manufacture of pins, nails, buttons, glass, locks and guns as well as tin-plating, carpet-weaving, brass-casting and other industries. The demand for young workers in Birmingham was greater than that for adults; in Mary Nejedly's detailed analysis the importance of children's earnings to the family economy becomes clear, as well as the role played by child workers in industrialisation itself. In view of the economic benefit of children's labour to families as well as employers, both children's education and health could and did suffer.As well as working at harmful processes that produced dangerous fumes and dust or exposed them to poisonous substances, children also suffered injuries in the workplace, mainly to the head, eyes and fingers, and were often subjected to ill-treatment from adult workers. The wide gulf in economic circumstances that existed between the families of skilled workers and those of unskilled workers, unemployed workers or single-parent families also becomes evident.Attitudes towards childhood changed over the course of the period, however, with a greater emphasis being placed on the role of education for all children as a means of reducing pauperism and dependence on the poor rate. Concerns about health also gradually emerged, together with laws to limit work for children both by age and hours worked. Mary Nejedly's clear-eyed research sheds fresh light on the life of working children and increases our knowledge of an important aspect of social and economic history.

It deconstructs Punjab as an ethno-spatial, ethno-linguistic and ethno-cultural construct produced by the communities who dwell there, those who have left it and those formed by new narratives of the region.By isolating imaginings of Punjab that are not centred on exclusivist regional, linguistic, sectarian or caste perspectives, contributions to this book propose the concept of free-flowing cartographies in relation to Punjab, which facilitate its imaginings as a geographical region, a social construct and a state of consciousness. The region is simultaneously imagined as a small place, a neighbourhood, a city, and a village, but also as a performative practice and a certain ways of doing things. Through focusing on a number of Punjabi spaces and communities and engaging with Punjab as a geographical region, social construct and state of consciousness, the papers in the book hope to contribute to broader debates on transnationalism, postnationalism, micronationalism, and new identity narratives emerging in the twenty first century. This book was originally published as a special issue of South Asian Diaspora.

Book excerpt: The National Forest project was established in 1995 with the aim of creating a new English forest across a 200 square mile area, embracing parts of Leicestershire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire. The National Forest's purpose is to increase woodland cover to a third of The National Forest area, whilst demonstrating sustainable, multi-purpose land use, including growing timber, providing leisure and tourism facilities and developing natural habitats. Key features of The National Forest are its linkage of previously isolated ancient woodlands and the establishment of new nature reserves, as well as the provision of a framework for farm diversification and the regeneration of former coalfields. It is delivering tangible environmental, economic and social benefits to an area of the Midlands - much of which was suffering economic and environmental decline - through planting trees to create new woods and forests. Its achievement is not so much in trebling the proportion of land with tree cover to 18 per cent, but that, in so doing, it has helped to regenerate the local economy, open up the Forest to greater public use and improve the natural environment. The success has been built on the commitment and skills of all the partner organisations, and The National Forest Company has played a crucial leadership role to enable the project to deliver effectively the multiple benefits of forestry. There needs to be a systematic approach to disseminating the company's experiences so that lessons learned can be exploited across England.
