Book One Great Family Domestic Relationships in Samuel Richardson s Novels

Download or read book One Great Family Domestic Relationships in Samuel Richardson s Novels written by Simone Höhn and published by Narr Francke Attempto Verlag. This book was released on 2021-01-25 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines concepts of morality and structures of domestic relationships in Samuel Richardson's novels, situating them in the context of eighteenth-century moral writings and reader reactions. Based on a detailed analysis of Richardson's work, this book maintains that he sought both to uphold hierarchical concepts of individual duty, and to warn of the consequences if such hierarchies were abused. In his final novel, Richardson aimed at a synthesis between social hierarchy and individual liberty, patriarchy and female self-fulfilment. His work, albeit rooted in patriarchal values, paved the way for proto-feminist conceptions of female character.

Book Long Years of Neglect

Download or read book Long Years of Neglect written by William Gilmore Simms and published by SIMMs. This book was released on 1988 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this collection of essays, the literary record of one of the first and most important men of letters from the South is finally reevaluated from the critical perspective time provides. William Gilmore Simms (1806-1870) was a poet, critic, novelist, and correspondent whose accomplishment has long been overshadowed by the events of history. As a leading writer and advocate of the antebellum south, Simms suffered from the mercurial judgments of the established publishing and literary circles of the North. Since his death he has slipped into relative obscurity with the inability or unwillingness of most of his critics to separate Simms's artistic achievements from what have been perceived as flaws in his character. Together witht he collected letters of Simms--coedited by T.C. Duncan Eaves, to whose memory this book is dedicated--the essays included in Long Years of Neglect can now begin to rectify the damage done over time to the reputation of Simms and his writing, to supersede the options of the past with scholarly and critical appraisal of the work itself, and to offer fresh insight into William Gilmore Simms as a significant and intriguing figure in early American letters. As editor Guilds speculates in his introduction, "It is conceivable that replacing myth with fact will become fashionable in Simms scholarship, and, even more important, that reading the works--instead of reading the reasons they should be avoided--will become standard practice for Simms as it is for other authors of his stamp." It was the aim of this book to initiate the realization of that goal.

Book Samuel Richardson and the Dramatic Novel

Download or read book Samuel Richardson and the Dramatic Novel written by Ira Konigsberg and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Richardson, the founder of the modern English novel, gave shape to a previously unformed literary genre. Instrumental in the development of this new art form, Ira Konigsberg contends, is the influence of the drama. Although scholars have long suspected the influence of drama on Richardson's writing, this is the first study to examine it in detail. In such matters as material, technique, and structure, Konigsberg seeks to show that Richardson found his precedents in Restoration and early eighteenth-century drama and that it was his integration of these dramatic elements with fiction which caused the mutation in genre that is responsible for the subsequent course of the English novel.
