Thk Navarres And Macombs. Sketch Op Robert Navarre. In the year 1728 there arrived at Fort Ponchartrain du Detroit, from the town of Villeroi, diocese of Meaux, France, a young man who was destined to take a most promising position in the rising colony. Of finished education and dignified bearing, his polished and courtly manners at once demanded for him a respect and deference beyond what his youth would seem to have warranted. His commission from Louis XV designated him "Sub Delege" of the Intendant of Nouvelle France, with full judicial powers over all the vast tract of country extending from Lake Erie to the Mississippi. Receiver of the Domain is also one of the functions accredited to him on the records. Zealously devoting himself to his appointed duties, we notice as a result, an entire absence of the constant remonstrances and complaints of injustice which characterized the administration in the eastern department of the colony. He lived to see the decadence of French power on this continent," but even the English invader was compelled to speak of him in terms of eulogy. Modest in his deportment, of unimpeachable integrity, powerful in influencing the councils of the savages, by whom he was beloved and adopted, no one outside his immediate family suspected that in his veins coursed the proudest blood of France. The ancient records of Meaux disclose the fact that Jean Navarre, who married Perette Barat in 1772, was the fils naturel of Antoine de Bourbon, Duke of Vendome, and consequently half-brother to Henry IV, King of France and Navarre, the predecessor of the great line of Kings forming the Bourbon dynasty. A number of the descendants in France were ennobled and occupied positions near the throne. The Count de...

Download or read book The Miami Indians written by Bert Anson and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1970 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the small group of tribes comprising the Illinois division of the Algonquian linguistic family, the Miamis emerged as a pivotal tribe only during the French and British imperial wars, the Miami Confederacy wars of the eighteenth century, and the treaty-making period of the nineteenth century. The Miamis reached their peak of political importance in the Indian confederacies which blocked the Northwest Territory in the 1790's and during the War of 1812. Their title to much of the present state of Indiana enabled them to make advantageous treaties and delay emigration until the late 1840's. The tribe's 1846-47 emigrations produced two branches, the Indiana group and the Kansas-Oklahoma group, which have maintained political co-operation in spite of deep-seated cultural antipathies and dispossession. Their solidarity has been rewarded by success in their suits before the United States Court of Claims. This account spans the years from 1658 to the present, emphasizing the occasions on which the Miamis were a decisive influence on the course of American history.

Download or read book Smith Hinchman and Grylls written by Thomas J. Holleman and published by . This book was released on 1978-10 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Smith, Hinchman & Grylls Associates, Inc., is also the story of the building of Detroit and Michigan. This long-established and respected national firm has designed more of downtown Detroit's buildings than any other company, while it has made a significant mark on architecture throughout the state. The firm has been based in Detroit since 1855, but Thomas J. Holleman and James P. Gallagher trace its history to Sheldon Smith's early practice of architecture in Sandusky, Ohio, in 1853, making it the oldest, continuously operating architectural and engineering practice in the United States. More than 230 photographs of buildings, renderings, floor plans, and documents in this volume illustrate the many remarkable achievements of Smith, Hinchman & Grylls over its 125 years. The authors trace the history of three generations of Smith architects: they describe the firm's incorporation, the wide range of its engineering and architectural achievements, and its expansion into a whole family of companies located in Ann Arbor, Louisville, Chicago, Phoenix, Washington, Toronto, Atlanta, and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The practice grew from the days when its major commissions were fine residences, small hotels, and commercial blocks, to the era of skyscrapers and manufacturing plants, and finally to the era of multi-building complexes, space laboratories, and solar collectors here and abroad. Throughout its prestigious history, the firm has demonstrated its readiness to meet any engineering and architectural challenge. Its commissions are now located throughout the United States and in such distant locations as Scotland, Saudi Arabia, and Vietnam.
