Book excerpt: Nowadays students need to be self-regulated learners because of the complex nature of learning in the 21st classroom. However, neither students nor teachers can promote academic performance alone. Families, also, need to contribute in teaching and learning by providing positive family process factors (FPF). This study aims at examining the relationship between three main factors; Family Process Factors (FPF), Self-Regulated Learning (SRL), and English language achievement in three selected Malaysian secondary schools from the district of Gombak, Kuala Lumpur. The study sample includes 202 students who have been purposefully selected to respond to two surveys: Family Process Factors Questionnaire and Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire, as well as report their recent marks in English as a Second Language (ESL) classroom. The path analysis technique, using AMOS data-fitting program and Sobel test of mediation, supported the hypothesized model by showing statistically significant path coefficients and fit indices. Primarily, it was found that FPF positively influences SRL. Secondly, SRL positively affects Achievement and, finally, SRL plays the role of mediator between FPF and Achievement. Thus, further interest in fostering SRL strategies among secondary school students should be paid by Malaysian parents in particular and educationists in general.

Abstract: Self-regulated Learning in Hong Kong 2 ABSTRACT This study was aimed to examine how SRL components predict academic achievement and to compare the profile of self-regulated learning (SRL) of high and low achievers. Motivation and action control constructs were included in the SRL model. Form Two students (eighth graders equivalent) (N=375) from two secondary schools in top and bottom bandings completed self-regulated learning questionnaire. Their exam results of three core subjects (Chinese, English and Mathematics) were collected. Multiple regression analysis and a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) were used to analyze the results. Subject specificity was shown in relation to SRL profile. In general, motivational and action control components were both needed to process SRL and boost the academic performance. Mastery goal was found as a salient variable that high and low achievers distinguished. Among the other SRL components, mastery goal, or generally speaking learning goals, is the determinant in the SRL process. Implications of the result are discussed. Book excerpt: In recent years, educators have become increasingly concerned with students' attempts to manage their own learning and achievement efforts through activities that influence the instigation, direction and persistence of those efforts. In 1989, Zimmerman and Schunk edited the first book devoted to this topic. They assembled key theorists offering a range of perspectives on how students self-regulate their academic functioning. One purpose of that volume was to provide theoretical direction to ongoing as well as nascent efforts to explore academic self-regulatory processes. Since that date, there has been an exponential surge in research. This second volume on academic self-regulation offers the fruits of the first generation of research. It also addresses a number of key issues that have arisen since then such as how self-regulation differs from such related constructs as motivation and metacognition, and whether students can be taught self-regulatory skills. The contributors reveal an interesting, uplifting, and at times, disturbing picture of how students grapple with the day-to-day problems of achieving in circumstances with inherent limitations and obstacles. This volume provides insight into the source of students' capabilities to surmount adversities -- the origins of their self-initiated processes designed to improve learning, motivation, and achievement. The text is organized on the basis of a conceptual framework that analyzes academic self-regulation into four major dimensions. That model is presented in the first chapter, and key processes that influence each of these dimensions are discussed by prominent researchers in the chapters that follow. Because each chapter is written to follow a common format, this work provides a level of continuity and parsimony normally found only in authored textbooks.
