Book excerpt: "What this country needs is a few good men-husbands and fathers who are willing to love and lead their households with manly resolve and godly vision. Frankly, the Church needs these men every bit as much as the rest of the country. For more than ten years, Philip Lancaster has been instilling hope, and calling fathers to their rightful duties as family prophets, priests, protectors, and providers. Through his magazine Patriarch, Phil has reached thousands with both the vision and the tools necessary for family revival. Now, in his first book, Phil lays-in simple, easy-to-understand concepts-the biblical foundation necessary for men to turn their hearts to home and change the world. Soundly reasoned and biblically supported, Family Man, Family Leader is appropriate for any man, old or young."

Download or read book The Expeditionary Man written by Rich Wagner and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-05-26 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Your career is compelling. Your ministry at church is God’s calling. But do you realize how these outside activities capture your heart and steal your time and energy from your family? Adventure becomes what you want to do, while family is what you are supposed to do. Now author Rich Wagner offers a bold alternative. In this personal and revealing book, the author challenges Christian men to harness their career ambitions and limit their ministries while their children are at home. Wagner shows how the pull of business success and the call to church ministries are compelling–even seductive. But if you allow your heart to be captured by career and church, you put your kid’s spiritual lives at risk. Far too many Christian children grow up with the vision of a loving Father in heaven, but live with the reality of an earthly father who seems more devoted to outside interests than he is to them. As a result, many children in Christian families today drift away from their faith as they become adults. Wagner reveals how accepting his challenge will not only result in spiritually healthy kids, but also give you the true adventure for which every Christian man yearns.

Book Family Man

  • Author : Scott Coltrane
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

  • ISBN : 0199938105
  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book Family Man written by Scott Coltrane and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996-03-28 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The typical American family has changed dramatically since the days of "Ozzie and Harriet" and "Father Knows Best." Double-income families are now the rule, and fathers are much more involved in raising the children and cleaning house. Reactions to these changes have been diverse, ranging from grave misgivings to a sense of liberation and new possibility. Groups as diverse as Promise Keepers, the Million Man March, and Robert Bly's mythopoetic men's movement tell us that fathers are important. From the fundamentalist right to the feminist left, opinions about the changing nature of the family--and the consequent rethinking of gender roles--have been vehement, if not always very well-founded. In Family Man, sociologist Scott Coltrane brings a wealth of compelling evidence to this debate over the American family. Drawing on his own extensive research and many fascinating interviews, Coltrane explodes many of the common myths about shared parenting, provides first-hand accounts of men's and women's feelings in two-job families, and reveals some innovative solutions that couples have developed to balance job and family commitments. Readers will find an insightful discussion of precisely how and why family life has changed, what forms it may take in the future, and what new kinds of fathers may be on the horizon. The author firmly places these questions within a broad contextual framework. He provides, for instance, an illuminating history of the family that shows that, far from being a fixed structure, the family has always adapted to changing economic, social, and ideological pressures. And by examining how families operate in a variety of non-industrial societies, he demonstrates that our own notions of gender-specific work and parenting roles are culturally rather than biologically determined, and thus inherently flexible. And indeed these roles are changing. While contemporary American women still perform the bulk of domestic tasks, Family Man gives us decisive evidence that men are becoming increasingly involved in both housework and childrearing. Coltrane argues convincingly that this trend will continue. Given the current economic situation--with two-job households now the norm--and the gradual ideological shift away from restrictive gender roles, more and more couples will find it both necessary and desirable to share the workload. More important, Coltrane suggests that as fathers participate more fully in raising their children and performing traditionally female household tasks, men will themselves be transformed by the experience in profoundly positive ways and American society as a whole will move closer to true gender equity. Family Man succeeds brilliantly in bringing clarity, perspective, and above all hope to a discussion that is too often shrill, chaotic, and beset with the rhetoric of nostalgia. It shows us not only exactly where the family is today, but where it has been and what it may become.

Upon his return to St. Kitts-Nevis in the late 1940s, Stevens soon found himself in the center of a developing political confl ict between the two islands. Each of the three men was destined to leave his mark on the islands politics and history. Walwyn was soon labeled a traitor to Nevis. Later, despite the fact that Stevens and Daniel worked together in the same political party for many years, the two men came to mistrust the vision and intent of each others politics. The Caribbean does have a long history of authoritarian and forever leadership. However, Stevens was careful to focus on empowering younger Nevisians to become future leaders and politicians. He was interested in preserving the environment and the islands traditional culture. Often, Mr. Stevens stood in defense of the common citizens rights, against wealthy elites. He also played a critical role in encouraging a less combative relationship between the people of St. Kitts and Nevis. This is his story:

Book Too Much and Never Enough

Download or read book Too Much and Never Enough written by Mary L. Trump and published by Simon & Schuster. This book was released on 2020-07-14 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this revelatory, authoritative portrait of Donald J. Trump and the toxic family that made him, Mary L. Trump, a trained clinical psychologist and Donald’s only niece, shines a bright light on the dark history of their family in order to explain how her uncle became the man who now threatens the world’s health, economic security, and social fabric. Mary Trump spent much of her childhood in her grandparents’ large, imposing house in the heart of Queens, New York, where Donald and his four siblings grew up. She describes a nightmare of traumas, destructive relationships, and a tragic combination of neglect and abuse. She explains how specific events and general family patterns created the damaged man who currently occupies the Oval Office, including the strange and harmful relationship between Fred Trump and his two oldest sons, Fred Jr. and Donald. A firsthand witness to countless holiday meals and interactions, Mary brings an incisive wit and unexpected humor to sometimes grim, often confounding family events. She recounts in unsparing detail everything from her uncle Donald’s place in the family spotlight and Ivana’s penchant for regifting to her grandmother’s frequent injuries and illnesses and the appalling way Donald, Fred Trump’s favorite son, dismissed and derided him when he began to succumb to Alzheimer’s. Numerous pundits, armchair psychologists, and journalists have sought to parse Donald J. Trump’s lethal flaws. Mary L. Trump has the education, insight, and intimate familiarity needed to reveal what makes Donald, and the rest of her clan, tick. She alone can recount this fascinating, unnerving saga, not just because of her insider’s perspective but also because she is the only Trump willing to tell the truth about one of the world’s most powerful and dysfunctional families.

Book excerpt: Herb Mills, 1931 - 2018Herb Mills was on his way to a PhD and career at a major university as a brilliant political theorist when he dropped out of the University of California and became a longshoreman, and a member of the independent International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU), long known for its militancy and radical program, and its President Harry Bridges who on four separate occasions the United States government sought (unsuccessfully) to deport because of his alleged membership in the Communist Party. At Berkeley, Herb was an important early 1960s leader in the emerging northern student movement, whose birthplace was in many ways there. Representing the student movement, he travelled nationally to speak against the House Un-American Activities Committee's campaign to make the student movement a Communist plot. In ILWU, Herb rose from the rank-and-file to become a shop steward, chair of the steward's council, business agent and secretary-treasurer of Local 10. He was a delegate to the coast-wide contract negotiating committee, strategist of ILWU's successful effort to stop U.S. arms shipments to the dictatorship in El Salvador, and similarly conceived the plan that saved South Korean leader and later elected president Kim Dae Jung from the military dictatorship's plan to execute him. (Kim invited Herb as his guest to the inauguration.) Within the union, Herb became a major Bridges' and Mechanization & Modernization (M&M) Agreement critic because it undermined the solidarity of the union. Herb wrote extensively about his longshore work and the union. He engaged in four-days of interviews with Harvey Schwartz, ILWU oral historian. He was the key consultant to The Smithsonian's longshoring exhibit in its permanent Transportation Section. He took a break for a year and completed his PhD on Deuel Vocational Institute, a prison near the Bay Area. Herb was the engaged father of two daughters and a son, an actor, and my best friend for 60 years. This book is a tribute to him. While I'm the editor, it expresses the collective effort of many.--Mike Miller, Editor

Book Quivering Families

    Book Details:
  • Author : Emily Hunter McGowin
  • Publisher : Fortress Press
  • Release : 2018-05-01
  • ISBN : 1506446604
  • Pages : 295 pages

Download or read book Quivering Families written by Emily Hunter McGowin and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American evangelicals are known for focusing on the family, but the Quiverfull movement intensifies that focus in a significant way. Often called "Quiverfull" due to an emphasis on filling their "quivers" with as many children as possible (Psalm 127:5), such families are distinguishable by their practices of male-only leadership, homeschooling, and prolific childbirth. Their primary aim is "multigenerational faithfulness" - ensuring their descendants maintain Christian faith for many generations. Many believe this focus will lead to the Christianization of America in the centuries to come. Quivering Families is a first of its kind project that employs history, ethnography, and theology to explore the Quiverfull movement in America. The book considers a study of the movement's origins, its major leaders and institutions, and the daily lives of its families. Quivering Families argues that despite the apparent strangeness of their practice, Quiverfull is a thoroughly evangelical and American phenomenon. Far from offering a countercultural vision of the family, Quiverfull represents an intensification of longstanding tendencies. The movement reveals the weakness of evangelical theology of the family and underlines the need for more critical and creative approaches.
