Book excerpt: The Family Lineage of John Canady Jenkins and Descendants of Cherokee County, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, and Monroe County, Tennessee provides a lineage of John Jenkins who was born November 17th, 1848, down through history to more modern-day descendants who were born as recently as the 1900's and living predominately in the counties listed in the book title. This book provides at least six (6) generations of direct descendants and their spouses. If you are a serious or hobby genealogist, and researching the Jenkins lineage, this book could provide you some lineage data and vital statistics information you have been seeking to link your family or surname to this line of Jenkins. The family lineage published here are compilations of years of transcriptions from multiple resources, personal family interviews, ancestor's compilations, county history books, online and Internet genealogy groups, and other library database or book resources. The author spent over 20 years compiling the information in this publication for this specific family surname, as well as hundreds of other surnames that interlinked and intertwined to the author's own family and ancestry surnames. Do enjoy the fruits of the research to expand the reader's knowledge of this family surname. As noted on the copyright page, any errors may result from human transcription mistakes, original data having errors or omissions, or even some 'software burps' or data entry errors (e.g., a husband may have been entered as a spouse twice, thus shows up as a duplicate). The author suggests that genealogy researchers take the information in this book and use it as a 'with a grain of salt' baseline to further research on their own to confirm all the data in this publication against their own. Download or read book Their Determination to Remain written by Lance Greene and published by University Alabama Press. This book was released on 2023-10-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remarkable story of a North Carolina Cherokee community who avoided forced removal on the Trail of Tears During the 1838 forced Cherokee removal by the US government, a number of close-knit Cherokee communities in the Southern Appalachian Mountains refused to relinquish their homelands, towns, and way of life. Using a variety of tactics, hundreds of Cherokees avoided the encroaching US Army and remained in the region. In his book Their Determination to Remain: A Cherokee Community's Resistance to the Trail of Tears in North Carolina, Lance Greene explores the lives of wealthy plantation owners Betty and John Welch who lived on the southwestern edge of the Cherokee Nation. John was Cherokee and Betty was White. Although few Cherokees in the region participated in slavery, the Welches held nine African Americans in bondage. During removal, the Welches assisted roughly 100 Cherokees hiding in the steep mountains. Afterward, they provided land for these Cherokees to rebuild a new community, Welch's Town. Betty became a wealthy and powerful plantation mistress because her husband could no longer own land. Members of Welch's Town experienced a transitional period in which they had no formal tribal government or clear citizenship yet felt secure enough to reestablish a townhouse, stickball fields, and dance grounds. Greene's innovative study uses an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating historical narrative and archaeological data, to examine how and why the Welches and members of Welch's Town avoided expulsion and reestablished their ways of life in the midst of a growing White population who resented a continued Cherokee presence. The Welch strategy included Betty's leadership in demonstrating outwardly their participation in modern Western lifestyles, including enslavement, as John maintained a hidden space--within the boundaries of their land--for the continuation of traditional Cherokee cultural practices. Their Determination to Remain explores the complexities of race and gender in this region of the antebellum South and the real impacts of racism on the community.

Download or read book Georgia Indian Depredation Claims written by Carlton J. Thaxton and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 1081 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstracts of claims compiled in a WPA project in 1938, published in seven typescript volumes as "Georgia Indian depredation claims against the Creek Indians," dating from 1787-1825. This compilation was from original documents in the Georgia Dept. of Archives and History. An 8th volume has the spine title "Georgia Indian depredations 1827-1830," and is a part of this series of claims, but it is a federal document, entitled Indian Depredations in Georgia, 21st Congress, 1st session, House of Representatives, War Department, Document no. 25, and is dated 1830. These claims and letters tell a story of frontier life found nowhere else than in diaries and letters. They mention the deaths of husbands, wives and children and the loss of homes, horses and farm animals, crops and personal property. Many of these claims are witnessed by neighbors and local officials, so there are many names involved other than those of the claimants. This book contains abstracts of documents, full text of some documents which could not be easily abstracted, a name index and a place name index.--From Preface, p. iv.
