Book Haunted Houses and Family Ghosts of Kentucky

Download or read book Haunted Houses and Family Ghosts of Kentucky written by William Lynwood Montell and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2001-09-21 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kentucky has a rich legacy of ghostly visitations. Lynwood Montell has harvested dozens of tales of haunted houses and family ghosts from all over the Bluegrass state. Many of the stories were collected from elders by young people and are recounted exactly as they were gathered. Haunted Houses and Family Ghosts of Kentucky includes chilling tales such as that of the Tan Man of Pike County, who trudges invisibly through a house accompanied by the smell of roses, and the famed Gray Lady of Liberty Hall in Frankfort, a houseguest who never left. Montell tells the story of a stormy night, shortly before Henry Clay's death, when the ghost of the statesman's old friend Daniel Boone calls upon him, and then recounts the more modern story of the ghouls that haunt the rehearsal house of the band The Kentucky Headhunters. Included are accounts of haunted libraries, mansions, bedrooms, log cabins, bathrooms, college campuses, apartments, furniture, hotels, and distilleries, as well as reports of eerie visitations from ghostly grandmothers, husbands, daughters, uncles, cousins, babies, slaves, Civil War soldiers, dogs, sheep, and even wildcats. Almost all of Kentucky's 120 counties are represented. Though the book emphasizes the stories themselves, Montell offers an introduction discussing how local history, local character, and local flavor are communicated across the generations in these colorful stories.

Book What America Watched

Download or read book What America Watched written by Marsha Ann Tate and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-01-14 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although television critics have often differed with the public with respect to the artistic and cultural merits of television programming, over the last half-century television has indubitably influenced popular culture and vice versa. No matter what reasons are cited--the characters, the actors, the plots, the music--television shows that were beloved by audiences in their time remain fondly remembered. This study covers the classic period of popular television shows from the 1960s through the 1990s, focusing on how regular viewers interacted with television shows on a personal level. Bridging popular and scholarly approaches, this book discovers what America actually watched and why through documents, footage, visits to filming locations, newspapers, and magazine articles from the shows' eras. The book features extensive notes and bibliography.

Book When We Were Ghouls

Download or read book When We Were Ghouls written by Amy E. Wallen and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Amy E. Wallen's southern, blue-collar, peripatetic family was transferred from Ely, Nevada, to Lagos, Nigeria, she had just turned seven. From Nevada to Nigeria and on to Peru, Bolivia, and Oklahoma, the family wandered the world, living in a state of constant upheaval. When We Were Ghouls follows Wallen's recollections of her family who, like ghosts, came and went and slipped through her fingers, rendering her memories unclear. Were they a family of grave robbers, as her memory of the pillaging of a pre-Incan grave site indicates? Are they, as the author's mother posits, "hideous people?" Or is Wallen's memory out of focus? In this quick-paced and riveting narrative, Wallen exorcizes these haunted memories to clarify the nature of her family and, by extension, her own character. Plumbing the slipperiness of memory and confronting what it means to be a "good" human, When We Were Ghouls links the fear of loss and mortality to childhood ideas of permanence. It is a story about family, surely, but it is also a representation of how a combination of innocence and denial can cause us to neglect our most precious earthly treasures: not just our children but the artifacts of humanity and humanity itself.

Book The Book of Ghouls

  • Author : David Hambling
  • Publisher : Crossroad Press
  • Release : 2024-12-24
  • ISBN : 1637891458
  • Pages : 344 pages

Download or read book The Book of Ghouls written by David Hambling and published by Crossroad Press. This book was released on 2024-12-24 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ghouls have a special place in the works of H.P. Lovecraft, as the monstrous eaters of the dead are the only creatures from traditional folklore to stalk through his Mythos. Lovecraft’s universe was science fictional rather than fantastic, and his nightmare creations were alien rather than supernatural. While his ghouls were inspired by a fascination with the Arabian Nights, they have an added dimension of horror: they were once human. In The Book of Ghouls, five Neo-Mythos writers known for cosmic horror explore Lovecraftian ghouls’ sinister, cannibalistic relationship with humanity: C.T. Phipps (Cthulhu Armageddon), Matthew Davenport (The Adventures of Andrew Doran), David Hambling (the Harry Stubbs series), Eric Malikyte (Mind’s Horizon), and Philip Hemplow (Sarcophagus, Exoteric). In this volume you will meet with ghouls everywhere from the steamy jungles of the Vietnam war to the refined air of Arkham’s high society, from a bizarre festival on a remote Scottish island to small town America, and from 1920s South London to the mystical Dreamlands. The Book of Ghouls is the latest in the acclaimed Books of Cthulhu series inviting you to face the terrifying creatures that lurk just beyond the edge of human understanding.

Book excerpt: Family Plots traces the fault lines of the Freudian family romance and holds that the "family plot" is very much alive in post-World War II American culture. It cuts across all genres, insinuating, criticizing, reinforcing, and reinventing itself in all forms of cultural production and consumption. The family romance is everywhere because the family itself is nowhere.
