Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study utilized an explanatory correlational design to examine the relationship which exists between the predictor variables of adolescent's perception of family adaptation, cohesion, and communication, parental use of substances, adolescent age and gender and the criterion variables of adolescent behavioral intention and self-reported use of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs. The theoretical perspectives of the study, derived from developmental theory and the Circumplex Model of Marital and Family Systems viewed the adolescent stage as a period in which the entire family is challenged to balance levels of adaptation and cohesion in order to facilitate individuation and autonomy of adolescent members. Use of controlled substances by adolescents are considered behaviors which may be influenced by patterns of interaction within the family system. The sample consisted of 306 male and female high school students. Following consent from the student and at least one parent the adolescent was asked to complete four paper and pencil questionnaires. These questionnaires included the Demographic Survey; the Primary Prevention Awareness, Attitude and Usage Scale; the FACES III; and the Parent-Adolescent Communication Scale. Utilizing measures of central tendency and canonical correlation, the data analysis statistically addressed the relationships between the two variables sets. The findings indicated that balanced levels of family functioning and low usage of substances by parents has a strong relationship with decreased substance use by adolescents. Conversely, non-balanced families and those in which parents use substances more often, are families in which the adolescents are more likely to use substances. Age and gender had no significant relation to adolescent substance use or levels of family functioning. Family adaptation, cohesion and communication, and parental role modeling are variables that appear to have a significant impact upon the decisions adolescents make concerning use of alcohol, tobacco products and illicit drugs.

Book The Family Context of Adolescent Drug Use

Download or read book The Family Context of Adolescent Drug Use written by Robert H Coombs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an essential volume for educators, social workers, health care professionals, and parents who are frustrated by the consuming power of drugs over the lives of young people and looking for answers to this enormous problem. In this unique and highly practical volume, experts concentrate on the family--the foundation of mental health and social control--as the most positive force in the prevention of adolescent drug use. Despite the “war on drugs,” young people in large numbers continue to use substances. This instructive guide focuses on educating and strengthening families--which makes stronger children who are less likely to use drugs--instead of the traditional efforts based on rehabilitation instead of prevention. It offers instructive background information about societal forces that affect families and make it difficult to raise drug-free youngsters. Family differences are discussed, such as family structure, parenting styles, ethnic and cultural characteristics. Contributors thoroughly examine practical, effective interventions--at home, at school, and with peers--that are positive rather than negative, instructional rather than punitive, and preventive instead of remedial.

Book excerpt: Thus, substance-abusing adolescents experiencing inadequate family structure and functioning will be at a serious disadvantage with regard to recovery. Their recovery, however, is likely to be enhanced if family functioning can be improved. Deficits in family functioning may be related to dimensions of authority, roles, boundaries, communication, and routines. Parental authority may be eroded and roles confused; boundaries may be blurred or violated; communication may be dysfunctional and conflict laden; and family structure or routine may be lacking. Inadequate parenting skills or poor understanding of family dynamics may also contribute to a chaotic or otherwise dysfunctional family context.

Book Adolescent Drinking and Family Life

Download or read book Adolescent Drinking and Family Life written by Geoff Lowe and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-29 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1993, Adolescent Drinking and Family Life portrays teenage drinking, not as a symptom of pathology, but as a perfectly normal developmental phase within the context of the home environment. Drinking is predominantly social behaviour and the family is seen as a major agent of socialization. The authors have therefore explored family dynamics and the influence which the home environment has upon adolescent drinking to come up with a new theoretical model. A major feature of this approach is the interaction of ideas from family life psychology and human geography. The authors present a typology of domestic regimes illustrated by case studies of boundary enforcement and transgression. The general theme of boundary transgression, applied here to both the psychosocial environment and built form, represents an interesting new theoretical perspective. The integration of these two fields is an innovation which should stimulate further interdisciplinary work in adolescence and addiction research. Adolescent Drinking and Family Life will be interesting to researchers and practitioners in adolescence, family dynamics, and alcohol as well as any social scientist with an interest in the link between behaviour and the home environment. This new approach had important implications for health education and for interventions concerned with adolescent alcohol use at the time. Today it can be read in its historical context.
