Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Juvenile delinquency remains a significant issue in the United States, and rehabilitation is the focus for juvenile offenders. Many facilities that provide treatment for juvenile offenders are lacking in providing family therapy. This project examined articles to determine which family modality was the most effective in reintegrating juvenile offenders. Twelve articles between 2004 to 2018 were systemically reviewed to (a) identify the types of family modalities commonly used for juvenile offenders, (b) assess the improvements in substance use, emotional and behavioral symptoms, family functioning, and recidivism, and (c) which family modality was the most effective in these domains. The family modalities used prevalently for juvenile offenders were Multidimensional Family Therapy (MDFT), Functional Family Therapy (FFT), Brief Strategic Family Therapy (BSFT), and Multisystemic Therapy (MST). MSDT improved substance use, emotional/behavioral symptoms, family/peer functioning, school behavior, and reduced recidivism. FFT declined recidivism and showed a slight improvement in behavioral/emotional symptoms, though the control group found the same results. BSFT provided improvement of family functioning per parents’ reports and decreased substance use in juveniles, though increased in parents. MST improved emotional disorders, work and school functioning and decreased recidivism. In conclusion, MDFT proved to be most effective, showing improvement in the assessed domains plus the unexpected school behavior domain. Limitations were only twelve articles, small sample sizes within articles, longitudinal studies can have attrition, sample sizes not being diverse, and the developer of MDFT was part of two studies.

Its approach is as relevant to professional burglary as to episodic delinquency or white collar crime. Braithwaite argues that some societies have higher crime rates than others because of their different processes of shaming wrongdoing. Shaming can be counterproductive, making crime problems worse. But when shaming is done within a cultural context of respect for the offender, it can be an extraordinarily powerful, efficient and just form of social control. Braithwaite identifies the social conditions for such successful shaming. If his theory is right, radically different criminal justice policies are needed - a shift away from punitive social control toward greater emphasis on moralizing social control. This book will be of interest not only to criminologists and sociologists, but to those in law, public administration and politics who are concerned with social policy and social issues.

Book excerpt: Motherhood after Incarceration: Community Reintegration for Mothers in the Criminal Legal System explores the relationships of women who have been recently released from prison or jail with their children immediately after periods of incarceration. The analysis draws on in-depth interviews with 39 women who are mothers and who had recently been released in the Portland, Oregon, metropolitan area. Using data collected from these interviews, the authors address three interrelated questions: (1) How does incarceration affect mother/child bonds? (2) What obstacles interfere with successful reintegration of these mothers into the community? (3) Do mothers who regain immediate custody of their children after incarceration reintegrate better than those with delayed (or no) resumption of child custody? Implications of these findings for policy are explored. The research results demonstrate the struggles justice-involved mothers experience over time as they seek to reintegrate into the community and resolve their relationships with their children, while also struggling with employment, housing, family relationships, and avoiding situations that might ultimately lead to recidivism. The authors suggest that policies for reducing recidivism among reentering women should provide more resources for housing, childcare, mental health, and job training and coaching. Further, there are often behavioral and emotional repercussions associated with the lengthy separation of mother and child, which highlights the need for parenting support for these mothers and their children, including social and emotional counseling, and resources directed toward the maintenance of family ties. This book’s detailed look at motherhood after incarceration, both for mothers with custody and without, will appeal to academics, policy makers, community advocates and activists, and undergraduate and postgraduate students in social science courses on correctional policy, gender and crime, and social work.

Book excerpt: Adolescence is a distinct, yet transient, period of development between childhood and adulthood characterized by increased experimentation and risk-taking, a tendency to discount long-term consequences, and heightened sensitivity to peers and other social influences. A key function of adolescence is developing an integrated sense of self, including individualization, separation from parents, and personal identity. Experimentation and novelty-seeking behavior, such as alcohol and drug use, unsafe sex, and reckless driving, are thought to serve a number of adaptive functions despite their risks. Research indicates that for most youth, the period of risky experimentation does not extend beyond adolescence, ceasing as identity becomes settled with maturity. Much adolescent involvement in criminal activity is part of the normal developmental process of identity formation and most adolescents will mature out of these tendencies. Evidence of significant changes in brain structure and function during adolescence strongly suggests that these cognitive tendencies characteristic of adolescents are associated with biological immaturity of the brain and with an imbalance among developing brain systems. This imbalance model implies dual systems: one involved in cognitive and behavioral control and one involved in socio-emotional processes. Accordingly adolescents lack mature capacity for self-regulations because the brain system that influences pleasure-seeking and emotional reactivity develops more rapidly than the brain system that supports self-control. This knowledge of adolescent development has underscored important differences between adults and adolescents with direct bearing on the design and operation of the justice system, raising doubts about the core assumptions driving the criminalization of juvenile justice policy in the late decades of the 20th century. It was in this context that the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) asked the National Research Council to convene a committee to conduct a study of juvenile justice reform. The goal of Reforming Juvenile Justice: A Developmental Approach was to review recent advances in behavioral and neuroscience research and draw out the implications of this knowledge for juvenile justice reform, to assess the new generation of reform activities occurring in the United States, and to assess the performance of OJJDP in carrying out its statutory mission as well as its potential role in supporting scientifically based reform efforts.
