Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a Foreword by Desmond Tutu, Generation at Risk brings insightful perspectives from experienced practitioners and researchers on how a better future can be secured for the millions of children who are being orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS. The current situation of these children is grim, and while there has been significant action by governments, international organizations, religious bodies, and non-governmental organizations, the vast majority of children made vulnerable by AIDS have not benefited from any assistance beyond their own extended family and community. A Generation at Risk explains in straightforward terms what is required to fill this gap. The book addresses what needs to be done in the areas of education, community mobilization and capacity building, economic strengthening at household and community levels, psychosocial support, and the protection of children and the fulfilment of their rights.

The book makes a significant contribution to the growing research evidence on children and young people with caring responsibilities ('young carers') and the impacts of HIV and AIDS on families globally. It examines caring relationships within families affected by HIV and AIDS; the outcomes of caregiving; children's and families' resilience; the factors influencing whether children become involved in care work; and local and global policy responses. It also provides insight into the perspectives of parents living with HIV and service providers working with families. This book will be of interest to policy makers and practitioners in the field of HIV and AIDS, and to researchers, academics and students concerned with international development, social policy, human geography, childhood and youth studies, social work, health and social care, education, children's services and nursing and palliative care.

Book Children and AIDS

Download or read book Children and AIDS written by Margaret Lombe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disproportional loss of individuals to HIV/AIDS in their most productive years raises concerns over the welfare of surviving members of affected families and communities. One consequence of the rapid increase in adult mortality is the rise in the proportion of children who are orphaned. Sub-Saharan Africa, accounts for about 90 percent of these. Mainly due to the staggering toll of HIV/AIDS, research effort has focused on treatment and prevention. Children have received attention primarily in relation to 'mother to child transmission' and paediatric AIDS. These issues are important and compelling but fail to capture the whole story - the unprecedented surge in the number of children made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS. In this book we reflect on the plight of children classified as vulnerable, review interventions implemented to improve their welfare and grapple with the concept of vulnerability as it relates to human rights and the African child.

Book A Generation at Risk

Download or read book A Generation at Risk written by Robyn Pharoah and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of children left orphaned and vulnerable by HIV/AIDS is receiving increasing attention worldwide. Yet, even as the global community acknowledges the human tragedy that orphaning on the scale heralded by the HIV/AIDS epidemic represents, it is widely speculated that large numbers of orphans may themselves represent a security challenge. By reducing the resources available to children and destabilising the institutions on which they depend - such as the family, school and community - it is argued that HIV/AIDS may severely affect children's development, creating generations of disenfranchised and potentially dysfunctional young people left with little alternative but engage in criminal and other threatening activities.
