One appeared in the "New Quarterly," one in "Macmillan's," and the rest in the "Cornhill Magazine." To the "Cornhill" I owe a double debt of thanks; first, that I was received there in the very best society, and under the eye of the very best of editors; and second, that the proprietors have allowed me to republish so considerable an amount of copy. These nine worthies have been brought together from many different ages and countries. Not the most erudite of men could be perfectly prepared to deal with so many and such various sides of human life and manners. To pass a true judgment upon Knox and Burns implies a grasp upon the very deepest strain of thought in Scotland - a country far more essentially different from England than many parts of America; for, in a sense, the first of these men re-created Scotland, and the second is its most essentially national production. To treat fitly of Hugo and Villon would involve yet wider knowledge, not only of a country foreign to the author by race, history, and religion, but of the growth and liberties of art. Of the two Americans, Whitman and Thoreau, each is the type of something not so much realized as widely sought after among the late generations of their countrymen; and to see them clearly in a nice relation to the society that brought them forth, an author would require a large habit of life among modern Americans. As for Yoshida, I have already disclaimed responsibility; it was but my hand that held the pen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men and Manners in America, Vol. 1 of 2 Had I been conscious, in what I have written of the United States, of being influenced by any motive incompatible with perfect fairness of purpose, you are perhaps the last person to whose judgement I should venture an appeal. By no one will the arguments I have advanced be more rigidly examined, and the grist of truth more carefully winnowed from the chaff of sophistry and declamation. For this reason, and in testimony of sincere esteem, I now publicly connect your name with the present work. Book excerpt: Familiar Studies of Men and Books: large print By Robert Louis Stevenson Familiar Studies of Men and Books By Robert Louis Stevenson On two most important points, Dr. Japp added to my knowledge, and with the same blow fairly demolished that part of my criticism. First, if Thoreau were content to dwell by Walden Pond, it was not merely with designs of selfimprovement, but to serve mankind in the highest sense. Hither came the fleeing slave; thence was he despatched along the road to freedom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men, Women, and Books, Vol. 1 of 2: A Selection of Sketches, Essays, and Critical Memoirs, From His Uncollected Prose Writings Should anything else in the impulsive portions of those essays, which were written when he was young, appear a little out of the pale of recognized manners, in point of style and animal spirits, the new reader will be good enough to understand, what old ones have long been aware of, and grown kind to, - namely, that the writer comes of a tropical race; and that what might have been afi'ectation in a colder blood, was only enthusiasm in a warm one. He is not con scious. However, of having suffered anything to re main, to which a reasonable critic could object. He has pruned a few passages, in order that he might not seem to take undue advantage of an extempore or anonymous allowance and in later years, particularly when seated on the critical bench, he has been pleased, and perhaps profited, in conforming himself to the customs of the court. But had he attempted to alter the general spirit of his writings, he would have belied the love of truth that is in him, and even shown himself ungrateful to public warrant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Man, 1901, Vol. 1: A Monthly Record of Anthropological Science; Nos. 1-153 The new edition of The Making of Religion does not call for a lengthened notice in these pages. It is true that the revolutionary theory contained in the second part of the work has never yet been fully discussed. But to do so would require nearly as much space as the original occupies. On the other hand, the question raised by the earlier half of the book as to the validity and import of certain phenomena, vulgarly called spiritualistic, is hardly one for the Anthropological Institute.
