One appeared in the "New Quarterly," one in "Macmillan's," and the rest in the "Cornhill Magazine." To the "Cornhill" I owe a double debt of thanks; first, that I was received there in the very best society, and under the eye of the very best of editors; and second, that the proprietors have allowed me to republish so considerable an amount of copy. These nine worthies have been brought together from many different ages and countries. Not the most erudite of men could be perfectly prepared to deal with so many and such various sides of human life and manners. To pass a true judgment upon Knox and Burns implies a grasp upon the very deepest strain of thought in Scotland - a country far more essentially different from England than many parts of America; for, in a sense, the first of these men re-created Scotland, and the second is its most essentially national production. To treat fitly of Hugo and Villon would involve yet wider knowledge, not only of a country foreign to the author by race, history, and religion, but of the growth and liberties of art. Of the two Americans, Whitman and Thoreau, each is the type of something not so much realized as widely sought after among the late generations of their countrymen; and to see them clearly in a nice relation to the society that brought them forth, an author would require a large habit of life among modern Americans. As for Yoshida, I have already disclaimed responsibility; it was but my hand that held the pen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Familiar Studies of Men and Books: large print By Robert Louis Stevenson Familiar Studies of Men and Books By Robert Louis Stevenson On two most important points, Dr. Japp added to my knowledge, and with the same blow fairly demolished that part of my criticism. First, if Thoreau were content to dwell by Walden Pond, it was not merely with designs of selfimprovement, but to serve mankind in the highest sense. Book The Travels and Essays of Robert Louis Stevenson

Download or read book The Travels and Essays of Robert Louis Stevenson written by Robert Louis Stevenson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Travels and Essays of Robert Louis Stevenson: Familiar Studies of Men and Books, Miscellaneous Papers In truth, these are but the readings of a literary va grant. One book led to another, one study to another. The first was published with trepidation. Since no bones were broken, the second was launched with greater confidence. So, by insensible degrees, a young man of our generation acquires, in his own eyes, a kind of roving judicial commission through the ages; and, having once escaped the perils of the Freemans and the Furnivalls, sets himself up to right the wrongs of uni versal history and criticism. Now, it is one thing to write with enjoyment on a subject while the story is hot in your mind from recent reading, coloured with recent prejudice; and it is quite another business to put these writings coldly forth again in a bound volume. We are most of us attached to our Opinions; that is one of the natural affections of which we hear so much in youth; but few of us are altogether free from paralysing doubts and scruples. For my part, I have a small idea of the degree of accuracy possible to man, and I feel sure these studies teem with error. One and all were writ ten with genuine interest in the subject; many, how ever, have been conceived and finished with imperfect knowledge; and all have lain, from beginning to end, under the disadvantages inherent in this style of writing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'Familiar Studies of Men and Books', Robert Louis Stevenson offers a compelling collection of literary and critical essays that showcase his insightful and engaging writing style. This volume, which he describes as "the readings of a literary vagrant," brings to life a range of literary figures such as Victor Hugo, Charles of Orleans, Robert Burns, and Walt Whitman, addressing their works from the standpoint of an engaged reader rather than a scholarly critic. Stevenson combines moral and aesthetic assessments of these writers, often creating novelistic characterizations that bring them to life. This collection offers a fascinating glimpse into the mind of one of the greatest writers of the 19th century, and will appeal to anyone interested in literature and criticism.

Download or read book Familiar Studies Of Men And Books written by Robert Louis Stevenson and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2014-01-21 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the nine essays collected in this volume, seven had appeared in the ' Cornhill Magazine. ' The whole set range in date from 1874 to 1881, and thus belong to the period of Stevenson's life during which the papers in Virginibus Puerisque were written. The ' familiar studies ' are Victor Hugo's Romances, Some Aspects Of Robert Burns, Walt Whitman, Henry David Thoreau, Yoshido Torajiro, François Villon, Charles of Orleans, Samuel Pepys, and John Knox and Women. In arranging them for republication R. L. S. prefaced them by some notes of self-criticism, in which he is at much pains to show where, as he thought, he had accorded less than full justice to his subjects.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from "Virginibus Puerisque" And Other Papers; Memories and Portraits; Familiar Studies of Men and Books We are all busy in this world building Towers of Babel; and the child of our imaginations is always a Changeling when it comes from nurse. This is not only true in the greatest, as of wars and folios, but in the least also, like the trifling volume in your hand. Thus I began to write these papers with a defi nite end: I was to be the Advocatus, not I hope Diaboli, but Juventutis, ' I was to state temperately the beliefs of youth as Opposed to the contentions of age; to go over all the field where the two differ, and produce at last a little volume of special pleadings, which I might call, without misnomer, Life at Twenty five. But times kept changing, and I shared in the change. I clung hard to that entrancing age; but, with the best will, no man can be twenty-five forever. The old, ruddy convictions deserted me, and, along with them, the style that fits their presentation and defence. I saw, and indeed my friends in formed me, that the game was up. A good part Of the volume would answer to the long-projected title; but the shadows Of the prison-house are on the rest.
