Book excerpt: Excerpt from London Birds and Beasts The reader of the following pages will doubtless remind the writer of the present lines that good wine needs no bush. As, however, the authorship of the articles from the Saturday Review was only known to a few friends and acquaintances, it appeared desirable that they should be prefaced in the book form by someone interested in the matters of which they treat, and, as so many of them relate/ to the animals at the Zoological Society's Gardens, I was asked by the author's friends to say a few words by way of an intro duction to these essays of Mr. Tristram-valentine. Download or read book The Birds of London Classic Reprint written by H. K. Swann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of London A few words upon the various localities mentioned in the following pages may, perhaps, not be out of place here, especially as such a small proportion of Lon doners are at all well acquainted with the said locali ties, and even those that are will probably pardon me this slight digression. To begin then in the east, the farthest point mentioned is Dagenham Lake. This is situated some four miles beyond Barking and on the north side of the Thames, with which it was until re cently connected. It is a deep and clear sheet of water, and is fully a mile in length by perhaps one sixth of a mile in breadth at the widest part. The edge of the water is fringed with dense beds of reeds and sedges, forming a cover for water-fowl, which, however, are not abundant, owing no doubt to the lake being so much frequented by fishermen and gunners. Nevertheless, in the early morning, particu larly in the latter part of the year, a few wild ducks of several species may be seen, while the wary and artful moor-hen is always about. In the beds of reeds, viii introduction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nests and Eggs of Familiar British Birds, Described and Illustrated: With an Account of the Haunts and Habits of the Feathered Architects, and Their Times and Modes of Building Ir may at first strike our young readers that this is a question very easily answered; if they think so, let them try What sort of an answer they can give to it, and if they break down in the definition, we will endeavour to help them, as we are told in the old fable, Jupiter did the waggoner; but it is best for young people to try, and, for that matter, old people too; let them never believe that they can't do a thing - where there's a will there's a way. Many a boy that will take a deal of pains, and incur no inconsiderable risk of life and limb, to climb up a tree after a bird's nest, finds it too much trouble to read and learn about the habits of the creature he is thus ready to deprive of its warm comfortable home and beautiful eggs. He cannot tell you, if you ask him, of What the nest is composed, nor how, nor when it was built, much less can he answer the question which we have just put to our readers. Download or read book Lost British Birds Classic Reprint written by W. H. Hudson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lost British Birds At the present day the crane is a rare visitor-a lost wanderer from happier realms. The resonant, far-sounding cry of this noble bird - one of the most fascinating sounds of wild nature, especially when several individuals, as their custom is, unite their voices in a chorus - will probably never be heard again in England, except from captives in an en closure. With the crane's figure we are perhaps more familiar than with that of any other large species, and will be so as long as we continue to import decorative hangings, screens and pictures by the million from Japan. To that artistic people the crane is pre-eminent among birds for its beauty and stately grace as is the Chrysanthemum among flowers. Book Our Birds and Their Nestlings Classic Reprint

Download or read book Our Birds and Their Nestlings Classic Reprint written by Margaret Coulson Walker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Birds and Their Nestlings Since permanent interest in any subject cannot be awakened through occasional lessons, it is believed that much profit will come from a few weeks' continuous read ing along a single line, - reading which will create a love for the beautiful through understanding. Ignorance closes the door to much of our best' literature, which can be interpreted only through a sympathetic familiarity with nature. Color, sound, and movement are always attractive to childhood, and nowhere can they be found in such pleas ing combination as in the bird world. The study of its busy little inhabitants in their natural environment will not only add pleasure to the walks of the child, but will help him to a knowledge of the adaptation of all life to its surroundings. It will also lead to the intelligent appreciation of litera ture and music. Since the birth of time the birds have inspired poets and musicians. They have also given the keenest pleas ure to countless thousands who have never attempted to express what they felt. To interest a child in these guests of our groves, - these feathered entertainers who are also workers in our fields and orchards, - is to put him in possession of a wellspring of interest as enduring as life itself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ready Guide to British Birds As the result of long experience the author has cc me to the conclusion that there is a need for a guide to British Birds at once more simple and more ready than any yet published. After various experiments the plan adopted in this book was decided upon, viz. First to arrange the descriptions so that in the case of each bird the same characteristics (colour, ight, haunts, &c.) always follow one another in the same order and then to divide the descriptions into vertical columns, so that the Observer can, by looking down any one column, run through the different descriptions of any particular feature until he comes to one which corresponds tty what he has observed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Birds: A Simple and Popular Classification, of the Birds of the World Dr. Mitchell's multifarious duties have put a stop to further joint undertaking, but I hereby wish to acknowledge my great indebtedness to him for his assistance, and to express my belief that whatever merits the present work may be found to possess, they would have been much greater had he been my coadjutor throughout. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of Britain Every one feels more or less interested in Birds, whether it be from pure affection for the Robins and Tits which beg our hospitality during the winter months, or joy at the coming of the Swallow and Cuckoo as heralds of spring. For some the interest is perhaps merely a passing regret at the shooting of one of our rare and beautiful migrants, while with others the real love of bird life makes it a moment of intensest pleasure when, for instance, the melodious note of the Nightingale makes us dimly realise something of the innate beauty of Nature herself.
