Book excerpt: "Hogg left a written record of three of his many journeys to the Highlands, those of 1802, 1803 and 1804, and in Highland Journeys he offers a thoughtful and deeply-felt response to the Highland Clearances. He gives vivid pictures of his experiences, including a narrow escape from a Navy press-gang, and a Sacrament day with one minister preaching in English and another in Gaelic. Hogg also explains aspects of Gaelic culture such as the waulking songs, and he describes the trade in kelp, lucrative to the landowners but back-breaking and ill-paid for the workers. Highland Journeys makes a refreshing contribution to our understanding of early nineteenth-century travel writing"--Publisher description.

Book Sir Walter Scott Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sir Walter Scott Classic Reprint written by Richard Holt Hutton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sir Walter Scott Life of Sir Walter Scott, in ten volumes. N o introduction to Scott would be worth much in which that course was not followed. Indeed, excepting Sir Walter's own writ ings, there is hardly any other great source of information about him; and that is so full, that hardly anything need ful to illustrate the subject of Scott's life remains un touched. As regards the only matters of controversy, Scott's relations to the Ballantynes, I have taken care to check Mr. Lockhart's statements by reading those of the representatives of the Ballantyne brothers; but with this exception, Sir Walter's own works and Lockhart's life of him are the great authorities concerning his character and his story. At Christmas, 1799, he received the appointment of sheriff-depute of Selkirkshire, with a salary of 300 a year; and this possession of an income which, though moderate, was settled and permanent, was especially welcome as placing him in a position of pecuniary ease, which made him to a certain extent independent, and left him at liberty to indulge his literary taste, in pre ference to wasting his talents on the daily drudgery of a precarious profession. From the first it had never jumped with his inclination, and it had failed to grow on him. His feelings towards it be compared to those avowed by Slender to Miss Anne Page There was no great love between us at the beginning; and it pleased Heaven to decrease it on further acquaintance. Book Domestic Manners and Private Life of Sir Walter Scott Classic Reprint

Download or read book Domestic Manners and Private Life of Sir Walter Scott Classic Reprint written by James Hogg and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Domestic Manners and Private Life of Sir Walter Scott The Ettrick Shepherd's "Familiar Anecdotes of Sir Walter Scott," as this little work has sometimes been named, calls for no apologetic preface upon its republication. The book throws so much light upon the social and more homely side of the Great Novelist's character, and, at the same time, reveals in so amusing a fashion the foibles and egotism of the worthy and justly celebrated "Shepherd," that it has always been exceedingly popular. In recent years, however, the volume has become so scarce that copies have been only obtainable at a very high price. The publisher therefore hopes that the present edition will enable those who love a good book in a good form, and who desire to possess the brief but interesting sketch, to add it to their stores. This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Sir Walter Scott, Vol. 5 However this may have been, Scott's answer to Mr. Train proceeded in these words I am now to solicit a favour, which I think your interest in Scottish antiquities will induce you readily to comply with. I am very desirous to have some account of the present state of Turnberry Castle - whether any vestiges of it remain - what is the appearance of the ground - the names of the neighbouring places - and above all, what are the traditions of the place (if any) concerning its memorable surprise by Bruce, upon his return from the coast of Ireland, in the commencement of the brilliant part of his career. The purpose of this is to furnish some hints for notes to a work in which I am now engaged, and I need not say I will have great pleasure in mention ing the source from which I derive my information. I have only to add, with the modest importunity of a lazy correspondent, that the sooner you oblige me with an answer (if you can assist me on the subject), the greater will the obligation be on me. He was, as I have been informed by a lady who chanced to live near him, a remarkably active and dauntless boy full of all manner of fun, and ready for all manner of mischief. Hunne well, published since I began this work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Sir Walter Scott, Vol. 10 Miss Fergusson was on her deathbed; and thus, when my wife and I were obliged to move south wards at the beginning of winter, Sir Walter was left almost entirely dependent on his daughter Anne, William Laidlaw, and the worthy domestics whom I have been naming. Mr. Laidlaw attended him occasionally as amanuensis when his fingers were chilblained, and often dined as well as break fasted with him; and Miss Scott well knew that in all circumstances she might lean to Laidlaw with the confidence of a niece or a daughter. Download or read book Domestic Manners of Sir Walter Scott Classic Reprint written by James Hogg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-12 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Domestic Manners of Sir Walter Scott There is, however, another side to this picture. While to one who in the height of summer drives along the beautiful tree-sheltered road that follows the course of the Yarrow or the Ettrick everything presents visions of quiet loveliness, verdant holms embraced by softly murmuring streams, and shaded by full-foliaged trees, further up both valleys become much barer. This bleakness and bareness were more pronounced less than a century ago. Washington Irving, who visited Sir Walter Scott in the month of August, 1816, and was taken by him to some height which commanded an extensive prospect, tells how his host pointed out place after place famous in Border legend or poetry. While Sir Walter was going on with his localisation of poetic memories, Irving confesses: I gazed about me with mute surprise; I may say disappointment. I beheld a mere succession of grey waving hills, line beyond line as far as my eye could reach, monotonous in their aspect, and so destitute of trees that one could almost see a stout fly walking along their profile; and the far-famed Tweed appeared a naked stream flowing between hills, without a tree or a thicket on its banks.
