Book excerpt: The present investigation examined characteristic, symptomatic, and familial predictors of long-term symptom severity of eating disorders. The purpose of the study was to determine if, after accounting for a number of known predictors of outcome, familial variables explained a significant amount of additional variance in disordered eating and general well-being scores measured at post-treatment follow-up. The sample included 398 women, ages 13 to 56, who had completed eating disorder treatment at an inpatient facility. Hierarchal multiple regression analysis demonstrated that familial predictors at admission to treatment did significantly predict long-term outcomes, while changes from admission to treatment in symptoms and perceptions of parents did not predict recovery. Patients' relationships with their fathers significantly contributed to the regression model. Recommendations for future investigations are discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the transdiagnostic response of adolescents with a broad range of eating disorders to family-based treatment (FBT) and to explore transdiagnostic predictors of outcome. Our transdiagnostic sample (N=56) derived from two randomized clinical trials: one comparing short- to long-term FBT for adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN) and one comparing FBT to supportive psychotherapy for adolescent bulimia nervosa (BN). Eating-related symptomatology was measured using the Eating Disorder Examination (EDE). Categorical outcome was broadly defined using a combination of established thresholds for full and partial remission, and continuous outcome was defined using change in physical, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms over the course of treatment. Participants with full or partial AN showed better response to FBT than participants with full or partial BN. No transdiagnostic predictors of full remission were found. Being an ethnic minority predicted partial remission. The presence of comorbid mental illness, longer illness duration, greater global EDE score, greater EDE subscale scores, and more binge-eating or purging episodes at baseline predicted no remission. Participants in the AN group were more likely to achieve continuous remission. Results suggest that FBT is more effective for purely restrictive disorders than for those with binge-eating and purging behaviors. Nonetheless, adolescent patients treated with FBT respond to the approach.
