Book excerpt: This book covers the results of investigation of social realities and their public representation in Brazilian poor communities, with a particular emphasis on the use of cultural tools to survive and create psychological and social novelty under conditions of severe poverty. A relevant part of it brings together the multi-faceted evidence of a decade of research concentrated in two particular low-income areas in the city of Salvador da Bahia, Brazil. Other studies conducted in other Brazilian areas and in Cali, Colombia are included. In contrast to most representations of poverty in the social sciences which create a “calamity story” of the lives of poor people, the coverage in this book is meant to balance the focus on harsh realities with the cultural-psychological resiliency of individuals and families under poverty.

Download or read book Introducci n al asesoramiento pastoral de la familia AETH written by Jorge E. Maldonado and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2004-05-01 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Gesti n del patrimonio familiar written by Borja Durán and published by Editorial Almuzara. This book was released on 2013-04 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Routledge Handbook of Arts and Global Development

Download or read book Routledge Handbook of Arts and Global Development written by Vicki-Ann Ware and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-29 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a leading team of international experts in arts and global development to showcase effective practice and to explore how this vibrant interdisciplinary field has developed and what the latest research can teach us. Although arts play a central role in human development, and in the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities, few have attempted to comprehensively explore arts practice as global development. This Handbook first provides a theoretical framework for exploring arts and global development, before surveying a comprehensive range of art forms and development practices to explore the potential of the arts to strategically and beneficially contribute to more just and equitable conditions for communities across the globe. Stretching across the arts from theatre, dance, and music to poetry, film, and visual arts, the book covers topics as diverse as health, education, peacebuilding, livelihoods, sustainability, activism, and arts as research method in programming. The Handbook also identifies gaps in the literature, pointing towards the most pressing and promising avenues for further research over the next few years. This book will be an essential resource for any researcher, student, or practitioner wishing to understand the role of the arts in global development and in the global south more generally.

Book A History of Family Planning in Twentieth Century Peru

Download or read book A History of Family Planning in Twentieth Century Peru written by Raúl Necochea López and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2014-10-15 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adding to the burgeoning study of medicine and science in Latin America, this important book offers a comprehensive historical perspective on the highly contentious issues of sexual and reproductive health in an important Andean nation. Raul Necochea Lopez approaches family planning as a historical phenomenon layered with medical, social, economic, and moral implications. At stake in this complex mix were new notions of individual autonomy, the future of gender relations, and national prosperity. The implementation of Peru's first family planning programs led to a rapid professionalization of fertility control. Complicating the evolution of associated medical services were the conflicting agendas of ordinary citizens, power brokers from governmental and military sectors, clergy, and international health groups. While family planning promised a greater degree of control over individuals' intimate lives, as well as opportunities for economic improvement through the effective management of birth rates, the success of attempts to regulate fertility was far from assured. Today, Necochea Lopez observes, although the quality of family planning resources in Peru has improved, services remain far from equitably available.
