Book Biography of Conan O Brien

Download or read book Biography of Conan O Brien written by John Kim and published by Hyperink Inc. This book was released on 2012-02-12 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK Long considered a fixture of late-night television in America, Conan O'Brien has managed to captivate millions of viewers with his active and spontaneous hosting style, which has been characterized as “awkward, self-deprecating humor.” Conan O’Brien has been transformed from the high school student newspaper editor to the optimistic Harvard grad who headed out west in search for writing gigs in the entertainment industry, and finally to the public figure who was able to effectively leverage his writing talents to become a TV show host who easily connects to the audiences both on stage and at home. MEET THE AUTHOR John currently resides in San Francisco and has three years of experience in the medical device industry as well as over a year of academic research experience at Stanford University. He holds a BS in Biomedical Engineering from University of Southern California. John is currently a graduate student at Johns Hopkins University studying for a MS in Biotechnology on a remote basis. He follows very closely the recent developments in the venture capital arena, as he is an aspiring entrepreneur himself. In his spare time, he enjoys working out at the gym as well as playing basketball. John also loves to travel around the world every chance he can get. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Conan O’Brien’s road to fame began gradually after working for several years as a TV writer and moving on to become a TV show host. While on a writers’ strike from Saturday Night Live following the 1987-88 season, O'Brien put on an improvisational comedy revue called Happy Happy Good Show with fellow SNL writers Bob Odenkirk and Robert Smigel in Chicago. In 1989, O'Brien and other SNL writers received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy or Variety Series. Moreover, O'Brien occasionally appeared as an extra in sketches, like many SNL writers. Among his most notable appearances was as a doorman in a sketch in which Tom Hanks was inducted into the SNL “Five-Timers Club” for hosting his fifth episode. Another important milestone of O’Brien’s career was his stint as a writer and producer for The Simpsons from 1991 to 1993. He was an active producer during seasons 4 and 5 (1992-93), as he would frequently contribute to scripts as well as come up with story ideas, plot points, and jokes. The style of the show's comedy during this period was also influenced by his sensibilities; for example, the episode “Marge vs. the Monorail” was cited by several former writers as the turning point in the show's history where more absurd and visual comedy became acceptable. In his Harvard Class Day speech, O’Brien credited The Simpsons with pulling him out of his career slump Buy a copy to keep reading!

Book Fame The Hijacking of Reality

Download or read book Fame The Hijacking of Reality written by Justine Bateman and published by Akashic Books. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Wholly riveting." --New York Times Book Review "Justine Bateman was famous before selfies replaced autographs, and bags of fan mail gave way to Twitter shitstorms. And here's the good news: she took notes along the way. Justine steps through the looking glass of her own celebrity, shatters it, and pieces together, beyond the shards and splinters, a reflection of her true self. The transformation is breathtaking. Revelatory and raucous, fascinating and frightening, Fame is a hell of a ride." --Michael J. Fox, actor, author of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Future "In a new book, Fame: The Hijacking of Reality, the two-time Emmy nominee takes a raw look at the culture of celebrity, reflecting on her stardom at its dizzying peak--and the 'disconcerting' feeling as it began to fade." --People Magazine A Book Soup (Los Angeles, CA) best seller, October 15–21, 2018 "As the title Fame: The Hijacking of Reality more than implies, this is a book about the complicated aspects of all things fame." --Vanity Fair "Bateman digs into the out-of-control nature of being famous, its psychological aftermath and why we all can't get enough of it." --New York Post "The Family Ties alum has written the rawest, bleakest book on fame you're ever likely to read. Bateman's close-up of the celeb experience features vivid encounters with misogyny, painful meditations on aging in Hollywood, and no shortage of theses on social media's wrath." --Entertainment Weekly "Bateman addresses the reader directly, pouring out her thoughts in a rapid-fire, conversational style. (Hunter S. Thompson is saluted in the acknowledgments.)...But her jittery delivery suits the material--the manic sugar high of celebrity and its inevitable crash. Bateman takes the reader through her entire fame cycle, from TV megastar, whose first movie role was alongside Julia Roberts, to her quieter life today as a filmmaker. She is as relentless with herself as she is with others." --Washington Post "While Bateman's new book Fame: The Hijacking of Reality (out now) touches on the former teen starlet's experience in the public eye, it's not a memoir. Far from it, in fact--it's instead an intense meditation on the nature of fame, and a glimpse into the repercussions it has on both the individual experiencing it and the society that keeps the concept alive." --Entertainment Weekly "Bateman takes an unsentimental look at the nature of celebrity worship in her first book, Fame: The Hijacking of Reality." --LA Weekly Entertainment shows, magazines, websites, and other channels continuously report the latest sightings, heartbreaks, and triumphs of the famous to a seemingly insatiable public. Millions of people go to enormous lengths to achieve Fame. Fame is woven into our lives in ways that may have been unimaginable in years past. And yet, is Fame even real? Contrary to tangible realities, Fame is one of those "realities" that we, as a society, have made. Why is that and what is it about Fame that drives us to spend so much time, money, and focus to create the framework that maintains its health? Mining decades of experience, writer, director, producer, and actress Justine Bateman writes a visceral, intimate look at the experience of Fame. Combining the internal reality-shift of the famous, theories on the public's behavior at each stage of a famous person's career, and the experiences of other famous performers, Bateman takes the reader inside and outside the emotions of Fame. The book includes twenty-four color photographs to highlight her analysis.

Book The War for Late Night

Download or read book The War for Late Night written by Bill Carter and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2010-11-04 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bill Carter, executive producer of CNN’s docuseries The Story of Late Night and host of the Behind the Desk: Story of Late Night podcast, details the chaotic transition of The Tonight Show from host Jay Leno to Conan O’Brien—and back again. In 2010, NBC’s CEO Jeff Zucker, had it all worked out when he moved Jay Leno from behind the desk at The Tonight Show, and handed the reins over to Conan O'Brien. But his decision was a spectacular failure. Ratings plummeted, affiliates were enraged—and when Zucker tried to put everything back the way it was, that plan backfired as well. No one is more uniquely suited to document the story of a late-night travesty than veteran media reporter and bestselling author, Bill Carter. In candid detail, he charts the vortex that sucked in not just Leno and O'Brien—but also Letterman, Stewart, Fallon, Kimmel, and Ferguson—as frantic agents and network executives tried to manage a tectonic shift in television’s most beloved institution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by Virginia Grohl, the mother of Dave Grohl—former Nirvana drummer and current frontman for the Foo Fighters—From Cradle to Stage shares stories and exclusive photos featuring mothers of rock icons, the icons themselves, and their Behind the Music-style relationships While the Grohl family had always been musical-the family sang together on long car trips, harmonizing to Motown and David Bowie-Virginia never expected her son to become a musician, let alone a rock star. But when she saw him perform in front of thousands of screaming fans for the first time, she knew that rock stardom was meant to be for her son. And as Virginia watched her son's star rise, she often wondered about the other mothers who raised sons and daughters who became rock stars. Were they as surprised as she was about their children's fame? Did they worry about their children's livelihood and wellbeing in an industry fraught with drugs and other dangers? Did they encourage their children's passions despite the odds against success, or attempt to dissuade them from their grandiose dreams? Do they remind their kids to pack a warm coat when they go on tour? Virginia decided to seek out other rock star mothers to ask these questions, and so began a two-year odyssey in which she interviewed such women as Verna Griffin, Dr. Dre's mother; Marianne Stipe, Michael Stipe of REM's mother; Janis Winehouse, Amy Winehouse's mother; Patsy Noah, Adam Levine's mother; Donna Haim, mother of the Haim sisters; Hester Diamond, Mike D of The Beastie Boys' mother. With exclusive family photographs and a foreword by Dave Grohl, From Cradle to Stage will appeal to mothers and rock fans everywhere.
