Book False Prophets and Preachers

Download or read book False Prophets and Preachers written by and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In February 1534, a radical group of Anabaptists, gripped with apocalyptic fervor, seized the city of Münster and established an idealistic communal government that quickly deteriorated into extreme inequality and theocratic totalitarianism. In response, troops hired by the city's prince-bishop laid siege to the city. Fifteen months later the besieged inhabitants were starving, and, in the dead of the night, five men slipped out. Separated from his fellow escapees, Henry Gresbeck gambled with his life by approaching enemy troops. Taken prisoner, he collaborated with the enemy to devise a plan to recapture Münster, and later recorded the only eyewitness account of the Anabaptist kingdom of Münster. Gresbeck's account, which attempts to explain his role in the bizarre events, disappeared into the archives and was largely ignored for centuries. Before now, Gresbeck's account was only available in a heavily edited German copy adapted from inferior manuscripts. Christopher S. Mackay, who previously produced the only modern translation of the main Latin account of these events, has adhered closely to Gresbeck’s own words to produce the first complete and accurate English translation of this important primary source.

Book False Prophets and Their Blind Followers

Download or read book False Prophets and Their Blind Followers written by Pastor Kamthian Vaiphei and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this brief treatise, the authors attempt to describe modern false prophets in the light of God's Word. The so-called evangelical but unbiblical messages are also clearly exposed. Instead of recognizing false prophets and preachers for what they are by their evil fruits (Matthew 7:16), some think highly of them. They assume they are genuine and blindly follow them without questioning their credibility. Jesus called them "ravenous wolves in sheep's clothing" (Matthew 7:15). The Apostle Paul calls them "deceitful workers transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ" (2 Corinthians 11:13). The only way to identify such is through their evil fruits which cannot escape the notice of spiritually discerning eyes of those who are truly converted and have God's Holy Spirit dwelling in them. Jesus' call to beware of false prophets based on their evil fruits is redundant if we choose to remain careless by tolerating in our midst such false prophets claiming to be God's anointed servants. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Believers know that when we die we enter heaven and will spend eternity there with God and the saints who have gone before us. But what actually happens in heaven? What are we going to be doing there? Won't it get boring at some point? According to Scripture, a large part of our experience of heaven will be a continual revealing of God's glory. Not just his glory in the moment, but during all of time. The mysteries of providence, the hidden movements of God throughout history, and the forgotten and unnoted works of even the most obscure of God's people will be unveiled so that we can see how wise, loving, gracious, and powerful our God is. And though we will experience perfection in heaven, we will never be omniscient, which means we will always be learning more about God's glory, inspiring us to return joyful praise and thanksgiving. If your vision of heaven has been limited to clouds and harps and angels, it's time to expand that view with the truth found in this biblically based look at the afterlife.

Book Quivering Families

    Book Details:
  • Author : Emily Hunter McGowin
  • Publisher : Fortress Press
  • Release : 2018-05-01
  • ISBN : 1506446604
  • Pages : 295 pages

Download or read book Quivering Families written by Emily Hunter McGowin and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American evangelicals are known for focusing on the family, but the Quiverfull movement intensifies that focus in a significant way. Often called "Quiverfull" due to an emphasis on filling their "quivers" with as many children as possible (Psalm 127:5), such families are distinguishable by their practices of male-only leadership, homeschooling, and prolific childbirth. Their primary aim is "multigenerational faithfulness" - ensuring their descendants maintain Christian faith for many generations. Many believe this focus will lead to the Christianization of America in the centuries to come. Quivering Families is a first of its kind project that employs history, ethnography, and theology to explore the Quiverfull movement in America. The book considers a study of the movement's origins, its major leaders and institutions, and the daily lives of its families. Quivering Families argues that despite the apparent strangeness of their practice, Quiverfull is a thoroughly evangelical and American phenomenon. Far from offering a countercultural vision of the family, Quiverfull represents an intensification of longstanding tendencies. The movement reveals the weakness of evangelical theology of the family and underlines the need for more critical and creative approaches.

Book American Messiahs False Prophets of a Damned Nation

Download or read book American Messiahs False Prophets of a Damned Nation written by Adam Morris and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history with sweeping implications, American Messiahs challenges our previous misconceptions about “cult” leaders and their messianic power. Mania surrounding messianic prophets has defined the national consciousness since the American Revolution. From Civil War veteran and virulent anticapitalist Cyrus Teed, to the dapper and overlooked civil rights pioneer Father Divine, to even the megalomaniacal Jim Jones, these figures have routinely been dismissed as dangerous and hysterical outliers. After years of studying these emblematic figures, Adam Morris demonstrates that messiahs are not just a classic trope of our national culture; their visions are essential for understanding American history. As Morris demonstrates, these charismatic, if flawed, would-be prophets sought to expose and ameliorate deep social ills—such as income inequality, gender conformity, and racial injustice. Provocative and long overdue, this is the story of those who tried to point the way toward an impossible “American Dream”: men and women who momentarily captured the imagination of a nation always searching for salvation.

She explains that as a sign for the end times, deception is on the riseeven in the churches. Deception is no longer dark for you to be able to distinguish easily. It appears just as written in 2 Corinthians 11: 13-14 "For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light" (NKJV). It is now very difficult to tell the difference between righteous and unrighteous, good and evil, clean and unclean, holy and unholy, and sacred and secular. The false prophets select the parts of the scripture that will support their philosophical and psychological intentions, and deceive many into thinking that they are real. It is time for men and women to guide themselves with the spirit of discernment. This book reveals what to watch for so that you do not fall into their traps. They generally do not preach salvation. Book Karlstadt and the Origins of the Eucharistic Controversy

Download or read book Karlstadt and the Origins of the Eucharistic Controversy written by Amy Nelson Burnett and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-24 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debate over the Lord's Supper had momentous consequences for the Reformation, causing the division of the evangelical movement, influencing the formation of political alliances, and contributing to cultural differences among the Protestant territories of Germany and Switzerland. Karlstadt and the Origins of the Eucharistic Controversy is the first full-length study of the beginning of that debate. Going beyond the traditional focus on Martin Luther and Ulrich Zwingli, it emphasizes the diversity of the "sacramentarian" challenge to traditional belief in Christ's corporeal presence in the bread and wine of the Eucharist, and it re-evaluates the significance of Luther's colleague, Andreas Bodenstein von Karlstadt, for the debate. Burnett describes Luther's earliest criticisms of the mass and the efforts in Wittenberg to reform liturgical praxis to correspond with his ideas. She then looks at pamphlets written by other reformers to show how Luther's understanding of the sacrament was adapted and modified outside of Wittenberg. Ultimately, Burnett shows how Karlstadt's eucharistic pamphlets introduced into the public debate arguments that would become standard Reformed criticisms of the Lutheran position. The book also demonstrates the influence not only of Erasmus but also of John Wyclif and the Hussites for discussions of the sacrament, highlights the role of the reformers of Basel and Strasbourg for developing the "Zwinglian" understanding of the Lord's Supper, and draws attention to the early eucharistic theology of the Silesians Kaspar Schwenckfeld and Valentin Krautwald. This book will be an indispensable guide for readers seeking to understand the issues surrounding the outbreak of the eucharistic controversy in the sixteenth century.
