Book excerpt: Vespasian's mission will lead to violence, mayhem, and theft—and in the end, to a betrayal so great it will echo through the ages Vespasian is serving as a military officer on the outskirts of the Roman Empire, suppressing local troubles and defending the Roman way. But political events in Rome—Tiberius's increasingly insane debauchery, the escalating grain crisis—draw him back to the city. When Caligula becomes Emperor, Vespasian believes that things will improve. Instead, he watches the young emperor deteriorate from Rome's shining star to a blood-crazed, incestuous, all-powerful madman. Lavish building projects, endless games, public displays of his relationship with his sister, Drusilla, and a terrified senate are as nothing to Caligula's most ambitious plan: to bridge the bay of Neapolis and ride over it wearing Alexander's breastplate. And it falls to Vespasian to travel to Alexandria and steal it from Alexander's mausoleum.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War breaks out in Heaven when the Lord God Almighty makes a bold attempt to seize control of the Roman Empire and launches military strikes against Jupiter, Supreme God of Ancient Rome...The puritanical Lord God has become an angry, bitter demagogue after discovering that divine power comes not from within but from the degree of humanity's popular worship. God's strict laws and His newly composed Bible have united His people giving Him the required strength to attack Rome. He is a populist tyrant ruling with an iron fist, and with a determination to obliterate all rivals He has declared the Roman Pantheon to be 'false gods'.In contrast the Roman Republic, ruled by the liberal-minded, pluralistic Jupiter, is steeped in sensuality and self-indulgence. It allows myriad gods, spirits and supernatural entities to be accepted and worshipped. Scientific investigation, art, and philosophy are actively encouraged. Rather than control their followers the Roman gods embrace them with hedonistic love and are idolised like rock stars.God and his angels attack Jupiter at his most vulnerable moment - unprotected by his armies, stimulated by exotic substances, and surrounded only by the decadent carnality of fantasy spirits. The Lord God comes within an ace of destroying Jupiter when he is momentarily distracted by the divine sensuality of Venus, Goddess of Love and Desire. Jupiter calls on the mightiest Roman gods for assistance - Mars, Ceres, Apollo, Minerva, Diana, Vulcan, Bacchus... The Romans manage to repel God's attack but then Mercury, Messenger of the Gods, brings news of the fall of Hades. The general of God's army of angels, Satan, has captured the Underworld with the aid of the ancient weapon known as the Devil's Trident. Satan has unleashed the fires of Hell and has taken Jupiter's brother Pluto prisoner...

Reward her even as she has rewarded you and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double. How much she hath glorified herself and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: For she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow. Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: For strong is the LORD God who judgeth her..." (Revelation 18:4-8)

After eight years of resistance, the British warrior Caratacus has been caught. But even Vespasian's victory cannot remove the newly-made consul from Roman politics: Agrippina, Emperor Claudius's wife, pardons Caratacus. Claudius is a drunken fool and Narcissus and Pallas, his freedmen, are battling for control of his throne. Separately, they decide to send Vespasian East to Armenia to defend Rome's interests. But there is more at stake than protecting a client kingdom. Rumors abound that Agrippina is involved in a plot to destabilise the East. Vespasian must find a way to serve two masters—Narcissus is determined to ruin Agrippina, Pallas to save her. Meanwhile, the East is in turmoil. A new Jewish cult is flourishing and its adherents refuse to swear loyalty to the Emperor. In Armenia, Vespasian is captured. Immured in the oldest city on earth, how can he escape? And is a Rome ruled by a woman who despises Vespasian any safer than a prison cell?

Book Battling the Gods

  • Author : Tim Whitmarsh
  • Publisher : Vintage
  • Release : 2015-11-10
  • ISBN : 0307958337
  • Pages : 306 pages

Download or read book Battling the Gods written by Tim Whitmarsh and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2015-11-10 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How new is atheism? Although adherents and opponents alike today present it as an invention of the European Enlightenment, when the forces of science and secularism broadly challenged those of faith, disbelief in the gods, in fact, originated in a far more remote past. In Battling the Gods, Tim Whitmarsh journeys into the ancient Mediterranean, a world almost unimaginably different from our own, to recover the stories and voices of those who first refused the divinities. Homer’s epic poems of human striving, journeying, and passion were ancient Greece’s only “sacred texts,” but no ancient Greek thought twice about questioning or mocking his stories of the gods. Priests were functionaries rather than sources of moral or cosmological wisdom. The absence of centralized religious authority made for an extraordinary variety of perspectives on sacred matters, from the devotional to the atheos, or “godless.” Whitmarsh explores this kaleidoscopic range of ideas about the gods, focusing on the colorful individuals who challenged their existence. Among these were some of the greatest ancient poets and philosophers and writers, as well as the less well known: Diagoras of Melos, perhaps the first self-professed atheist; Democritus, the first materialist; Socrates, executed for rejecting the gods of the Athenian state; Epicurus and his followers, who thought gods could not intervene in human affairs; the brilliantly mischievous satirist Lucian of Samosata. Before the revolutions of late antiquity, which saw the scriptural religions of Christianity and Islam enforced by imperial might, there were few constraints on belief. Everything changed, however, in the millennium between the appearance of the Homeric poems and Christianity’s establishment as Rome’s state religion in the fourth century AD. As successive Greco-Roman empires grew in size and complexity, and power was increasingly concentrated in central capitals, states sought to impose collective religious adherence, first to cults devoted to individual rulers, and ultimately to monotheism. In this new world, there was no room for outright disbelief: the label “atheist” was used now to demonize anyone who merely disagreed with the orthodoxy—and so it would remain for centuries. As the twenty-first century shapes up into a time of mass information, but also, paradoxically, of collective amnesia concerning the tangled histories of religions, Whitmarsh provides a bracing antidote to our assumptions about the roots of freethinking. By shining a light on atheism’s first thousand years, Battling the Gods offers a timely reminder that nonbelief has a wealth of tradition of its own, and, indeed, its own heroes.
