Book Sustainable Intensification

Download or read book Sustainable Intensification written by Jules N. Pretty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continued population growth, rapidly changing consumption patterns and the impacts of climate change and environmental degradation are driving limited resources of food, energy, water and materials towards critical thresholds worldwide. These pressures are likely to be substantial across Africa, where countries will have to find innovative ways to boost crop and livestock production to avoid becoming more reliant on imports and food aid. Sustainable agricultural intensification - producing more output from the same area of land while reducing the negative environmental impacts - represents a solution for millions of African farmers. This volume presents the lessons learned from 40 sustainable agricultural intensification programmes in 20 countries across Africa, commissioned as part of the UK Government's Foresight project. Through detailed case studies, the authors of each chapter examine how to develop productive and sustainable agricultural systems and how to scale up these systems to reach many more millions of people in the future. Themes covered include crop improvements, agroforestry and soil conservation, conservation agriculture, integrated pest management, horticulture, livestock and fodder crops, aquaculture, and novel policies and partnerships.

Book Agriculture in Dry Lands

    Book Details:
  • Author : I. Arnon
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2012-12-02
  • ISBN : 0444599568
  • Pages : 992 pages

Download or read book Agriculture in Dry Lands written by I. Arnon and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 992 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, man has, by over-use, consistently reduced the productive capacity of dry lands. This degradation of one-third of the land area of the globe is, unfortunately, increasing. In recent years, world interest has turned to the problems of pollution of the environment and the impending food shortage as world population grows explosively. Thus the attention of international and other agricultural bodies has turned to the need for preserving and developing more effectively the agricultural potential of these areas. This book provides a comprehensive review of present knowledge of the agriculture of dry lands, with special emphasis on measures for conserving their natural resources. Management practices are described which aim at optimizing productivity of rainfed and irrigated agriculture without adverse effects on sustainability. Land use in the dry regions, and its evolution throughout history is described and analysed, and the lessons to be learnt from destructive technologies are stressed. In particular, current proposals for an alternative agriculture are discussed and their justification is questioned. This is a generalist work, which specialists can also find interesting, not only in their own discipline but as a concise way of acquainting themselves with the state-of-the-art in associated fields. Increasing specialisation with each discipline using its own vocabulary leads inevitably to communication problems, and the need for multi-disciplinary teams makes inter-discipline communication indispensible.

Book Agriculture and Environmental Challenges

Download or read book Agriculture and Environmental Challenges written by Jitendra Srivastava and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Symposium on environmentally sustainable agricultutal development.Twenty-seven specialists discuss policies and techniques for advancing agricultural development and protecting the environment. The discussions on agricultural management examine how the environment is affected by population growth, conservation tillage, moisture management, soil fertility, and biological nitrogen fertilization.Several strategies offer ways to raise the productivity of women farmers, target women for extension programs, and address fuel issues of special concern to women. The symposium also explores the relationship between poverty and agricultural resource management. Key topics include the effects of deforestation, conservation, and population growth on poverty and the ways in which supply-led credit could be used to rehabilitate the environment.

Book Soil Physical Measurement and Interpretation for Land Evaluation

Download or read book Soil Physical Measurement and Interpretation for Land Evaluation written by Keppel Coughlan and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2002-11-26 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil physical measurements are essential for solving many natural resource management problems. This operational laboratory and field handbook provides, for the first time, a standard set of methods that are cost-effective and well suited to land resource survey. It provides: *practical guidelines on the soil physical measurements across a range of soils, climates and land uses; *straightforward descriptions for each method (including common pitfalls) that can be applied by people with a rudimentary knowledge of soil physics, and *guidelines on the interpretation of results and integration with land resource assessment. Soil Physical Measurement And Interpretation for Land Evaluation begins with an introduction to land evaluation and then outlines procedures for field sampling. Twenty detailed chapters cover pore space relations, water retention, hydraulic conductivity, water table depth, dispersion, aggregation, particle size, shrinkage, Atterburg limits and strength. The book includes procedures for estimating soil physical properties from more readily available data and shows how soil physical data can be integrated into land planning and management decisions.
