Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five-year-old Joey Harrison's world is turned upside down when he and his seven-year-old sister, Beth, are placed in foster care in 1942. With the war in Europe underway and the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan, the children's father joins the Army despite the pleadings of his young wife. From 1941 until 1947 Joey's mother will have five additional children fathered by another man. All of the children are subsequently placed in foster care where Joey and his siblings suffer unconscionable abuse at the hands of foster parents. They are shifted from foster care to foster care, including one stay in an orphanage for Joey. Joey's mother is age 40 when she dies due to cirrhosis of the liver and the children's father petitions the State of New York, requesting that Joey come and live with him. What follows for the boy, as well as his siblings, is a loveless path of more foster homes, formidable hurdles, and abuse until Joey ultimately triumphs and reaches the top of the stairs. It's an inspirational journey the reader will witness as they see Joey and his six siblings become reunited after overcoming multiple hardships and are finally reunited over twenty-five years later.

Book Falling Up

Download or read book Falling Up written by Raymond Strother and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2005-04-01 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brash and rollicking autobiography is a potent primer of the rough-and-tumble world of political consulting by one of its founding fathers and preeminent experts. A cross between a patriotic redneck raconteur and a TV-savvy renaissance man, Raymond D. Strother is unafraid to name names and refuses to mince words in tales of what he calls "the beauty and gore" of American politics. From the crash course in Louisiana politics and corruption he received following graduate school to his compelling entry into the big-time senatorial and congressional races of the 1970s and early 1980s and his adventures with candidates Clinton, Gore, and Hart and famous consultants Dick Morris and James Carville, Strother offers a wildly entertaining, controversial, but finally optimistic political and media success story that will thrill and inspire anyone spellbound by American politics.

Book excerpt: From the time Dana Liesegang could walk, she was out looking for adventure, and she never stopped. As a fearless child in the Pacific Northwest, she climbed trees, caught frogs, and held her own with any boy in town. She brought that true-grit, fire-in-her-belly attitude to the Navy . . . and to her recovery from the unthinkable. At the age of 19, she was sexually assaulted by a fellow sailor and thrown off a cliff, left for dead. She survived—but woke up in a hospital hours later paralyzed from the neck down, with doctors giving no hope for recovery. They underestimated the spirit and stubbornness of their patient. In Falling Up: My Wild Ride from Victim to Kick-Ass Victory, Dana recounts her agonizing and sometimes comical struggle from total dependence to doing the "impossible": walking again. With equal parts humor and rawness, she brings us along on her wild ride, as she navigates her new world, hurtles through rocky relationships, deals with family secrets, and returns to her love of sports and the outdoors. In the process, she learns the importance of forgiveness, discovers the awe-inspiring power of belief and perseverance, and transforms herself from silent victim to outspoken advocate and inspiration for people everywhere. After all, sometimes an unexpected fall can lead a person to reach for magnificent heights.

Book Down the Up Staircase

Download or read book Down the Up Staircase written by Bruce D. Haynes and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-11 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Down the Up Staircase tells the story of one Harlem family across three generations, connecting its journey to the historical and social forces that transformed Harlem over the past century. Bruce D. Haynes and Syma Solovitch capture the tides of change that pushed blacks forward through the twentieth century—the Great Migration, the Harlem Renaissance, the early civil rights victories, the Black Power and Black Arts movements—as well as the many forces that ravaged black communities, including Haynes's own. As an authority on race and urban communities, Haynes brings unique sociological insights to the American mobility saga and the tenuous nature of status and success among the black middle class. In many ways, Haynes's family defied the odds. All four great-grandparents on his father's side owned land in the South as early as 1880. His grandfather, George Edmund Haynes, was the founder of the National Urban League and a protégé of eminent black sociologist W. E. B. Du Bois; his grandmother, Elizabeth Ross Haynes, was a noted children's author of the Harlem Renaissance and a prominent social scientist. Yet these early advances and gains provided little anchor to the succeeding generations. This story is told against the backdrop of a crumbling three-story brownstone in Sugar Hill that once hosted Harlem Renaissance elites and later became an embodiment of the family's rise and demise. Down the Up Staircase is a stirring portrait of this family, each generation walking a tightrope, one misstep from free fall.

Download or read book Hall of Small Mammals written by Thomas Pierce and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2015-01-08 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wild, inventive ride of a short story collection from a distinctive new American storyteller. The author of the forthcoming novel, The Afterlives. The stories in Thomas Pierce’s Hall of Small Mammals take place at the confluence of the commonplace and the cosmic, the intimate and the infinite. A fossil-hunter, a comedian, a hot- air balloon pilot, parents and children, believers and nonbelievers, the people in these stories are struggling to understand the absurdity and the magnitude of what it means to exist in a family, to exist in the world. In “Shirley Temple Three,” a mother must shoulder her son’s burden—a cloned and resurrected wooly mammoth who wreaks havoc on her house, sanity, and faith. In “The Real Alan Gass,” a physicist in search of a mysterious particle called the “daisy” spends her days with her boyfriend, Walker, and her nights with the husband who only exists in the world of her dreams, Alan Gass. Like the daisy particle itself—“forever locked in a curious state of existence and nonexistence, sliding back and forth between the two”—the stories in Thomas Pierce’s Hall of Small Mammals are exquisite, mysterious, and inextricably connected. From this enchanting primordial soup, Pierce’s voice emerges—a distinct and charming testament of the New South, melding contemporary concerns with their prehistoric roots to create a hilarious, deeply moving symphony of stories.
