Book excerpt: (As seen on CBS News Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood) Trees resonate deeply in the souls of millions of people. A lonely bur oak in the middle of a southwest Wisconsin cornfield spoke to photographer Mark Hirsch. That Tree spoke of hidden beauty and hope. It spoke of patience and dedication. It even gave him personal healing he wasn't aware he needed. Thus every day for the next year Hirsch would quietly attempt to coax the stories from That Tree. Hirsch, after purchasing his first iPhone, scoffed at the idea that a professional photographer would find the camera inside his new phone interesting in any way. A good friend goaded him into trying it and one day in the middle of a January snow storm Hirsch took his first picture of That Tree. He'd driven past That Tree every day for 19 years and never took a picture. That would change. Now a passionate Facebook following of 33,000+ people look for Hirsch's daily picture of That Tree and countless media outlets have featured Hirsch's story including NPR, NBC News, Le Monde, The Guardian, Sierra Club, Chicago Tribune, Denver Post, San Francisco Chronicle, and many more. That Tree is hardcover, 192 pages, measuring 10x10 inches and is published by Press Syndication Group. 2013.

Book A Giant Tree has Fallen

Download or read book A Giant Tree has Fallen written by Seifudein Adem and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book memorialising the life and work of Ali Alamin Mazrui comprises more than 130 tributes written by people ranging from heads of state to journalists. Presented here are those tributes for which copyright permissions were received from among the hundreds that appeared online and print. In preparing this book, it was made very clear that, unlike other books of tributes to great men and women, there would be no segmentation of the sections based on writers and speakers positions in life. Instead, it was decided that the tributes be presented in alphabetical order based on writers and speakers last names. The decision hinged on the fact that Mazur would not have apposed any segmentation of people by class, race, ethnicity and gender etc. Nonetheless, out of great respect for Mazurs immediate family members, their tributes are presented first, followed by those from his global family members. Also included at the beginning of the book are three chapters that comprise an introductory essay, a brief biography of Mazur, and an essay on metaphorical-linguistic analysis of the tributes that follow. The book also has a preface by the coeditors and a forward by Salim Ahmed Salim, the former Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania and Secretary-General of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now known as the Africa Union. Dr. Salim, who served as the Secretary-General of the OAU from 1989 to 2001, was Mazuris friend and contemporary. Mazruri once described Salim as Mr Africa and the first real postcolonial Secretary-General of the OAU.

Book The Falling Tree

  • Author : Bobby Whitman

  • ISBN : 9781542679893
  • Pages : 406 pages

Download or read book The Falling Tree written by Bobby Whitman and published by . This book was released on 2017-02-12 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A falling tree is someone whose "family tree" is in danger of dying-out because its branches did not bear fruit; many of its branches did not produce children, so the tree can go on...The Falling Tree is about Bickley Raleigh, an army veteran and former military policeman, who's asked to help his former teacher, Samantha Grady, deal with people who want to ruin her family name. "My family is under siege..." she tells Bick. Butterflake Wilson is his godfather, who gets him to help her. He's also Bick's best friend in the world, because Bick's father has just died--and he's an only child who doesn't have any immediate family that he's aware of. While he's pining away about the loss of his girlfriend, Molly, and his left hand, which he lost in the Gulf War, a city-wide homecoming is approaching. Samantha and her deceased husband, Dr. James Grady, are to be presented with awards. They are also honoring the doctor with a statue in a plush hospital garden. Grady was a popular physician whose claims to fame were the humanitarian trips he made to Africa. On one such trip, he was gifted with a diamond from a village chieftain, which (Samantha says) has gone missing, and she wants Bick to help her find it. A street boss named Frank Lawless is harassing Samantha's granddaughter, Jessica, and threatening to embarrass the Grady name during their finest hour. Samantha wants Bick to get Jessica away from the "skunk" street boss, and avoid a scandal. Then there are two brothers, Saul and Harmen Pettigrew, operating the funeral home Bick's father once worked for. One is an unfulfilled artist, the other is a failed boxer. They team up with the street boss to become eternal pains in Samantha's side...and Bick has to deal with them all. And through it all, someone is slashing people, stabbing others, and using chloroform as their knockout chemical of choice. Bick has his one-hand full, and he gets knocked around a lot. Maybe he should have stayed on his medication, or at least put himself up for adoption, as he needs a family of his own to catch him, because he is forever falling down. Being unmarried and without children is not all it's cracked up to be, but at least Bick Raleigh's got his godfather and former army captain watching his back...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I chose my title Fallen from a Tree because I fell from my tree stand, and so to speak, Adam and Eve also fell from a tree in the Garden of Eden.I enjoy archery hunting and had no idea what was about to happen. My tree stand always was safe. But suddenly, the tree stand broke, and I was falling from fifteen feet high. My body fell helplessly to the ground. I landed on my shoulder blades. I had the wind knocked out of me. I reached for my phone. The battery was low and only had 5 percent battery life. I called my friends for help.At the hospital, I was given a CAT scan and X-rays. I had five broken ribs. Two days later, I started coughing and passed out while my brother Michael went for a nurse for help. I was dying. This book is about my near-death experience and my journey to visit God and heaven. I want to be able to share my experience and pain with people who have illnesses and doubts about God and heaven. God and heaven are real!I want to be encouraging to all people-those who are dying and those who have illnesses. It was a struggle for me to rehabilitate. I did not know if I would be able to walk, talk, eat, and drink and had to learn how to do these things all over again. I developed an understanding for handicapped people and those who have trouble communicating thoughts and language.Rehabilitation was very important to my recovery process. I worked very hard, wanting to succeed and give strength to my body and mind. I ended up having a total of eleven broken ribs. It was very painful to move.God wrote this book for us to share. He is the author of the book, and He wanted me to be coauthor. I fell from my tree stand and visited God. It was an amazing journey!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A playful story about one acorn’s arduous journey to becoming a tree. In the style of “The House That Jack Built,” here’s a cumulative, rhyming tale about a nut that falls from an oak that holds the house where Jill plays. The acorn travels inside an old shoe, above the trees and under a stream, as one animal after another steals it, drops it or tosses it. But in the end, the acorn lands on a hillside, where it grows into another grand oak, which now holds the house where Jack (Jill’s grandson) plays. It’s the circle of life … well, not quite a circle. But loads of fun all the same!
