Book Fall Winter Current Reversals on the Texas Louisiana Continental Shelf

Download or read book Fall Winter Current Reversals on the Texas Louisiana Continental Shelf written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fall-winter recurrence of current reversal from westward to eastward is identified on the Texas-Louisiana continental shelf using the current meter [Texas-Louisiana Shelf Physical Oceanography Program (LATEX-A)] and near surface drifting buoy [Surface Current and Lagrangian Drift Program (SCULP- 1)] observations in 1993 and 1994. Reversal events roughly satisfy the Poisson distribution with one current reversal nearly every twelve days. Synoptic winds seem responsible for the current reversal events. Other processes such as offshore eddies shed from the Loop Currents and river run off are less important to change alongshore flow direction at synoptic scales. A statistical model is established to predict the synoptic current reversal using the surface wind observations.

Download or read book P Vector Inverse Method written by Peter C. Chu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-02-15 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major task for physical oceanographers is to determine the movement of oceanic water from observations. This book introduces the P-vector inverse method, with a two-step determination of the velocity from hydrographic data. The book provide insights into the basics of the P-vector inverse method and the features of the inverted global and regional ocean circulations. Upper undergraduate and graduate students as well as oceanographers, marine biologists and other environmental scientists will find this book a valuable tool for their studies.

Book Baroclinic Processes on Continental Shelves

Download or read book Baroclinic Processes on Continental Shelves written by Christopher N. K. Mooers and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1986 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Coastal and Estuarine Sciences, Volume 3. The AGU Monograph Series on Coastal and Estuarine Regimes provides timely summaries and reviews of major process and regional studies, both observational and theoretical, and of theoretical and numerical models. It grew out of an IAPSO/SCOR/ECOR working group initiative several years ago intended to enhance scientific communications on this topic. The series' authors and editors are drawn from the international community. The ultimate goal is to stimulate bringing the theory, observations, and modeling of coastal and estuarine regimes together on the global scale.

Book Circulation in the Gulf of Mexico

Download or read book Circulation in the Gulf of Mexico written by Wilton Sturges and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 2005-01-14 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 161. In this book, we describe our current state of knowledge on circulation in the Gulf of Mexico through 22 papers at the forefront of research. The view is selective rather than all-inclusive, with primary focus on circulation at the sea surface and at depth, including nearshore flow. In choosing topics, we have attempted to avoid the distinction between observations and models, as both are essential to advance our understanding of this exceptional body of water. We have also written for specialists and non-specialists alike in both science and industry: for those who work directly on the science associated with the Gulf, and for those whose work depends on the Gulf. And we refer here to physical oceanography, marine geology, sedimentology, coastal and estuarine science, as well as to the petrochemical and fishing industries.
