Download or read book Ascension Theory written by Christopher Bolin and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This meditation,” writes Christopher Bolin in Ascension Theory,“is about appearing without motes between us: / it is practice for presenting oneself to God.” Bolin’s stark and masterful debut collection records a deeply moving attempt to restore poetry to the possibilities of redemptive action. The physical and emotional landscapes of these poems, rendered with clear-eyed precision, are beyond the reaches of protection and consolation: tundra, frozen sea, barren woodlands, skies littered with satellite trash, fields marked by abandoned, makeshift shrines, sick rooms, vacant reaches that provide “nodes / in every direction // for sensing // the second coming.” Bolin’s eye and mind are acutely tuned to the edges of broken objects and vistas, to the mysterious remnants out of which meaningful speech might be reconstituted. These poems unfold in a world of beautiful, crystalline absence, one that is nearly depopulated, as though encountered in the aftermath of an unnamed violence to the land and to the soul. In poems of prodigious elegance and anxious control, Bolin evokes influences as various as Robert Frost, James Wright, Robert Hass, George Oppen, and Robert Creeley, while fashioning his own original and urgent idiom, one that both theorizes and tests the prospects of imaginative ascension, and finds “new locutions for referencing / sky.”

Download or read book The Ascension of Christ written by Patrick Schreiner and published by Lexham Press. This book was released on 2020-07-29 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's essential to the Gospel, but we rarely talk about it. The good news of Jesus includes his life, death, resurrection, and future return--but what about his ascension? Though often neglected or misunderstood, the ascension is integral to the gospel. In The Ascension of Christ, Patrick Schreiner argues that Jesus' work would be incomplete without his ascent to God's right hand. Not only a key moment in the Gospel story, Jesus' ascension was necessary for his present ministry in and through the church. Schreiner argues that Jesus' residence in heaven marks a turning point in his three-fold offices of prophet, priest, and king. As prophet, Jesus builds the church and its witness. As priest, he intercedes before the Father. As king, he rules over all. A full appreciation of the ascension is essential for understanding the Bible, Christian doctrine, and Christ's ongoing work in the world.

Download or read book The Well of Ascension written by Brandon Sanderson and published by Tor Books. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now with over 10 million copies sold, The Mistborn Series has the thrills of a heist story, the twistiness of political intrigue, and the epic scale of a landmark fantasy saga. The impossible has been accomplished. The Lord Ruler -- the man who claimed to be god incarnate and brutally ruled the world for a thousand years -- has been vanquished. But Kelsier, the hero who masterminded that triumph, is dead too, and now the awesome task of building a new world has been left to his young protégé, Vin, the former street urchin who is now the most powerful Mistborn in the land, and to the idealistic young nobleman she loves. As Kelsier's protégé and slayer of the Lord Ruler she is now venerated by a budding new religion, a distinction that makes her intensely uncomfortable. Even more worrying, the mists have begun behaving strangely since the Lord Ruler died, and seem to harbor a strange vaporous entity that haunts her. Stopping assassins may keep Vin's Mistborn skills sharp, but it's the least of her problems. Luthadel, the largest city of the former empire, doesn't run itself, and Vin and the other members of Kelsier's crew, who lead the revolution, must learn a whole new set of practical and political skills to help. It certainly won't get easier with three armies – one of them composed of ferocious giants – now vying to conquer the city, and no sign of the Lord Ruler's hidden cache of atium, the rarest and most powerful allomantic metal. As the siege of Luthadel tightens, an ancient legend seems to offer a glimmer of hope. But even if it really exists, no one knows where to find the Well of Ascension or what manner of power it bestows. Download or read book Ascension to Death written by Mamdouh Azzam and published by Haus Publishing. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ascension to Death is the first work of acclaimed Syrian writer Mamdouh Azzam to be published in English. Set against the backdrop of a conservative Druze region of southern Syria, this is the tragic story of the orphan Salma, who falls in love with a boy from her village but is then forced into an arranged marriage. The controller of Salma’s fate is her tyrannical uncle, who, as her guardian and a powerful community leader with governmental ties, is all too pleased to unload the burden of his brother’s daughter onto the first man to propose. As Salma desperately tries to escape the marriage, the novel follows her attempt to flee with her lover. But after her family colludes with the authorities against her, Salma finds herself trapped in a nightmarish ordeal of imprisonment, torture, and abandonment. One of the most beloved Syrian novels of our time, Ascension to Death is a dark, inventive, and unflinchingly honest look at both the best and the worst to be found in human nature and our modern world.

Download or read book Latin American Writers on Gay and Lesbian Themes written by David William Foster and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1994-11-07 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gay and lesbian themes in Latin American literature have been largely ignored. This reference fills this gap by providing more than a hundred alphabetically arranged entries for Latin American authors who have treated gay or lesbian material in their works. Each entry explores the significance of gay and lesbian themes in a particular author's writings and closes with a bibliography of primary and secondary sources. The figures included have a professed gay identity, or have written on gay or lesbian themes in either a positive or negative way, or have authored works in which a gay sensibility can be identified. The volume pays particular attention to the difficulty of ascribing North American critical perspectives to Latin American authors, and studies these authors within the larger context of Latin American culture. The book includes entries for men and women, and for authors from Latin American countries as well as Latino writers from the United States. The entries are written by roughly 60 expert contributors from Latin America, the U.S., and Europe.
Download or read book Fixed Stars and Judicial Astrology written by George Noonan and published by American Federation of Astr. This book was released on 1990 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the least understood and most misused elements in astrology today are the fixed stars. Current practice is to consider the stars as no more than mini-manifestations of the planets whose nature they are presumed to hold. The locations of the stars projected onto the ecliptic are then considered valid points for aspectual relationships. No special significance is attributed to the non-zodiacal constellations; nor is a star's location within a constellation given any weight whatsoever. Finally, modern astrology places no distinction on the use of the stars and constellations in genethliacal astrology and the other branches of the ancient art. In this book the natures of the fixed stars and constellations as known by the classicists are discussed in detail. Methods of delineating the fixed stars are indicated, with special emphasis on the applications to judicial astrology. Included are chapters on the nature of the fixed stars; the northern, southern and zodiacal constellations; genethliacal applications of the fixed stars; judicial astrology; and three appendices with information on mathematics and rulership and a complete listing of the fixed stars.
