Book excerpt: “Brilliant plotting, relentless suspense,” raved the Washington Post. “A new synonym for terror,” crowned the Detroit Free Press. The critics agree: no one writes suspense like Karin Slaughter, whose thrillers featuring medical examiner Sara Linton and her ex-husband, police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, have propelled her to the top of bestseller lists the world over. Now Slaughter fuses her unmatched grasp of forensic science and a mastery of complex relationships in a riveting tale of faith, doubt, and murder. The victim was buried alive in the Georgia woods—then killed in a horrifying fashion. When Sara Linton and Jeffrey Tolliver stumble upon the body, both become consumed with finding out who killed the pretty, impeccably dressed young woman. And for Sara and Jeffrey, a harrowing journey begins, one that will test their own turbulent relationship and draw dozens of lives into the case. Lena Adams is one of them. A Grant County detective for years, she has her own reasons for being drawn to this case and a fierce drive to see justice done. For these three people, who have each seen the darkest side of human nature, the body of the murdered girl is but the first in a series of shocking and sordid revelations. Now, as Jeffrey and Sara narrow the field of suspects, they must confront their own doubts and indiscretions, while Lena Adams sees herself reflected in the frightened eyes of a battered woman who may be the key figure in the case. As Faithless builds to a stunning and unforgettable climax, Karin Slaughter masterfully brings together strands of interlocking lives, family secrets, and hidden passions with one astounding truth: the identity of a killer who is more evil and dangerous than anyone could have guessed. BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Karin Slaughter's Unseen.

Download or read book First Loves written by Ted Solotaroff and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2011-01-04 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solotaroff was one of the notable intellectuals of his generation, the founder of the New American Review, editor and friend of Philip Roth, and editor-in-chief at HarperCollins. Solotaroff reveals himself here as a thinking man with a big heart and gaping wounds of love that are not disconnected from the contributions he has made to American culture throughout his career. Solotaroff turns back to the earliest pages of his romance with Lynn, remembering his first sighting of her emerging from the water as if from a dream. Yet the image, as he penetrates the intervening layers of sorrow and disappointment, is almost impossibly distant, fragile. First Loves reenacts the blurring of a perfect conception in the mind of a man who would devote his life to precision of thought and word. This opposition, of romantic and intellectual passion, drives the narrative and eventually brings it to crisis. First Loves could be described as a very private feat of honesty from a public intellectual. Solotaroff’s willingness to admit the failures, personal and professional, alongside the triumphs of his career gives a three-dimensional intensity to the emotions on the page. Working with all of the gritty and romantic elements of his storied life, Solotaroff manages to avoid a tone too heroic or honey-dipped; he manages simply to tell the tale.

Download or read book First Love Prayers written by Bethany Frazer and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2011-03-30 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first title for this book was called My Prayer to My Love. It has always been a book from me to God and from Him back to me. It was 1999, I was away at Bible College in Sydney, Australia and God started giving me beautiful prayers and asking me to write them down and re-read them over to myself after I was done. When I would re-read the prayers I found I was weeping every time. He was expressing to me, through my own writing, how much He loved me. So much! It was then that He started leading me to put the prayers together in a book and to share the prayers with others. I gave them to only a handful of people, and watched as God started blessing their own prayer walks through these prayers. I realized that the prayers He was giving me were not sole for my benefit, growth and encouragement, but were meant for far more than just me. I feel honored that I am now able, 10 years later, to share these prayers with you. I pray they minister to you during different seasons of your walk and relationship with Him. And that they help you to grow closer and more intimate with Him, as you seek Him and His presence for every facet of your life. He really does love youso much!
