Book excerpt: In the southern German city of Stuttgart lives a pious Muslim population that has merged with the local population to create a meaningful shared existence. In this ethnographic account, the author introduces and examines the lives of ordinary residents, neighborhoods, and mosque communities to analyze moments and spaces where Muslims and non-Muslims engage with each other and accommodate their respective needs. These accounts show that even in the face of resentment and discrimination, this pious population has indeed become an integral part of the urban community.

Book Faith based organisations and exclusion in European cities

Download or read book Faith based organisations and exclusion in European cities written by Beaumont, Justin and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2012-10-03 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time of heightened neoliberal globalisation and crisis, welfare state retrenchment and desecularisation of society, amid uniquely European controversies over immigration, integration and religious-based radicalism, this timely book explores the role played by faith-based organisations (FBOs), which are growing in importance in the provision of social services in the European context. Taking a multidisciplinary approach, the contributions to the volume present original research examples and a pan-European perspective to assess the role of FBOs in combating poverty and various expressions of exclusion and social distress in cities across Europe. This significant and highly topical volume should become a vital reference source for the burgeoning number of studies that are likely follow and will make essential reading for students and academics in social policy, sociology, geography, politics, urban studies and theology/ religious studies.

Download or read book Faith in the City written by Church of England. Commission on Urban Priority Areas and published by Church House Pub. This book was released on 1985 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four years after Lord Scarman's report on the Brixton disorders, and at a time of continuing urban unrest, what future is there for our inner cities and housing estates? How should the Church of England, and other bodies, including government, respond? This was the brief given by the Archbishop of Canterbury to a distinguished 18-member Commission drawn from a wide range of backgrounds. After two years of taking evidence and visiting the major cities where economic, physical and social conditions are at their most acute and depressing, the Commission's report paints a disturbing picture. The report makes recommendations to the Church about its place and responsibilities in the urban priority areas. Important recommendations are also made about public policy issues: unemployment, housing, social and community work, education, policing, and urban policy. In its call for action on a broad front, the Commission argues that Church and State must have faith in the city. There needs to be a clear commitment - and a positive response - by the nation as a whole.

Book Faith in the Nation

Download or read book Faith in the Nation written by Zaki Cooper and published by Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR). This book was released on 2008 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique collection brings together a group of senior faith leaders to express their views on Britishness, multiculturalism and the role of religion in the public realm. Our contributors explore whether religious affiliation aids or prevents a healthy process of cultural integration, and reflect on how their own communities have been received within, and have contributed to, British society. These are vital topics to air, particularly at a time when signs are emerging of a growing estrangement between the faith communities and an increasingly individualised, culturally diverse and fragmented society.
