In this practical book, he shows you how to answer 20 objections to Christianity, including questions such as - What physical proof is there that God even exists? - Why does a "loving" God threaten eternal torture for not believing in him? - If there's an all-powerful God, why is the world so out of control? Book excerpt: Addiction to Comfort SECRETS OF ALWAYS MAKING APPROPRIATE MORAL CHOICES? In regard to all Addictions, I find it is impossible to arrive at an objective and constant standard of truth and morality without bringing Jesus Christ onto the podium. If an important standard of truth and morality exists, it cannot be the product of the sinner, or it will not be impartial or decisive. It must be the result of a far greater Mind, that of the Christ Jesus. If a constant and unchanging truth exists, it must be beyond human timelines, or it will not be continuous, it must be everlasting. If a universal choice of right versus wrong exists, it must go beyond individual understanding, or it will not be universal. It must be above us all. However, absolute truth must be something or someone to free the addicted that is common to all humanity, and to creation. All is found in one person, and He Jesus Christ is the source of all truth. He is the secret of always making appropriate moral choices.....For in each conflict we have....positions us in charge of determining what, is the correct moral choice we can put forward? If our instant thought and or our comeback is that of self-deceptive ends justify the means, your determination is flawed. If your response may be however difficult, but you choose to preserve and improve not only your own human life, integrity and self-respect, you have chosen not to take over Gods role as Creator and Sovereignty over your conflict. Be hopeful and please God, but never partake as God. ...... RICHARD KAY

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the author of Relationship Goals . . . Will you be remembered as a person who claimed to follow God but liked to play it safe? Or as a person who lived your life out on the limb and trusted God enough to live in crazy faith? Noah looked crazy when he started building the ark . . . until it started raining. It was crazy for Moses to lead a nation of people into the desert away from Egypt . . . until the Red Sea parted. It was crazy to believe that a fourteen-year-old virgin would give birth to the Son of God . . . until Mary held Jesus in her arms. There are many things that seem normal or average today that at one point in time seemed absolutely crazy. Smartphones, Wi-Fi, and even the electric light bulb were all groundbreaking, history-making inventions that started out as crazy ideas. Our see-it-to-believe-it generation tends to have a hard time exercising true faith—one that steps out, takes action, and sees mountain-moving results. Many of us would rather play it safe and stand on the sidelines, but it’s crazy faith that helps us see God move and reveals His promises. In Crazy Faith, Pastor Michael Todd shows us how to step out in faith and dive into the purposeful life of trusting God for the impossible. Even if you have to start with baby faith or maybe faith, you can become empowered to let go of your lazy faith, trust God through your hazy faith, and learn to live a lifestyle of crazy faith. With powerful stories of modern-day faith warriors who take their cues from biblical heroes, Michael Todd equips you to • believe for the impossible • choose hope over fear • be alert to the voice of God • cope with loss and doubt • develop a deeper level of trust in God • speak faith-filled declarations • inspire crazy faith in others God’s not looking for somebody to give Him all the reasons why His plans can’t happen. He’s looking for somebody to believe they will happen. In fact, He has so much He wants to do through you. The question is, Are you crazy enough to believe it?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "FAITHFUL MINDS" is a comprehensive guide that combines the principles of Biblical counseling with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help readers achieve emotional and mental wellness. This book explores the intersection of these two disciplines, offering practical advice and guidance for those seeking to improve their mental health through a faith-based approach. Drawing on Biblical teachings and psychological insights, the author provides a step-by-step guide to understanding the root causes of emotional struggles and negative thinking patterns. Readers will learn how to identify and challenge negative thoughts and beliefs, develop healthy coping mechanisms, and cultivate a more positive and resilient mindset. This book is an essential resource for anyone seeking to improve their mental and emotional health through a faith-based approach. It offers practical guidance, insightful anecdotes, and helpful exercises to help readers apply the principles of Biblical counseling and CBT to their daily lives. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, or other emotional challenges, "FAITHFUL MINDS" offers a path to healing and renewed hope. Throughout this book, certain phrases and scriptures are repeated for emphasis, as a way of inculcating them into your way of thinking. This is a technique that Jesus also used, where he repeated his points to ensure that it was well established in the minds of his listeners. Repetition not only aids in memory but can also be used to effectively highlight key ideas and help your audience to understand them clearly. A good example of this is found in the book of Proverbs, where God inspired Solomon to repeat certain proverbs almost word-for-word, in order to convey knowledge and sharpen understanding.

Book Addiction and Devotion in Early Modern England

Download or read book Addiction and Devotion in Early Modern England written by Rebecca Lemon and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rebecca Lemon illuminates a previously-buried conception of addiction, as a form of devotion at once laudable, difficult, and extraordinary, that has been concealed by the persistent modern link of addiction to pathology. Surveying sixteenth-century invocations, she reveals how early moderns might consider themselves addicted to study, friendship, love, or God. However, she also uncovers their understanding of addiction as a form of compulsion that resonates with modern scientific definitions. Specifically, early modern medical tracts, legal rulings, and religious polemic stressed the dangers of addiction to alcohol in terms of disease, compulsion, and enslavement. Yet the relationship between these two understandings of addiction was not simply oppositional, for what unites these discourses is a shared emphasis on addiction as the overthrow of the will. Etymologically, "addiction" is a verbal contract or a pledge, and even as sixteenth-century audiences actively embraced addiction to God and love, writers warned against commitment to improper forms of addiction, and the term became increasingly associated with disease and tyranny. Examining canonical texts including Doctor Faustus, Twelfth Night, Henry IV, and Othello alongside theological, medical, imaginative, and legal writings, Lemon traces the variety of early modern addictive attachments. Although contemporary notions of addiction seem to bear little resemblance to its initial meanings, Lemon argues that the early modern period's understanding of addiction is relevant to our modern conceptions of, and debates about, the phenomenon.

Book Faithful in Small Things

Download or read book Faithful in Small Things written by Kevin Wiebe and published by MennoMedia, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-03-16 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can you help the poor when you can barely pay your own bills? Pastor Kevin Wiebe grew up below the poverty line, with his mother hunting for change in the couch to buy food for the baby. Wiebe now pastors a “low-resource” church of mostly immigrants—a congregation that transcends definitions of the helper and the helped and that doesn’t fit neatly into any stereotype of poverty. In Faithful in Small Things, Wiebe shows readers that writing big checks isn’t the only—or even the best—way to alleviate poverty. Along the way, he shines a spotlight on the value of small acts of love as a means of changing the world, and as vitally important to following Jesus. Investigating scriptural definitions of poverty and God’s heart for the poor throughout the Bible, Wiebe calls readers not only to “help the needy” but to acknowledge their own need and to work with God to serve others. By delving into concepts like brokenness, mutuality, dignity, and systemic injustice, Wiebe exposes gaps in the mainstream Christian understandings of economic inequality and explores holistic ways of reducing poverty. In doing so, he provides a better way forward for Christians committed to working for the flourishing of all. Jesus ministered to the poor, Jesus was poor. If both are true of our Savior, both can be true of us too.
