Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Companionship and strategies for job seekers Millions of people become unemployed every year, yet when job loss happens to us, we typically feel completely alone and often lost, ashamed, and afraid. No one knows how to comfort us when we lose our job. Unlike other griefs--when someone can say, "I'm sorry for your loss"--joblessness leaves family, friends, and acquaintances awkwardly searching for words. Jobs Lost, Faith Found is for those who feel alone due to job loss. It is also for those who offer respect, companionship, guidance, and resources to the unemployed. Mary C. Lindberg, pastor, chaplain, and spiritual director, draws on her family's experience of unemployment and the wisdom of many others, including sages from Scripture and the Christian tradition, to help readers discover a sense of worth and purpose on their way to a new job. She offers prayers, insights, Bible stories, and reflections to light the way during this time of uncertainty and wandering. The path toward hope will be your own, but the ideas, reflections, and strategies in this book will get you started on your journey.

Book excerpt: “The Hebrew root word for ‘work’ is also the root word for ‘service’, particularly service to God in worship. By combining the two English words, ‘work’ and ‘worship’, I hope to challenge people to integrate their faith and work. Work does not just refer to what is done in paid employment. I believe God sees work as any purposeful activity requiring focus and effort. It could be housework, schoolwork, caring for children or parents, study, paid work, voluntary work, etc.” — Kara Martin In her book, Kara explores the biblical view of work, provides six spiritual disciplines to integrate faith and work, shares practical wisdom on how to make a difference in the workplace, and offers ideas to help churches better equip their congregations to live out their faith at work.

Book The Reformation of Welfare

Download or read book The Reformation of Welfare written by Boland, Tom and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western culture has ‘faith’ in the labour market as a test of the worth of each individual. For those who are out of work, welfare is now less of a support than a means of purification and redemption. Continuously reformed by the left and right in politics, the contemporary welfare state attempts to transform the unemployed into active jobseekers, punishing non-compliance. Drawing on ideas from economic theology, this provocative book uncovers deep-rooted religious concepts and shows how they continue to influence contemporary views of work and unemployment: Jobcentres resemble purgatory where the unemployed attempt to redeem themselves, jobseeking is a form of pilgrimage in hope of salvation, and the economy appears as providence, whereby trials and tribulations test each individual. This book will be essential reading for those interested in the sociology and anthropology of modern economic life. Chapters 1 and 3 are available Open Access via OAPEN under CC-BY-NC-ND licence.

Book An Exploration of the Implications of Unemployment on Faith

Download or read book An Exploration of the Implications of Unemployment on Faith written by Kimberly Tennille Hunley and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract : The current study presents an exploratory research study of the implications of unemployment on faith. The qualitative research method and phenomenological design were used because the study aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the unemployment phenomenon in relation to an individual's faith. The phenomenological approach allowed a purposeful sample of 20 participants to express in-depth perspectives, feelings, and opinions about the unemployment experience and whether any implications to their personal faith exist. The study is significant to the leadership because the general problem is a common phenomenon and because people who are unemployed suffer with hopelessness and declined faith. Maslow's hierarchical of needs theory served as a framework for the study. The study's findings indicated a correlation between mental and physical health issues with unemployment and indicated that most unemployed adults do not experience any direct effect on their faith. Many participants expressed strengthened faith during traumatic experiences such as unemployment.
