Book Faith and Philosophical Enquiry

Download or read book Faith and Philosophical Enquiry written by D.Z. Phillips and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concern of this book is the nature of religious belief and the ways in which philosophical enquiry is related to it. Six chapters present the positive arguments the author wishes to put forward to discusses religion and rationality, scepticism about religion, language-games, belief and the loss of belief. The remaining chapters include criticisms of some contemporary philosophers of religion in the light of the earlier discussions, and the implications for more specific topics, such as religious education, are investigated. The book ends with a general attempt to say something about the character of philosophical enquiry, and to show how important it is to realise this character in the philosophy of religion.

Book excerpt: D. Z. Phillips is a leading figure in advocating a Wittgensteinian approach to the philosophical study of religion. His writings exert an important influence on contemporary philosophy of religion, giving a new direction to the philosophical discussion of religious belief and practice. Although his work has prompted much - often critical - comment, a thorough investigation has not been forthcoming. Grammars of Faith fills that gap. The book pays close attention to Wittgenstein's own remarks on religious belief, arranging them against the background of his broader philosophical methodology, as well as to the efforts of the early Wittgensteinians at providing a more comprehensive Wittgensteinian philosophy of religion. Central to this study are Phillips's understanding of philosophical enquiry as a form of contemplation, and his descriptive accounts of religious belief. By means of a careful and methodical examination of Phillips's oeuvre, the study seeks to present a fair assessment of Phillips's position, showing not only its weaknesses, but also its strength.

Download or read book Faith Film and Philosophy written by R. Douglas Geivett and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2009-09-20 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Those who tell stories rule society." Plato So who today are our principal storytellers? Not philosophers, but filmmakers. For those who know both the enormous entertainment potential and the culture-shaping power of film, this book will stir mind and imagination. For great stories freight world-sized ideas, ideas worthy of contemplation and conversation. Great cinema inspires wonder. But another philosopher, Aristotle, reminds us that wonder is the true source of philosophy. So perhaps Plato or Aristotle might have a shot at ruling society, even today--if they took an interest in film. These fourteen essays consider classic and current films together with several major philosophical themes, all within the context of Christian faith: (1) the human condition, (2) the human mind and the nature of knowing, (3) the moral life, and (4) faith and religion. Citizen Kane, Big Fish and Pretty Woman contribute to an in-depth consideration of the human condition. The Truman Show, The Matrix, Being John Malkovich and It's a Wonderful Life, among others, illuminate reflection on the human mind and the nature of knowing. Looking at the moral life, contributors interact with such notable films as Pleasantville, Bowling for Columbine, Mystic River and The Silence of the Lambs. The final section pursues the theme of faith and religion traced through a number of Hong Kong martial arts films, Contact, 2001: A Space Odyssey and U2's music documentary Rattle and Hum. A veritable film festival for all those who want to nurture the wonder of philosophical inquiry and the love of Christian theology through an engagement with the big ideas on the big screen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under the titles of Truth, Virtue, Freedom, Optimism, Beauty and Highest Good, Mr. Brewster discusses in pleasing style and from a spiritualistic standpoint some of the vital problems of religion and ethics. His book is a series of sketches on philosophical themes rather than an attempt to develop a philosophical system. He emphasizes the voluntary element in knowledge, and holds that for some opinions at any rate, such as those with which religion is concerned, "there is a practical and momentous alternative for everyone." While Mr. Brewster's voluntarism and his philosophy of faith would seem more congenial with indeterminism, it is interesting to notice that in his discussion of freedom he defends the deterministic position. The old analogy of the composition of forces is resorted to, and thus "the encumbrance of an incredible and compromising dogma," that of indeterminism, is removed. Some reservations are made at the end of the chapter; in fact, the doctrine that volition is determined by the strongest motive seems to be given up when it is said that "the weaker motive may often in this way, by being taken at the flood, become the stronger one at the critical moment. ... If the wish be present, even though relatively feeble, means may be found to make it prevail." David can still slay the giant with his sling, before the latter closes upon him. If Mr. Brewster is chargeable with inconsistency in his treatment of freedom, he is at least not the only writer on this subject against whom the accusation may be made. Especially interesting is the chapter on Beauty, in which the author contends that no naturalistic explanation of beauty can be adequate. Beauty is "an effluence we know not whence unless it comes from the soul of the universe." Beauty is "the promise of God impressed upon his works," and for the man of faith "the universe exists mainly for beauty and for love." -The Princeton Theological Review, Volume 14 [1916]

Book The Autonomy of Religious Belief

Download or read book The Autonomy of Religious Belief written by Frederick James Crosson and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of original essays deals with the meaning and truth of religious language. The background of the discussion is found in the linguistic analysis of Wittgenstein and others, for whom, as a form of life, language is seen as an organic part of the life of a human group. But the language of a people is characterized by an internal heterogeneity of "language-games" of different discourses- scientific, moral, religious- each having its own rules of what can be meaningfully said.
