Book Unified We Are a Force

Download or read book Unified We Are a Force written by Joerg Rieger and published by Chalice Press. This book was released on 2016-05-10 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American dream of "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps" is no longer possible, if it ever was. Most of us live paycheck-to-paycheck, and inequality has become one of the greatest problems facing our country. Working people and people of faith have the power to change this-but only when we get unified! In this practical and theological handbook for justice, renowned theologian Joerg Rieger and his wife, community and labor activist Rosemarie Henkel-Rieger, help the working majority (the 99% of us) understand what is happening and how we can make a difference. Discover how our faith is deeply connected with our work. Find out how to organize people and build power and what our different faith traditions can contribute. Learn from case studies where these principles have been used successfully-and how we can use them. Develop "deep solidarity" as a way to forge unity while employing our differences for the common good.

Download or read book The Labor of Faith written by Judith Casselberry and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Labor of Faith Judith Casselberry examines the material and spiritual labor of the women of the Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith, Inc., which is based in Harlem and one of the oldest and largest historically Black Pentecostal denominations in the United States. This male-headed church only functions through the work of the church's women, who, despite making up three-quarters of its adult membership, hold no formal positions of power. Casselberry shows how the women negotiate this contradiction by using their work to produce and claim a spiritual authority that provides them with a particular form of power. She also emphasizes how their work in the church is as significant, labor intensive, and critical to their personhood, family, and community as their careers, home and family work, and community service are. Focusing on the circumstances of producing a holy black female personhood, Casselberry reveals the ways twenty-first-century women's spiritual power operates and resonates with meaning in Pentecostal, female-majority, male-led churches.

Download or read book Faith Class and Labor written by Jin Young Choi and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-12-16 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the fact that 99 percent of us work for a living and although work shapes us to the core, class and labor are topics that are underrepresented in the work of scholars of religion, theology, and the Bible. With this volume, an international group of scholars and activists from nine different countries is bringing issues of religion, class, and labor back into conversation. Historians and theologians investigate how new images of God and the world emerge, and what difference they can make. Biblical critics develop new takes on ancient texts that lead to the reversal of readings that had been seemingly stable, settled, and taken for granted. Activists and organizers identify neglected sources of power and energy returning in new force and point to transformations happening. Asking how labor and religion mutually shape each other and how the agency of working people operates in their lives, the contributors also employ intersectional approaches that engage race, gender, sexuality, and colonialism. This volume presents transdisciplinary, transtextual, transactional, transnational, and transgressive work in progress, much needed in our time.

Book Reverend Addie Wyatt

Download or read book Reverend Addie Wyatt written by Marcia Walker-McWilliams and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Labor leader, civil rights activist, outspoken feminist, African American clergywoman--Reverend Addie Wyatt stood at the confluence of many rivers of change in twentieth century America. The first female president of a local chapter of the United Packinghouse Workers of America, Wyatt worked alongside Martin Luther King Jr. and Eleanor Roosevelt and appeared as one of Time magazine's Women of the Year in 1975. Marcia Walker-McWilliams tells the incredible story of Addie Wyatt and her times. What began for Wyatt as a journey to overcome poverty became a lifetime commitment to social justice and the collective struggle against economic, racial, and gender inequalities. Walker-McWilliams illuminates how Wyatt's own experiences with hardship and many forms of discrimination drove her work as an activist and leader. A parallel journey led her to develop an abiding spiritual faith, one that denied defeatism by refusing to accept such circumstances as immutable social forces.

Download or read book Labor in Faith written by Sylvester Veal Jr. and published by S/leek .Inspiration. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a born again believer it is time that you get your spiritual understanding to a level, which is worthy of your calling, appointment, and purpose. Too often Christians become subject to the world, including worldly thinking. But God has called you out of the world and into His Kingdom here on earth. Yes your natural body lives in the world, but your residence is of royalty in Heaven. For the Word of God tell us that it is the believer’s responsibility to bring God’s Will from Heaven to earth. As a child and heir to the Kingdom of God, you have access to supernatural powers, which operate on earth. See, the average Christian cannot receive this message because they are not at the level of acceptable spiritual understanding to receive it, i.e. of spiritual maturity. As Dr. Bill Winston says, your salvation comes with something, “Bread comes with this”. This means that when you got born again, healing came with your salvation, deliverance came with your salvation, wealth came with your salvation, businesses came with your salvation, and homes, cars, and possessions came with your salvation. The Word of God reminds us that if you seek the Kingdom of God first and His Righteousness all things will be added unto you. Now it is known that somewhere down the line born again believers have conformed to the world and the world’s way of thinking-- including the concept behind work. The world has taught you that you must work hard for success and this is how you become successful. It is my purpose and responsibility to let you know today that the devil is a liar and that you must not be deceived. As a born again believer, works of the law and flesh are canceled by the blood of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Jesus died on the cross so that through Him by faith you may receive your inheritance in Heaven and earth-- paid for in full! In relation, it is known in the Word of God that faith without works is dead. However, you must understand that the works God is referring to is not natural works but spiritual works, which unlocks access to God’s Grace, i.e. God’s Unmerited Favor. The Word of God makes it very clear that you are not saved by works or deeds, but by grace, to prevent all boasting of man/woman. As a result, God does not want you to work for anything, because you will think of yourself more highly that you should, which usually results in excessive pride and forgetting about the one who made a way and brought you through-- God! Finally, a higher spiritual understanding teaches us that faith is the key to accessing all of God’s Power, Grace, Love, Mercy, Forgiveness, and Favor. God does not take money; you cannot buy your way into Heaven. God does not take work; you cannot work your way into Heaven. God does not take good deeds; you cannot manipulate your way into Heaven. If God does not take them in Heaven, He does not take them on earth. I am trying to get your mind renewed to see that the only working element that you have to get you into Heaven (both spiritually and naturally) is by faith. You must labor in faith, not in works or deeds. By the end of this book, not only will you get your bread, but you will get the entire loaf.

In Labor with Hope, Gloria Furman helps women see topics such as pregnancy, infertility, miscarriage, birth pain, and new life in the framework of the larger biblical narrative, infusing cosmic meaning into their personal experience by exploring how they point to eternal realities. Book excerpt: An urgent manifesto and a dramatic memoir of awakening, this is the story of revolutionary love. Finalist for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize • “In a world stricken with fear and turmoil, Valarie Kaur shows us how to summon our deepest wisdom.”—Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat Pray Love How do we love in a time of rage? How do we fix a broken world while not breaking ourselves? Valarie Kaur—renowned Sikh activist, filmmaker, and civil rights lawyer—describes revolutionary love as the call of our time, a radical, joyful practice that extends in three directions: to others, to our opponents, and to ourselves. It enjoins us to see no stranger but instead look at others and say: You are part of me I do not yet know. Starting from that place of wonder, the world begins to change: It is a practice that can transform a relationship, a community, a culture, even a nation. Kaur takes readers through her own riveting journey—as a brown girl growing up in California farmland finding her place in the world; as a young adult galvanized by the murders of Sikhs after 9/11; as a law student fighting injustices in American prisons and on Guantánamo Bay; as an activist working with communities recovering from xenophobic attacks; and as a woman trying to heal from her own experiences with police violence and sexual assault. Drawing from the wisdom of sages, scientists, and activists, Kaur reclaims love as an active, public, and revolutionary force that creates new possibilities for ourselves, our communities, and our world. See No Stranger helps us imagine new ways of being with each other—and with ourselves—so that together we can begin to build the world we want to see.

Book excerpt: Women are valued for their ability to bear children in many cultures. The birth process, though supposedly the most painful experience of a woman’s life, is seen as a necessary evil to achieve the end goal of children and motherhood. And yet, in the face of a typically masculinized Christianity that nevertheless professes that women are equally created in the image of God, shouldn’t childbirth—a uniquely feminine experience—itself shape Christian women’s souls and teach them about the heart of the God they love and follow? Drawing on her own experience of giving birth and motherhood—and the conflicting assumptions attached to them, by Christians and the culture at large—Aubry G. Smith presents a richly scriptural exploration of common conceptions about pregnancy and childbirth that will not only help mothers and soon-to-be mothers understand how to think biblically about birth, but also walks them through how to put the ideas into practice in their own lives. Along the way, she shows all readers how to see God’s own experience of the birth process—and how childbirth leads to a deeper understanding of the gospel overall.

Work is an inevitable factor of human existence, and yet we do not have appropriate theological resources to help us reflect on its nature and meaning in light of Christian understanding and contemporary American culture. How can we as Christians understand our work as a dimension of our faith?

Just outside Seattle, an unlikely alliance of Sea-Tac Airport workers, union and community activists, and clergy staged face-to-face confrontations with corporate leaders to unite a diverse, largely immigrant workforce in a struggle over power between airport workers and business and political elites. Digging deep into the root causes of poverty wages, Rosenblum gives a blunt assessment of the daunting problems facing unions today. Beyond $15 provides an inspirational blueprint for a powerful, all-inclusive labor movement and is a call for workers to reclaim their power in the new economy.
