Book Milosz and the Problem of Evil

Download or read book Milosz and the Problem of Evil written by Lukasz Tischner and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-10 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While scholars have chronicled Czesław Miłosz’s engagement with religious belief, no previous book-length treatment has focused on his struggles with theodicy in both poetry and thought. Miłosz wrestled with the problem of believing in a just God given the powerful evidence to the contrary in the natural world as he observed it and in the horrors of World War II and its aftermath in Poland. Rather than attempt to survey Miłosz’s vast oeuvre, Łukasz Tischner focuses on several key works—The Land of Ulro, The World, The Issa Valley, A Treatise on Morals, A Treatise on Poetry, and From the Rising of the Sun—carefully tracing the development of Miłosz’s moral arguments, especially in relation to the key texts that influenced him, among them the Bible, the Gnostic writings, and the works of Blake, Hegel, Kierkegaard, and Schopenhauer. The result is a book that examines Miłosz as both a thinker and an artist, shedding new light on all aspects of his oeuvre.

Book Apocalypse Jukebox

  • Author : David Janssen
  • Publisher : ReadHowYouWant.com
  • Release : 2011-04-25
  • ISBN : 145961917X
  • Pages : 510 pages

Download or read book Apocalypse Jukebox written by David Janssen and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2011-04-25 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its indefinite beginnings through its broad commercialization and endless reinterpretation, American rock-and-roll music has been preoccupied with an end-of-the-world mentality that extends through the whole of American popular music. In Apocalypse Jukebox, Edward Whitelock and David Janssen trace these connections through American music genres, uncovering a mix of paranoia and hope that characterizes so much of the nation's history. From the book's opening scene, set in the American South during a terrifying 1833 meteor shower, the sense of doom is both palpable and inescapable; a deep foreboding that shadows every subsequent development in American popular music and, as Whitelock and Janssen contend, stands as a key to understanding and explicating America itself. Whitelock and Janssen examine the diversity of apocalyptic influences within North American recorded music, focusing in particular upon a number of influential performers, including Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, John Coltrane, Devo, R.E.M., Sleater-Kinney, and Green Day. In Apocalypse Jukebox, Whitelock and Janssen reveal apocalypse as a permanent and central part of the American character while establishing rock-and-roll as a true reflection of that character.

Book excerpt: In a world where fairytales keep coming to life, there’s a bureau dedicated to helping the victims caught up in the Grimm Effect. But sometimes even those investigators fall prey to a happily ever after… The big, bad wolf is about to go down. Through sheer determination—and a whole lot of stubbornness—I, Blanche Hood, managed to evade the Red-Cap curse. Unlike my mom, I didn’t fall for the huntsman or get eaten by the wolf, but I did gain a purpose. I became an agent for the Fairytale Bureau. My job? Countering the ugly side of the Grimm Effect. My latest case involves a string of murders by a wolf, but I keep getting distracted by my neighbor. I will resist his growly voice. I will not notice the way his muscles bulge. I don’t have time for romance because I need to focus on my job, especially since the perpetrator is taunting me. The killer is asking for a showdown, and he’s going to get it. He won’t be able to resist when I don my red hood to act as bait. Things don’t quite go as planned. Turns out the wolf was under my nose this entire time. By the time I discover the truth, it’s too late. Too late to lament the fact I was played. Too late to regret what could have been, and when I foolishly walk into a trap, it will take a miracle to save me. But everyone knows the Brothers Grimm stories don’t always have happily-ever-afters. If only love truly could break the curse.

Book Apocalypse The Transformation of Earth

Download or read book Apocalypse The Transformation of Earth written by Friedrich Benesch and published by SteinerBooks. This book was released on 2015-08-01 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Revelation of St. John, spiritual worlds and spiritual entities appear both in images of the sensory world and in images of the mineral realm. This book disusses these two sides of world manifestation. It is often argued that the images of St. John's Revelations are intended in a purely symbolic way. If this is so, the mineral appears as a symbol for something of a soul-like and spiritual nature. The Revelator however, did not see symbols, but rather realities; even a symbol can be genuine only if something of the reality for which it stands shines through. It must, in a real way, be inwardly identical with what it intends, the essence from which it stems. Thus it must arise from the same reality; otherwise it contains no meaning. The images of the minerals in the Apocalypse are just as much reality as the minerals are on Earth. Neither is essential; both are simply manifestations of something essential. Hence, both are truly apocalyptic—the mineral we hold in our hand and the image we hold in our mind. They reveal themselves mutually. This book juxtaposes the objects of sensory appearance and natural-scientific research with sayings from the Revelation of St. John to express the joint background of the appearances. When we connect one with the other, it can lead to an encounter with the essence. This is an “esoteric mineralogy.” Friedrich Benesch enables a renewed encounter between the human being and mineral being, from which essence and future can then shine out. Anyone wanting to look more deeply into the Book of Revelations should read this beautifully illustrated, unique work on its meaning and its significance for both today and the future of humankind and the Earth.

Book Apocalypse Child

Download or read book Apocalypse Child written by Flor Edwards and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first thirteen years of her life, Flor Edwards grew up in the Children of God. The group's nomadic existence was based on the belief that, as God's chosen people, they would be saved in the impending apocalypse that would envelop the rest of the world in 1993. Flor would be thirteen years old. The group's charismatic leader, Father David, kept the family on the move, from Los Angeles to Bangkok to Chicago, where they would eventually disband, leaving Flor to make sense of the foreign world of mainstream society around her. Apocalypse Child is a cathartic journey through Flor's memories of growing up within a group with unconventional views on education, religion, and sex. Whimsically referring to herself as a real life Kimmy Schmidt, Edwards's clear-eyed memoir is a story of survival in a childhood lived on the fringes.

Book Fairy Tale TV

Download or read book Fairy Tale TV written by Jill Terry Rudy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-02 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise and accessible critical introduction examines the world of popular fairy-tale television, tracing how fairy tales and their social and cultural implications manifest within series, television events, anthologies, and episodes, and as freestanding motifs. Providing a model of televisual analysis, Rudy and Greenhill emphasize that fairy-tale longevity in general, and particularly on TV, results from malleability—morphing from extremely complex narratives to the simple quotation of a name (like Cinderella) or phrase (like "happily ever after")—as well as its perennial value as a form that is good to think with. The global reach and popularity of fairy tales is reflected in the book’s selection of diverse examples from genres such as political, lifestyle, reality, and science fiction TV. With a select mediagraphy, discussion questions, and detailed bibliography for further study, this book is an ideal guide for students and scholars of television studies, popular culture, and media studies, as well as dedicated fairy-tale fans.

With resources scarce and law enforcement nonexistent, the normally decent citizens of the once well-to-do area turn on each other. Then the militias arrive — men once looked on as "kooks" and outsiders, but who now have the military resources to claim the area farming infrastructure as their own. And with their ranks swollen by the desperate, they don't stop there. United against the tyranny by Reverend Jacob Craft — a local minister and veteran of the war in Afghanistan — the people of Amsterdam fight back. But with the federal, state, and local governments eerily silent, a new form of leadership is needed and The Amsterdam Directorate is born. Today - Reverend Jacob Craft awakens to a brilliant flash in the Eastern sky, the sight of a fiery mushroom cloud on the horizon, and a world ensnared in darkness by the failure of a susceptible power grid. With everything he has worked to build threatened, Jacob rushes to find answers. But an old enemy waits in the darkness for a second chance. Can Jacob keep the peace and defend his friends from a madman's attack or will the fragile community be torn apart from within and consumed by forces from without? ★★★★★ "Slick, well-executed!" - Steven Konkoly (author of The Jakarta Pandemic and The Perseid Collapse series)

Book One Hundred Apocalypses and Other Apocalypses

Download or read book One Hundred Apocalypses and Other Apocalypses written by Lucy Corin and published by McSweeney's. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lucy Corin's "eye popping, enlightening read" (Publishers Weekly), now in paperback. At the heart of Lucy Corin’s dazzling collection are one hundred apocalypses: visions of loss and destruction, vexation and crisis, revelation and revolution, sometimes only a few lines long. In these haunting and wickedly funny stories, an apocalypse might come in the form of the end of a relationship or the end of the world, but they all expose the tricky landscape of our longing for a clean slate. In three longer stories, contemporary American life is playfully, if disturbingly, distorted: the rite of passage for adolescent girls involves choosing the madman who will accompany them into adulthood; California burns to the ground while, on the east coast, life carries on; and a soldier returns home broke from war to encounter a witch who extends a dangerous offer. At once mournful and explosively energetic, One Hundred Apocalypses and Other Apocalypses is "deeply rooted in the politics and upheaval of our times" (Lambda Literary).
