Book excerpt: Getting banished from the magical island of Elysium was the best thing that ever happened to me.Sure, I was born a Faerie princess, but life in the Fae territory is not kind to women-especially those born to power. So I may not have done anything wrong, but when I was twelve and the Oracle blamed me and the five heirs to the other territories for the Darkness spreading throughout the island, I was happy to be cast out.Maybe I've never truly adjusted to the mortal realm, but at least here I don't have to worry about having my magic torn from me, or having my life given over to someone else's control. So when Devryn Ryder, Lord of the Hunter territory, shows up claiming he's my fated mate here to take me home to Elysium, it isn't exactly a dream come true. Especially not when he tells me the Oracle now believes that I and the other heirs must return to fight the Darkness, and Devryn is destined to stand at my side.It may be less than ideal, but Devryn and I are both practical people. He wants to lead his territory-which he can't do if the Elders punish him for failing to return with me-and despite everything, I want to return to Elysium, so long as I never set foot on Faerie land again. So we come to an agreement-I'll return with him, and he'll ensure no Fae ever touches me again. What could go wrong with a platonic bargain between two heirs? We're born to make these kinds of matches. Unfortunately, my fated mate is tall, dark, and sexy as hell, and keeping my hands off him proves more difficult than I'd anticipated...especially since he seems to be having the same problem where I'm concerned.Throw in the very real threat of the Darkness, and I start to wonder if staying in the mortal realm wouldn't have been the wiser decision.

Book Mapping The Faerie Queene

Download or read book Mapping The Faerie Queene written by Wayne Erickson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the Faerie Queene's setting, examining Spenser's quest structures and his ideas about epic, romance, and history. Critics almost invariably treat Spenser's Faeryland as coextensive with the world of the poem, but this is not the case; rather, Faeryland is part of an epic cosmos reaching from heaven and the abode of the classical deities to demonic underground realms. Spenser situates Faeryland within a specific spatial and temporal terrestrial geography in which locations outside Faeryland represent various heroic settings in political history. The politico-historical world built around Faeryland is ripe for analysis by contemporary historicist critics. Spenser uses political geography, in conjunction with the time-inclusive medium of Faeryland, to coordinate several transhistorical quests that create a pattern of temporal mediations among sixth-century British, 16th-century English, and biblical and prophetic versions of history. He juxtaposes chronicle history, empirical historiography, and cultural myth while manipulating genre to create a world capable of accommodating his grand romantic epic design. In mapping the world of The Faerie Queene, the book provides a widened context for Spenser's quest structures, a significant contribution to the study of the poem's relation to history, and a new perspective from which to view Spenser's debts to classical epic, Italian romantic epic, and his native medieval inheritance. Book The Religion of the Ancient Celts

Download or read book The Religion of the Ancient Celts written by John Arnott MacCulloch and published by . This book was released on 1911 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scant records remain of the ancient Celtic religion beyond some eleventh- and twelfth-century written material from the Irish Celts and the great Welsh document Mabinogion. This classic study by a distinguished scholar, builds not only upon the surviving texts but also upon folk customs derived from the rituals of the old cults. A masterly and extremely readable survey, it offers a reconstruction of the essentials of Celtic paganism: fascinating glimpses into primitive forms of worship involving rites centered on rivers and wells, trees and plants, and animals; and examinations of evidence from Celtic burial mounds to explore beliefs and customs related to the culture of the dead, including rites of rebirth and transmigration.
