Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid growth of telecommunications has led to a demand for convergence of voice, video and data integration over traditional data networks. This has strained the current packet-switched networks which are not very well-suited for voice and video applications. Quality-of-service-aware, high-speed packet switches are being designed to alleviate the problems in traditional networks. The key motivation of this thesis was to analyze scheduling algorithms in order to guarantee Quality of Service for high-speed packet networks, particularly for voice applications. A behavioral model of the Agere Network Processor's scheduler, Sched-650 was implemented in C. Using this simulator, various options to modify scheduling algorithms and understand their implementation issues were analyzed. The results were then used to modify Agere's Java-based simulator. The Active List scheduling algorithm was modified with different scheduling policies to understand its effect on bandwidth sharing and jitter of different traffic flows. The fairness of a scheduling algorithm was determined based on the bandwidth allocated to all the competing flows. Experiments were also conducted to study the impact of varying packet size and number of flows for the different scheduling algorithms.

Book excerpt: To support the myriad of envisioned communication products of the future, there is a need to develop a network infrastructure that can provide larger bandwidth, with better control of quality of service (QoS). However, with increasing demand for applications running over packet networks, congestion at the intermediate nodes (e.g., routers and switches) can be a serious problem. Consequences include long delays, large delay variation and high packet loss rates. Different solutions requiring varying levels of modification to the currently used algorithms have been proposed both for responsive (e.g., TCP) and unresponsive (e.g., UDP) protocols. However, most of the solutions are either too complicated to implement in real life or not general enough to be applicable to an arbitrary network topology. In this thesis, we investigate two mechanisms - active queue management (AQM), and scheduling - that can improve QoS in the packet networks. AQM techniques attempt to prevent congestion and regulate the queue length by sending congestion signals (i.e., dropping and/or marking packets) in a proactive manner, which would eventually cause the senders to decrease their sending rates. We use an analytic model derived for TCP in the literature to develop an AQM scheme that not only controls the queue length at the intermediate nodes but also distributes the resources fairly between the users. We present two different schemes that have different levels of complexity and performance. We also propose a distributed networking scheme that improves the performance of our new AQM algorithms. Although AQM schemes work well with responsive protocols such as TCP, the performance degrades for unresponsive protocols since unresponsive protocols do not change their packet sending rate in response to the congestion notifications sent by the network. Book excerpt: Abstract: "While Packet Fair Queueing (PFQ) algorithms provide both bounded delay and fairness in wired networks, they cannot be applied directly to wireless networks. The key difficulty is that in wireless networks sessions can experience location-dependent channel errors. This may lead to situations in which a session receives significantly less service than it is supposed to, while another receives more. This results in large discrepancies between the sessions' virtual times, making it difficult to provide both delay-guarantees and fairness simultaneously. Our contribution is twofold. First, we identify a set of properties, called Channel-condition Independent Fair (CIF), that a Packet Fair Queueing algorithm should have in a wireless environment: (1) delay and throughput guarantees for error-free sessions, (2) long term fairness for error sessions, (3) short term fairness for error-free sessions, and (4) graceful degradation for sessions that have received excess service. Second, we present a methodology for adapting PFQ algorithms for wireless networks and we apply this methodology to derive a novel algorithm based on Start-time Fair Queueing, called Channel-condition Independent packet Fair Queueing (CIF-Q), that achieves all the above properties. To evaluate the algorithm we provide both theoretical analysis and simulation results."
