Book Detection and Considerations of Corrosion Problems of Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe

Download or read book Detection and Considerations of Corrosion Problems of Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe written by PS. Rothman and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP) is constructed by circumferentially winding a high strength steel wire, under tension, around a concrete core containing a sheet steel cylinder, which serves as a watertight membrane. The service life of such pipe is generally determined by the ability of this steel prestressing wire to retain its integrity under tension. Corrosion of the steel wire results in pitting, embrittlement, or the dissolution of the iron with a corresponding reduction in cross-sectional area. The result is degradation of the physical strength of the high tensile wire and possible failure of the prestressed concrete cylinder pipe through this mechanism. Pipe affected by this failure mode does not develop leaks as in the case of the steel pipe, but bursts catastrophically. Failure is usually attributed to "wire breaks," not specifically to corrosion.

Book Performance of Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe PCCP in Water Applications

Download or read book Performance of Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe PCCP in Water Applications written by Rahul Manda and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of water pipes field data is of great importance as it has a significant impact on society and the environment. These failures also have an overall impact on the financial burden of the water utilities. This thesis consists of a detailed literature review on the previous studies conducted on prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP) performance. Moreover, a detailed national-level survey was conducted by the Center for Underground Infrastructure Research and Education (CUIRE) at UT Arlington to gather and analyze additional field performance data for large diameter pressure pipe including prestressed concrete cylinder pipe. Specifically, this thesis evaluates the field performance of PCCP, which is one of the most conventional and extensively used large diameter (24 in. and larger) rigid pipes in the U.S. water pipeline industry. This thesis explores different failure parameters, such as pipe age, diameter, manufacturing process, type of joints and performance effectiveness of PCCP.

Book Analysis of Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipes for Rehabilitation

Download or read book Analysis of Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipes for Rehabilitation written by Yong-Jei Lee and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prestressed Concrete Cylindrical Pipe (PCCP) has been widely used for the distribution of water. As it deteriorates, structural failures have been experienced and finding repairing methods becomes one of the important issues in the civil engineering fields. As one of the repairing efforts, a new approach using Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) has been applied. Recently, an idea of trenchless rehabilitation of water pipelines using FRP composites and innovated robot technology was proposed and is being developed by UC Irvine research team. As this emerging technique is being developed, a need for an analysis method that can tell how much FRP is required for a certain deterioration level has arisen. Currently no analytical tool is available for predicting structural performance of PCCP with FRP rehabilitation. The main purpose of this study is to provide analysis and design methods of deteriorated PCCP used for communal, industrial, and agricultural systems under internal pressure and various external-loading conditions. Yield-redistribution model is developed for analysis of the internal pressure that is thought to be the most severe loading case. Mono-layer model and multi-layer model are developed for analysis of general loading cases. The sooner is a convenient way to apply for the design procedure and the latter is for more comprehensive analysis. Those three models are compared to finite element models and showed similar results. It is found that the degree of prestressing wire damages is a main factor deciding pipe capacity. It is also found that the FRP thickness and attachment angle is another important factor affecting the pipe capacities. The causes of deterioration like buckling, debonding, concrete crushing, radial tension, and long-term loading are considered to develop a design tool set. The design procedure will give suitable quantitative ranges of reinforcing materials. Soil-pipe interaction is another topic to understand the behavior of the buried PCCP. The arching effect on the PCCP as the pipe loses intact stiffness will be shown. A method to calculate the horizontal deflection of pipe with certain soil condition is proposed. Finite element model is used to verify the analysis results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a selection of the author‘s firsthand experience with incidents related to reinforced and prestressed concrete structures, helping readers gain an understanding of errors that can occur in order to avoid making them. He includes mistakes discovered at the design stage, ones that led to failures, and some that involved partial structure collapse all of which required remedial action to ensure safety. The book focuses on specific incidents that occurred at various points in the construction process, including mistakes related to structural misunderstanding, extrapolation of codes of practice, and poor construction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of the Pipelines 2011 Conference, held in Seattle, Washington, July 23-27, 2011. Sponsored by the Pipeline Division of ASCE. This collection contains 135 peer-reviewed technical papers that discuss new solutions to some of the most critical infrastructure issues involving pipelines. The U.S. water and wastewater infrastructure systems are continuing to deteriorate. The recent economic downturn has increased the gap between current and required levels of funding. These serious financial constraints highlight the urgent need for creative and innovative solutions to improve our water and wastewater infrastructure systems. From the technical perspective, cost effective materials, proper planning, new design methods, innovative construction technologies, and advanced condition assessment technologies must be more aggressively developed, tested, and introduced to the industry. From the management perspective, optimal use of financial resources, smart and carefully crafted decision making processes on maintenance, rehabilitation and replacement activities must be made available, applied by and used by water and wastewater infrastructure agencies.
