Book The Rhetoric of the New Political Documentary

Download or read book The Rhetoric of the New Political Documentary written by Thomas W Benson and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2008-05-23 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rhetoric of the New Political Documentary explores the most visible and volatile element in the 2004 presidential campaign—the partisan documentary film. This collection of original critical essays by leading scholars and critics—including Shawn J. and Trevor Parry-Giles, Jennifer L. Borda, and Martin J. Medhurst—analyzes a selection of political documentaries that appeared during the 2004 election season. The editors examine the new political documentary with the tools of rhetorical criticism, combining close textual analysis with a consideration of the historical context and the production and reception of the films. The essays address the distinctive rhetoric of the new political documentary, with the films typically having been shot with relatively low budgets, in video, and using interviews and stock footage rather than observation of uncontrolled behavior. The quality was often good enough and interest was sufficiently intense that the films were shown in theaters and on television, which provided legitimacy and visibility before they were released soon afterwards on DVD and VHS and marketed on the Internet. The volume reviews such films as Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11; two refutations of Moore’s film, Fahrenhype 9/11 and Celsius 41.11;Unprecedented: The 2000 Presidential Election; and George W. Bush: Faith in the White House—films that experimented with a variety of angles and rhetorics, from a mix of comic disparagement and earnest confrontation to various emulations of traditional news and documentary voices. The Rhetoric of the New Political Documentary represents the continued transformation of American political discourse in a partisan and contentious time and showcases the independent voices and the political power brokers that struggled to find new ways to debate the status quo and employ surrogate “independents” to create a counterrhetoric.

Book excerpt: September 11th, 2001 remains a focal point of American consciousness, a site demanding ongoing excavation, a site at which to mark before and after "everything" changed. In ways both real and intangible the entire sequence of events of that day continues to resonate in an endlessly proliferating aftermath of meanings that continue to evolve. Presenting a collection of analyses by an international body of scholars that examines America's recent history, this book focuses on popular culture as a profound discursive site of anxiety and discussion about 9/11 and demystifies the day's events in order to contextualize them into a historically grounded series of narratives that recognizes the complex relations of a globalized world. Essays in Reframing 9/11 share a collective drive to encourage new and original approaches for understanding the issues both within and beyond the official political rhetoric of the events of the "The Global War on Terror" and issues of national security.

Book Liberty Means Freedom for All

Download or read book Liberty Means Freedom for All written by Steven H. Propp and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Anderson has just graduated from CSU Stentoria, with his degree in Political Science. It's an election year, and as a young "progressive" in California who has been raised by equally progressive parents, he is very much concerned with the political issues currently being discussed in the mass media. A chance encounter with a fellow graduate named Kelly Kelso, however, shakes up his sett led view of the world. He is challenged to examine the rising number of alternatives to the two-party system presented by "third party" movements such as the Libertarian Party and the Green Party, and is forced to acknowledge that there is far more to politics than simply Democrat versus Republican, and liberal versus conservative. Thomas delves energetically into not only the growing Libertarian movement, but the free market perspective of the Austrian School of economics, as well as the rigid yet compelling view of Ayn Rand's philosophy of Objectivism. His explorations grow wider, now encompassing the Tea Party movement and the Christi an Right; tax resisters and gun rights advocates; survivalists and militia members; anarchists, communists, and Democratic Socialists; as well as the Occupy Wall Street movement. He debates the radical environmental views of animal welfare and animal rights advocates, and challenges opponents of corporate globalism as well as deniers of global warming, as he struggles to reformulate and articulate his own developing beliefs, while coping with a sea of conflicting ideas and opposition. But this abstract political theory is brought into sharp encounter with concrete political reality, when Thomas hears a news report of an armed conflict with authorities taking place just outside of town, involving someone with whom he has become emotionally involved...

Book Troubling Masculinities

Download or read book Troubling Masculinities written by Glen Donnar and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2020-07-23 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Troubling Masculinities: Terror, Gender, and Monstrous Others in American Film Post-9/11 is the first multigenre study of representations of masculinity following the emergence of violent terror as a plot element in American cinema after September 11, 2001. Across a broad range of subgenres—including disaster melodrama, monster movies, postapocalyptic science fiction, discovered footage and home invasion horror, action-thrillers, and frontier westerns—author Glen Donnar examines the impact of “terror-Others,” from Arab terrorists to giant monsters, especially in relation to cinematic representations in earlier periods of national turmoil. Donnar demonstrates that the reassertion of masculinity and American national identity in post-9/11 cinema repeatedly unravels across genres. Taking up critical arguments about Hollywood’s attempts to resolve male crisis through Orientalizing figures of terror, he shows how this failure reflects an inability to effectively extinguish the threat or frightening difference of terror. The heroes in these movies are unable to heal themselves or restore order, often becoming as destructive as the threats they are supposed to be fighting. Donnar concludes that interrelated anxieties about masculinity and nationhood continue to affect contemporary American cinema and politics. By showing how persistent these cultural fears are, the volume offers an important counternarrative to this supposedly unprecedented moment in American history.

Book Michael Moore and the Rhetoric of Documentary

Download or read book Michael Moore and the Rhetoric of Documentary written by Thomas W Benson and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2015-04-27 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not afraid to tackle provocative topics in American culture, from gun violence and labor policies to terrorism and health care, Michael Moore has earned both applause and invective in his career as a documentarian. In such polarizing films as Bowling for Columbine, Fahrenheit 9/11, and Sicko, Moore has established a unique voice of radical nostalgia for progressivism, and in doing so has become one of the most recognized documentary filmmakers of all time. In the first in-depth study of Moore’s feature-length documentary films, editors Thomas W. Benson and Brian J. Snee have gathered leading rhetoric scholars to examine the production, rhetorical appeals, and audience reception of these films. Contributors critique the films primarily as modes of public argument and political art. Each essay is devoted to one of Moore’s films and traces in detail how each film invites specific audience responses. Michael Moore and the Rhetoric of Documentary reveals not only the art, the argument, and the emotional appeals of Moore’s documentaries but also how these films have revolutionized the genre of documentary filmmaking.

Book How to Fast Forward Changes in Our Lives Using Facebook

Download or read book How to Fast Forward Changes in Our Lives Using Facebook written by Donald A. Dahlin D.C. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-05-21 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can We Restore American Standards? The truth is America has been systematically corrupted by several past Governments; there are Valid DVDS by PBS and other sources that you will find in this book to explain how this came about. But, it goes much earlier than that! It goes back into the 1800s when Thinking men considered ancient beliefs of the Veda, Buddhism, Jesus Christ: saving our souls, and Darwins Evolution, - trying to confront Reality. Germany: a forerunner in science, had Wilhelm Wundt a psychologist and a leader with a new understanding of the reality of Darwin and evolution declared in a party of interested persons that Man is only an animal and has no soul that can be demonstrated; the same with God and Religion; both of them are the myths of the old people; man is an evolved chimpanzee and should be treated like an animal with a brain and nervous system, and to be observed for abnormal behavior and treated as such. Russian observers agreed and together with Germany formed the National Education (NEA) of teachers, and the birth of psychiatry. There is more but it is in my book, and the source is a well-distinguished school teacher: Samuel L.Blumenfeld and author of: N.E.A. Trojan Horse in American Education The First Full-Length Expose of The National Education Association. 1949-1984. Since then, American psychiatry has invaded our schools, colleges, universities, State and Federal Governments and you will learn how and what they did to our Country. They have sought to destroy our education, religion, morals, field of medicine, the laws and our courtsand today we have illiteracy, mental illness, drug addiction, adultery, living together without marriage (responsibility), prostitution, mass shootings of family, teachers and friends, and often themselves. And etc. Again, I repeat: Can We Restore American Standards? If I provide you with all the tools or rsources that wlll help you do the job would you be willing to become a Problem Solver? A person desiring to be a Problem Solver would be dealing with his/her environment with one or more persons and also promoting the IDEA through his/her Facebook connections so it could become world-wideperhaps like telepathy. But, read the two pages of the Contents and see for yourself the huge scope of help you will receive for common problems of illiteracy, what causes disease, how to attain optimum health and happiness. The persons you help, your children, and their future generations will all appreciate your help. So will I.
