Book Motivations for Service learning Among Family and Consumer Sciences College Faculty

Download or read book Motivations for Service learning Among Family and Consumer Sciences College Faculty written by Madhumita Banerjee and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trying to understand connections between Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) and service-learning could improve the implementation process of this pedagogy in FCS courses. According to Giles and Eyler (1998), identifying ways by which service-learning can enhance subject matter learning is the first of their top ten unanswered questions in service-learning research. The primary objective of this study was to examine characteristics of FCS collegiate faculty who do and do not incorporate service-learning in their teaching, determine their teaching efficacy levels and dominant teaching perspectives, examine their perceptions about service-learning as an effective teaching strategy within FCS, and identify the factors that motivate and deter FCS faculty's use of service-learning. Survey results from 375 FCS faculty members in institutions of higher education across the United States confirm the belief that service-learning can be an effective tool for learning and teaching within FCS. Almost 60% of the FCS faculty reported to have implemented service-learning in their teaching. Both service-learning and non service-learning faculty, in general, had high teaching efficacy levels. The dominant teaching practice for all faculty was Reflective-Ethical, irrespective of whether they were service-learning or non service-learning faculty. Service-learning faculty received encouragement from department chairpersons and other colleagues in the department. Advice from colleagues and attendance at professional organizations and conferences provided faculty with useful instructional support. Student outcomes motivated faculty most in their decisions to incorporate service-learning. Concerns related to time, logistics, and funding; reward structure; and inability to use service-learning effectively were reported to be potential factors that might cause faculty to discontinue their service-learning efforts. For non service-learning faculty, issues related to time, logistics, and funding; and curricular and pedagogical concerns, were the greatest deterrents to using service-learning.

Download or read book Family and Consumer Sciences Field Faculty s Perceptions of North Carolina Cooperative Extension s Department of Family and Consumer Sciences Orientation Training written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this descriptive-correlational study was to determine North Carolina Cooperative Extension (NCCE) Family and Consumer Science (FCS) field faculty's perceptions of the NCCE FCS departmental orientation training for new NCCE FCS field faculty. It also examined relationships that existed between personal and professional attributes and the perceptions of the NCCE FCS departmental orientation training. The population of the study was 118 NCCE FCS field faculty, and a census was used in gathering the data. A web-based/ mail questionnaire was developed to measure the NCCE FCS field faculty's perceptions of "the availability and or accessibility of ", "applicability of content" and "importance of content" in the NCCE FCS departmental orientation training. The questionnaire was reviewed by NCCE county directors with FCS programming responsibilities for face validity. Cronbach alpha was used to establish reliability. A final response rate of 79% was achieved. The data were analyzed utilizing the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), Davis (1971) conventions and NUD•IST qualitative data analysis software. The study revealed that NCCE FCS field faculty considered the NCCE FCS departmental orientation training to be beneficial. The respondents concluded that the NCCE FCS departmental orientation be a combination of face-to-face and on-line training.

Book Academic Motherhood

Download or read book Academic Motherhood written by Kelly Ward and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-31 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Motherhood tells the story of over one hundred women who are both professors and mothers and examines how they navigated their professional lives at different career stages. Kelly Ward and Lisa Wolf-Wendel base their findings on a longitudinal study that asks how women faculty on the tenure track manage work and family in their early careers (pre-tenure) when their children are young (under the age of five), and then again in mid-career (post-tenure) when their children are older. The women studied work in a range of institutional settings—research universities, comprehensive universities, liberal arts colleges, and community colleges—and in a variety of disciplines, including the sciences, the humanities, and the social sciences. Much of the existing literature on balancing work and family presents a pessimistic view and offers cautionary tales of what to avoid and how to avoid it. In contrast, the goal of Academic Motherhood is to help tenure track faculty and the institutions at which they are employed “make it work.” Writing for administrators, prospective and current faculty as well as scholars, Ward and Wolf-Wendel bring an element of hope and optimism to the topic of work and family in academe. They provide insight and policy recommendations that support faculty with children and offer mechanisms for problem-solving at personal, departmental, institutional, and national levels.

Book Remaking Home Economics

Download or read book Remaking Home Economics written by Sharon Y. Nickols and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An interdisciplinary effort of scholars from history, women's studies, and family and consumer sciences, Remaking Home Economics covers the field's history of opening career opportunities for women and responding to domestic and social issues. Calls to "bring back home economics" miss the point that it never went away, say Sharon Y. Nickols and Gwen Kay--home economics has been remaking itself, in study and practice, for more than a century. These new essays, relevant for a variety of fields--history, women's studies, STEM, and family and consumer sciences itself--take both current and historical perspectives on defining issues including home economics philosophy, social responsibility, and public outreach; food and clothing; gender and race in career settings; and challenges to the field's identity and continuity. Home economics history offers a rich case study for exploring common ground between the broader culture and this highly gendered profession. This volume describes the resourcefulness of past scholars and professionals who negotiated with cultural and institutional constraints to produce their work, as well as the innovations of contemporary practitioners who continue to change the profession, including its name and identity. The widespread urge to reclaim domestic skills, along with a continual need for fresh ways to address obesity, elder abuse, household debt, and other national problems affirms the field's vitality and relevance. This volume will foster dialogue both inside and outside the academy about the changes that have remade (and are remaking) family and consumer sciences.
