Book excerpt: The general purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between selected demographics and community college faculty attitudes toward distance learning. Other interest included faculty development in distance learning. The population for this study was faculty members from three Maryland community colleges, one rural, one suburban and one urban. This descriptive study utilized both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. A survey instrument and semi-structured interviews were used as a means for collecting data. The survey and interview data were used to compare perceptions among varying levels of faculty based on age, gender, educational level, and years of service. The findings provided insight into faculty views about distance learning training at their own institutions. The research study was designed utilizing Gaff's (1975) conceptual framework for staff development in education, which included motivational and attitudinal variables that affected faculty effectiveness. Attitude theory as discussed by several theorists including Eagly, Chaiken, Rokeach, and Maultsby, were theoretical perspectives used to explain and interpret the fact that attitudes made actions as well as ideas instantly feel right or wrong without conscious analysis. The major finding from this study suggested that male faculty had more positive attitudes toward distance learning than female faculty. The three key factors for faculty participation in distance learning were found to be training, extra pay and extra time. Implications for faculty development were identified as a result of the study's findings. -- Abstract.

Book excerpt: Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, online learning was a contested issue within higher education. Advocates of online higher education saw it as a way to make college more accessible and affordable and bring high-quality education to those who might not be able to attend in-person classes. However, many faculty were skeptical or reluctant to teach online and in particular expressed concerns about increased workload, inferior learning outcomes, cheating, and losing connection with students. When the pandemic began, some argued that it would accelerate the acceptance of online teaching by faculty, while others argued the pandemic would reveal the weaknesses and limitations of online teaching. Overall, this study shows more support for the former than the latter. A plurality (49.3%) of faculty surveyed report that following the pivot to emergency remote teaching they have a more positive view of online education while 27.5% report no change and only 22.9% have a more negative view. Further, 55.1% report that they are more likely to want to teach online when their campus reopens. However, many faculty who expressed a more favorable view of online education also expressed reservations, for example that certain courses do not work well online or that certain students do not do well online. The concerns cited in the pre-pandemic literature including cheating, lack of connection and engagement, and increased workload for faculty all surfaced in this study. These are complex and challenging issues that can never be fully solved but should not be ignored if online higher education is to reach its full potential.

Decades of qualitative study indicate that a majority of faculty continue to regard online education as inferior to traditional classroom learning. The growth of online learning has spurred the development of educational technologies and innovative pedagogical approaches to foster immersive online learning experiences. As faculty venture into this new educational paradigm, whether by choice or force, their attitudes about online education are slowly becoming more positive. The purpose of this study was to assess the attitudes of faculty and establish user profiles based on their innovativeness with regard to teaching with technology and online experience. These profiles were framed using Rogers' Diffusion of Innovations theory (2003) using cluster analysis. The results of this study indicate that faculty adoption-diffusion profiles are correlational to their attitudes toward online education. In addition, this study determined that online teaching experience is the strongest predictor of faculty attitudes and adoption-diffusion classifications. The results of this study suggest that institutions would benefit in analyzing their faculty innovation classifications to inform policy, technology purchasing decisions, and development offerings.
