Book The Locus of Formal Decision Making in Christian College Coalition Institutions

This book was released on 2019-05-31 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The problem was to determine the perceptions of those involved about the locus of formal decision making relative to academic, student affairs, development, and administration decisions for Coalition colleges. Answers were sought to questions about which specific position incumbents/units were perceived to be involved in making and participating in making decisions, and differences in perceptions based on respondent role (trustees, administration, administration/faculty, faculty) and on level of involvement (no involvement, provides information, recommends, makes decision). Data were obtained by means of a decision point analysis instrument from 59 of the 69 institutions with 293 returns. Analysis of variance was utilized to determine differences in perceptions. Faculty members, academic deans, and presidents were perceived to be major decision makers in academics; deans of students and presidents in student affairs; trustees, presidents, and business officers in development; and trustees and presidents in administration. Most frequently perceived to participate were chairpersons and academic deans in academics; presidents. academic deans, deans of students, and business officers in student affairs; presidents and development officers in development; and presidents, academic deans, and business officers in administration. Based on position, there were significant differences about who makes the decision for 6 of the 19 items and about who participates for 15. The significant differences in who makes the decision were for adding a course, changing a grade, changing an admission policy, building a building, changing the purpose of the college, and changing the bylaws. Based on level of involvement, there were significant differences about who makes the decision for 3 of the 19 items. These were for adding a course, beginning a fund-raising project, and filling an administrative vacancy. It was concluded that there was considerable unanimity of opinion about who makes decisions, but little about who participates. The most frequent decision makers were those at the top of the hierarchy (trustees and presidents), and those who least frequently made the decisions were those at then lower levels (chairpersons and faculty). Book Shared Governance in Higher Education Volume 2

Download or read book Shared Governance in Higher Education Volume 2 written by Sharon F. Cramer and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shared Governance in Higher Education Set (Volumes 1, 2 and 3) Building on the resources offered in the first volume of this series, this second volume offers governance members, leaders, and other academics valuable insights into the governance process in higher education. In a chapter drawn from his keynote address at the March 2015 SUNY Voices conference, Steven Bahls, president of Augustana College, provides a critical study of institutions of higher education. Nine additional chapters offer a thorough analysis of academic processes that are usually hidden from view, including development of a sexual assault policy, faculty review of administrators, and successful use of task forces. Contributors describe subtle considerations and compromises, which effective governance leaders can incorporate into collaborations leading to effective outcomes. Readers of this volume will better understand how to avoid pitfalls of their own, as contributors illustrate hard-earned wisdom and lessons learned. Practical insights and guidelines on leadership development, budget development involving governance leaders, and mentoring are provided. This volume will provide readers— faculty, staff, students, and administrators—with the pragmatic resources they need to recognize and resolve governance challenges on their own campuses.

Book The Provost s Handbook

Download or read book The Provost s Handbook written by James Martin and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2015-04-15 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A go-to resource to help provosts, deans, presidents, and trustees effectively meet the challenges of leading a college or university. As the chief academic officer, the provost plays the central role in the contemporary university or college. He or she leads the faculty and serves as their key representative to the administration while simultaneously acting as the administration's spokesperson to the academic faculty. How has this essential leadership position evolved over the past few decades, and what are the best practices to adopt for succeeding in specific operational areas? In seventeen essays written by some of the most successful chief academic officers in the United States, The Provost's Handbook outlines key topics related to the changing environment of higher education while explaining what constitutes effective leadership at the college and university level. How, for example, does the provost lead in a time of disruption and shifting needs? What skills should he or she nurture in new faculty? What role should data and institutional research play in decision making? How can a provost navigate the often stormy situations of shared governance? These questions—and many more challenges presented by this role—are addressed in this essential volume. Assembled by James Martin and James E. Samels, accomplished authors and scholars of leadership in higher education, The Provost's Handbook is destined to become the go-to resource for deans, presidents, trustees, and chief academic officers everywhere.
