Book Fatigue of Beta Processed and Beta Heat treated Titanium Alloys

Download or read book Fatigue of Beta Processed and Beta Heat treated Titanium Alloys written by Russell Wanhill and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-28 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication reviews most of the available literature on the fatigue properties of β annealed Ti-6Al-4V and titanium alloys with similar microstructures. The focus is on β processed and β heat-treated alloys because β annealed Ti-6Al-4V has been selected for highly loaded and fatigue-critical structures, including the main wing-carry-through bulkheads and vertical tail stubs, of advanced high-performance military aircraft. An important aspect of the review is a concise survey of fatigue life assessment methods and the required types of fatigue data. This survey provides the background to recommendations for further research, especially on the fatigue behaviour of β annealed Ti-6Al-4V under realistic fatigue load histories, including the essential topic of short/small fatigue crack growth. Such research is required for independent fatigue life assessments that conform to the aircraft manufacturer’s design requirements, and also for life reassessments that most probably will have to be made during the service life of the aircraft.

Book Fretting Fatigue Behavior of a Titanium Alloy Ti 6AL 4V at Elevated Temperature

Download or read book Fretting Fatigue Behavior of a Titanium Alloy Ti 6AL 4V at Elevated Temperature written by Onder Sahan and published by . This book was released on 2002-03-01 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to investigate the fretting fatigue behavior of the titanium alloy Ti-6Al-4V at elevated temperature is investigated. Fretting and plain fatigue experiments are conducted at 260 . Crack initiation location and crack initiation orientation is measured and fretting and plain fatigue life data of the specimens from these tests are obtained. Fatigue parameters capable of predicting the number of cycles to specimen failure, the crack location and the crack orientation along the contact surface are analyzed. The parameters are calculated by using the computed stresses and strains obtained from the finite element analysis. The mechanisms responsible for the fretting fatigue crack initiation are determined. The effect of elevated temperature is examined by comparing room and elevated temperature fretting and plain fatigue data.

Book Fracture Fatigue Characteristics in Titanium Alloys

Download or read book Fracture Fatigue Characteristics in Titanium Alloys written by C. G. Rhodes and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of sub-transus solution treatment on room temperature fracture toughness of Ti-6Al-4V (6-4) and Ti-4.5Al-5Mo-1.5Cr (CORONA-5) has been studied as a function of elemental partitioning and volume fraction of alpha and beta phases. Scanning/transmission electron microscopy was used to analyze quantitatively the microstructural components of the two alloys. It was found that, for as-solution treated condition, fracture toughness of 6-4 increased as volume fraction of primary alpha, aluminum content of primary alpha, aluminum content of beta phase, or vanadium content of beta phase decreased. Similarly, for as-solution treated CORONA-5, increases in volume fraction of primary alpha, aluminum and molybdenum contents of primary alpha, or chromium content of beta phase led to a decrease in toughness. In the case of solution-treated and aged 6-4, the analysis indicated that toughness was improved by increasing the vanadium content of the beta phase, increasing the size of secondary alpha plates, reducing the aluminum content of primary alpha, or by reducing the volume fraction of retained beta. Aging CORONA-5 after solution treatment resulted in a very fine secondary alpha structure within transformed beta regions.

Book Investigation of Fretting Fatigue Mechanisms on 7075 T6 Aluminum Alloy and Ti 6Al 4V Titanium Alloy

Download or read book Investigation of Fretting Fatigue Mechanisms on 7075 T6 Aluminum Alloy and Ti 6Al 4V Titanium Alloy written by Saeed Adibnazari and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is generally believed that fretting accelerates crack nucleation. However, a method to precisely determine the end of a crack nucleation stage has not been developed. It is therefore currently difficult to determine the exact affect of fretting on the stages of fatigue. This research started by hypothsizing that fretting fatigue cracks nucleate after the damage threshold (the amount of fretting damage required to bring a reduction to fatigue life) has been reached. Similar to the fretting fatigue damage threshold concept, it was hypothesized that there exists a normal pressure threshold as well. As a consequence of verifying these hypotheses, many other valuable facts related to fretting fatigue damage production and growth, crack nucleation and propagation were discovered.

Download or read book Determination of Design Data for Heat Treated Titanium Alloy Sheet written by D. L. White and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanical and physical property data, necessary to fulfill the requirements of Phase II of the Department of Defense Titanium Alloy Sheet Rolling Program, were obtained for selected solution treated and aged titanium alloys in sheet form. Four alloys were investigated: BI20VCA, (Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al), Ti-6Al-4v, Ti-2.5Al-16V, and Ti-4Al-3Mo-1V. They were suppled by the producers in the heat treated condtion from fhree or more heats and three thicknesses of each alloy. Static mechanical property data for tension, compression, bearing, shear and crippling; creep and rupture data for tension, compression, bearing and shear; and axial-load fatigue data were obtained at room and elevated temperatures. Fastener and weld joint data from -320F to 80F and physical properties from -420F to 1200F were obtained. Volume 2b contains procedures and results for creep and fatigue tests.

The fourth section (Machining, two chapters) describes the recent results of high speed machining of Ti-6Al-4V alloy and the possibility of application of sustainable machining for titanium alloys.

Book Improvement of Fatigue Properties in Titanium Alloys

Download or read book Improvement of Fatigue Properties in Titanium Alloys written by Charles M. Gilmore and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fatigue crack initiation lives of annealed Ti-6Al-4V alloys were determined at low (+ or - 0.006 in/in) and high (+ or - 0.012 in/in) shear strain amplitudes. The initiation life was separated from the propagation life by determining when extensive axial elongation of the specimen occurred. At 0.006 and 0.012 strain amplitudes the a-b annealed (alpha beta A) and mill annealed (MA) specimens have similar lives to crack initiation followed by recrystallized anneal (RA) and beta annealed (beta A) specimens. Analysis of the beta A specimens showed that structure related fatigue fracture was occurring and this was not observed with the other anneals. 'Cyclic creep' tests were conducted on each anneal treatment and the RA material exhibited the best dimensional stability and the beta A material the worst. These results are in accordance with the expected phase stability of each alloy; the RA material should be the closest to an equilibrium microstructure; the Beta A material the farthest from an equilibrium microstructure. The greatest increase in fatigue lives occurred for specimens quenched from a solution temperature of 1650 F, which is about 100 F below the beta transus. Reduction of solution temperature to 1550 F, or increases to 1750 F and 1950 F resulted in lower lives than the 1650 F solution temperature. The fracture surface of the material quenched from 1950 F had brittle type fatigue striations, also the region of fast fracture had evidence of microstructure effects. (Author).
