Book A People s History of the United States

Download or read book A People s History of the United States written by Howard Zinn and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2003-02-04 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its original landmark publication in 1980, A People's History of the United States has been chronicling American history from the bottom up, throwing out the official version of history taught in schools -- with its emphasis on great men in high places -- to focus on the street, the home, and the, workplace. Known for its lively, clear prose as well as its scholarly research, A People's History is the only volume to tell America's story from the point of view of -- and in the words of -- America's women, factory workers, African-Americans, Native Americans, the working poor, and immigrant laborers. As historian Howard Zinn shows, many of our country's greatest battles -- the fights for a fair wage, an eight-hour workday, child-labor laws, health and safety standards, universal suffrage, women's rights, racial equality -- were carried out at the grassroots level, against bloody resistance. Covering Christopher Columbus's arrival through President Clinton's first term, A People's History of the United States, which was nominated for the American Book Award in 1981, features insightful analysis of the most important events in our history. Revised, updated, and featuring a new after, word by the author, this special twentieth anniversary edition continues Zinn's important contribution to a complete and balanced understanding of American history.

Book The Book of Truth and Facts

Download or read book The Book of Truth and Facts written by Fritz von Frantzius and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Truth and Facts: Facts Which Every American Should Know The purpose. Of this booklet is to enlighten the American people on conditions, not only in Germany, but also in the United States and England, and to acquaint them with German ideals, which are so grossly misunderstood in this country. There are many things which I left unsaid for some reason or other, but I venture to h0pe that this book will be read by all true Americans, and that they may glean from it valuable knowledge of facts. My main object in publishing this book is to warn the American people against the dangers menacing this country, and jeopardizing the existence of the United States of America as a free and independent country. My criticisms may sometimes appear severe, but I trust they will be accepted in the spirit in which they are offered. Few people have courage enough to come out in the open and tell the truth, as their positions in life do not permit them to do so. History shows that many men who came forward with the truth had to suffer martyrdom. I am ready to state my convictions frankly in the interest of the great cause, and to tell what others either would not say, or are debarred from saying. May this book pass from one American to another and thus contribute to strengthen the ideals of this country. Book America I AM Black Facts

Download or read book America I AM Black Facts written by Quintard Taylor and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2009-02-02 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time is the great equalizer. No person, race, culture, or nation stands beyond its reach or can alter its inevitable progress. Timelines, lists of events in chronological order as they happened, allow us to understand the historical past as the evolution of events and eras. In the case of African American history, which has often been subject to blatant and subtle distortion, a timeline can both set the record straight, and expand our knowledge in new and exciting ways. America I AM Black Facts, a companion volume to the four-year touring museum exhibition, America I AM: The African American Imprint created by Tavis Smiley, offers an introduction to the rich, complex, tragic, and triumphal history of the forty million people of African descent over five centuries in what is now the United States. This fascinating volume features six timelines that chronicle the indelible imprint African Americans have made on the life, history, and culture of the United States and the world.

Book Do Facts Matter

Download or read book Do Facts Matter written by Jennifer L. Hochschild and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2015-01-20 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A democracy falters when most of its citizens are uninformed or misinformed, when misinformation affects political decisions and actions, or when political actors foment misinformation—the state of affairs the United States faces today, as this timely book makes painfully clear. In Do Facts Matter? Jennifer L. Hochschild and Katherine Levine Einstein start with Thomas Jefferson’s ideal citizen, who knows and uses correct information to make policy or political choices. What, then, the authors ask, are the consequences if citizens are informed but do not act on their knowledge? More serious, what if they do act, but on incorrect information? Analyzing the use, nonuse, and misuse of facts in various cases—such as the call to impeach Bill Clinton, the response to global warming, Clarence Thomas’s appointment to the Supreme Court, the case for invading Iraq, beliefs about Barack Obama’s birthplace and religion, and the Affordable Care Act—Hochschild and Einstein argue persuasively that errors of commission (that is, acting on falsehoods) are even more troublesome than errors of omission. While citizens’ inability or unwillingness to use the facts they know in their political decision making may be frustrating, their acquisition and use of incorrect “knowledge” pose a far greater threat to a democratic political system. Do Facts Matter? looks beyond individual citizens to the role that political elites play in informing, misinforming, and encouraging or discouraging the use of accurate or mistaken information or beliefs. Hochschild and Einstein show that if a well-informed electorate remains a crucial component of a successful democracy, the deliberate concealment of political facts poses its greatest threat.

Book The History of the American People

Download or read book The History of the American People written by Charles A. Beard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the American People One great motive has dominated the content and arrangement of this volume: the preparation of children for citizenship through an understanding of the ideals, institutions, achievements, and problems of our country. No mere almanac of facts, dates, and names, no matter how exhaustive or how presented, can accomplish this purpose. It can be done only by teaching boys and girls to think of events and issues of the living present in the light of their historical past, by giving them above all a sense of historical continuity. We have sought to catch the deep-flowing and powerful currents of American life, to present them fairly and justly, to engage the interest of the students in them, and to show their significance to the issues of the present hour. Only in this way does history become living. Only in this way can pupils be shown why they should study history. Such a story of American life and labor and ideals, if rightly told, must challenge the admiration and faith of those who believe that democracy is not to perish from the earth but to flourish and triumph everywhere. In carrying out our ideal we have selected those striking features of American history which bear upon and help to explain our own age. We have conceived of the whole as a vital, moving story with certain very definite and fundamental acts and scenes. We have sought to give to the book that unity which comes from such a controlling purpose, and have subordinated to it all details and collateral matter.
