Book excerpt: The first and only comprehensive guide to modern record theory andits applications Although it is often thought of as a special topic in orderstatistics, records form a unique area, independent of the study ofsample extremes. Interest in records has increased steadily overthe years since Chandler formulated the theory of records in 1952.Numerous applications of them have been developed in such far-flungfields as meteorology, sports analysis, hydrology, and stock marketanalysis, to name just a few. And the literature on the subjectcurrently comprises papers and journal articles numbering in thehundreds. Which is why it is so nice to have this book devotedexclusively to this lively area of statistics. Written by an exceptionally well-qualified author team, Recordspresents a comprehensive treatment of record theory and itsapplications in a variety of disciplines. With the help of amultitude of fascinating examples, Professors Arnold, Balakrishnan, and Nagaraja help readers quickly master basic and advanced recordvalue concepts and procedures, from the classical record valuemodel to random and multivariate record models. The book follows arational textbook format, featuring witty and insightful chapterintroductions that help smooth transitions from one topic toanother and challenging chapter-end exercises, which expand on thematerial covered. An extensive bibliography and numerous referencesthroughout the text specify sources for further readings onrelevant topics. Records is a valuable professional resource forprobabilists and statisticians, in addition to appliedstatisticians, meteorologists, hydrologists, market analysts, andsports analysts. It also makes an excellent primary text forcourses in record theory and a supplement to order statisticscourses.

Book Statistics of Extremes and Records in Random Sequences

Download or read book Statistics of Extremes and Records in Random Sequences written by Satya N. Majumdar and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-16 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rare events such as earthquakes, tsunamis, floods etc do not fortunately occur every day, but when they do, their effects are devastating. These days, such rare events are particularly important to understand to characterize the global warming and climate changes. In addition to natural catastrophes, rare events such as big financial crashes also play a significant role in economy. In the absence of predictive models, the best way forward is to analyse the statistics of these extreme events and draw conclusions from it about the probability of their occurrences. Extreme value statistics (EVS) and the statistics of records in a random sequence are examples of a truly interdisciplinary topic, spanning from statistics and mathematics on one side to physics of disordered systems on the other. They have tremendous importance and practical applications in a wide variety of fields, such as climate science, finance, spin-glasses, and random matrices. Statistics and mathematical literature have explored the subject of the classical theory of EVS. However, more recently, EVS started to play a very important role in statistical physics, in particular in disordered systems. This has led to a plethora of activities, both in the statistical physics and in the mathematics communities over the last few decades. This book develops the theory of rare events, both for the classical uncorrelated as well as for correlated sequences, in terms of simple models and examples. Statistics of Extremes and Records in Random Sequences is a pedagogical book with examples illustrating the basic tools and techniques that are essential to a student starting to work in this interesting and rapidly developing field.

Book Bounds and Characterizations of Record Statistics

Download or read book Bounds and Characterizations of Record Statistics written by Mohammad Ahsanullah and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manuscript attempts to present in an organised manner characterisations and bounds of Record Values. There are several interesting articles presented in various journals and in some books on characterisations and bounds of Record Values. The aim is to provide a through presentation of these topics in this book. The book will be helpful to any one considering an independent study for characterisations and bounds of record values. The book presents the essential topics on the bounds for expectations of records and characterisations of probability distributions via record statistics.

Book Utah and the American Civil War

Download or read book Utah and the American Civil War written by Kenneth L. Alford and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 865 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Fort Sumter was attacked in April 1861, hundreds of soldiers were stationed at the U.S. Army’s Camp Floyd, forty miles southwest of Salt Lake City. The camp, established in June 1858, was the nation’s largest military post. Utah and the American Civil War presents a wealth of primary sources pertaining to the territory’s participation in the Civil War—material that until now has mostly been scattered, incomplete, or difficult to locate. Organized and annotated for easy use, this rich mix of military orders, dispatches, letters, circulars, battle and skirmish reports, telegraph messages, command lists, and other correspondence shows how Utah’s wartime experience was shaped by a peculiar blend of geography, religion, and politics. Editor Kenneth L. Alford opens the collection with a year-by-year summary of important events in Utah Territory during the war, with special attention paid to the army’s recall from Utah in 1861, the Lot Smith Utah Cavalry Company’s 107-day military service, the Union army’s return in 1862, and relations between the military and Mormons. Readers will find accounts of an 1861 attempt to court-martial a Virginia-born commander for treason, battle reports from the January 1863 Bear River Massacre, documents from the army’s high command authorizing Governor James Doty to enlist additional Utah troops in October 1864, and evidence of Colonel Patrick Edward Connor’s personal biases against Native Americans and Mormons. A glossary of nineteenth-century phrases, military terms, and abbreviations, along with a detailed timeline of key historical events, places the records in historical context. Collected and published together for the first time, these records document the unique role Utah played in the Civil War and reveal the war’s influence, both subtle and overt, on the emerging state of Utah.
