This book was released on 2016-04-25 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an era of promising advances in cancer research, there are considerable and even alarming gaps in the fundamental knowledge and understanding of ovarian cancer. Researchers now know that ovarian cancer is not a single disease-several distinct subtypes exist with different origins, risk factors, genetic mutations, biological behaviors, and prognoses. However, persistent questions have impeded progress toward improving the prevention, early detection, treatment, and management of ovarian cancers. Failure to significantly improve morbidity and mortality during the past several decades is likely due to several factors, including the lack of research being performed by specific disease subtype, lack of definitive knowledge of the cell of origin and disease progression, and incomplete understanding of genetic and non-genetic risk factors. Ovarian Cancers examines the state of the science in ovarian cancer research, identifies key gaps in the evidence base and the challenges to addressing those gaps, considers opportunities for advancing ovarian cancer research, and examines avenues for translation and dissemination of new findings and communication of new information to patients and others. This study makes recommendations for public- and private-sector efforts that could facilitate progress in reducing the incidence of morbidity and mortality from ovarian cancers.

Book Memoir of a Debulked Woman Enduring Ovarian Cancer

This book was released on 2012-04-30 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 2012 New York Times Book Review Notable Book "Staggering, searing…Ms. Gubar deserves the highest admiration for her bravery and honesty." —New York Times Diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2008, Susan Gubar underwent radical debulking surgery, an attempt to excise the cancer by removing part or all of many organs in the lower abdomen. Her memoir mines the deepest levels of anguish and devotion as she struggles to come to terms with her body’s betrayal and the frightful protocols of contemporary medicine. She finds solace in the abiding love of her husband, children, and friends while she searches for understanding in works of literature, visual art, and the testimonies of others who suffer with various forms of cancer. Ovarian cancer remains an incurable disease for most of those diagnosed, even those lucky enough to find caring and skilled physicians. Memoir of a Debulked Woman is both a polemic against the ineffectual and injurious medical responses to which thousands of women are subjected and a meditation on the gifts of companionship, art, and literature that sustain people in need.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ovarian cancer is a tumor that develops in the ovaries, the female reproductive organs responsible for creating eggs and hormones. It is the fifth most prevalent malignancy in women and is generally identified at an advanced stage owing to the lack of particular early signs. Ovarian cancer may produce different symptoms, including bloating, pelvic discomfort, changes in bowel habits, and feeling full rapidly. Risk factors for ovarian cancer include family history, inherited gene mutations (BRCA1/BRCA2), rising age, and specific hormonal variables. Diagnosis requires a mix of physical examination, medical history review, imaging tests (such as ultrasound or CT scans), blood tests (such as CA-125), and tissue biopsy. Treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, targeted treatments, and immunotherapy, depending on the stage and features of the malignancy. Regular follow-up treatment is needed since ovarian cancer might return. Genetic testing and counseling may be indicated for those with a family history of ovarian or breast cancer. Supportive treatment and patient education play significant roles in addressing the physical and emotional issues associated with ovarian cancer. Early identification, knowledge of symptoms, and prompt medical action are critical for improving outcomes and survival rates.
